The National Parks: America’s Best Idea: Ken Burns’ 12-hour, six-part documentary series premieres (1, 8 and 10 p.m. KCET).

60 Minutes: The venerable newsmagazine series returns for a new season (7 p.m. CBS).

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition: Ty and the team rebuild the family home of a highly decorated Wisconsin firefighter. Patricia Heaton and Five for Fighting pitch in on the season premiere (7 p.m. ABC).

The Amazing Race 15: The 15th installment of the unscripted competition series opens with a two-hour episode that has one of the 12 teams eliminated even before leaving the starting line. The remaining teams will race through eight countries in just 21 days (8 p.m. CBS).

The Simpsons: The animated sitcom turns 20, with Comic Book Guy (Hank Azaria) casting Homer (Dan Castellaneta) as the lead in a comic-book-themed feature film. With Seth Rogen (8 p.m. Fox).

The Cleveland Show: Mike Henry reprises his voice role as Cleveland Brown in this new animated ‘Family Guy’ spinoff. Arianna Huffington supplies a guest voice in the premiere (8:30 p.m. Fox).

Desperate Housewives: As Season 6 opens, the identity of Mike Delfino’s (James Denton) bride is revealed. Lynette (Felicity Huffman) faces another pregnancy and Bree (Marcia Cross) tries to break free from her inhibitions -- and Orson (Kyle MacLachlan) (9 p.m. ABC).

Family Guy: Brian and Stewie (both voiced by Seth MacFarlane) travel through alternate universes, including a post-apocalyptic world and one run by dogs where humans are pets, in the season premiere (9 p.m. Fox).

Dexter: Dexter (Michael C. Hall), sleep-deprived by his new infant, begins to make mistakes on the job. Jennifer Carpenter, Keith Carradine and new series regular John Lithgow also star in the season premiere (9 p.m. Showtime).

Californication: As Season 3 opens with Karen (Natascha McElhone) in New York, Hank (David Duchovny) has his hands full playing single father to the increasingly rebellious Becca (Madeline Martin) (10 p.m. Showtime).

Brothers & Sisters: A third season for the dysfunctional Walker clan opens with Kitty (Calista Flockhart) harboring a secret that will shock the family. Sally Field, Patricia Wettig, Emily VanCamp, Dave Annable and Rachel Griffiths also star (10 p.m. ABC).

The Wizard of Oz: A tornado whisks a Kansas farm girl to a magic land in the 1939 classic (8 p.m. TBS).
