UPDATED: Glenn Beck goes after Color of Change co-founder Van Jones

Glenn Beck used his popular Fox News show this afternoon to attack the background of Van Jones, a White House environmental advisor who co-founded an African American political advocacy group that organized an advertising boycott of his program.

During his 2 p.m. PDT show, Beck did not address the boycott spearheaded by Color of Change to protest the talk show host’s remark last month that he believes President Obama is “a racist.”

Instead, he spent a large share of his program suggesting that Jones, who co-founded Color of Change in 2005, is a radical. Jones now serves as a special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

During a six-minute biographical profile, set to ominous music, Beck said Jones was twice arrested for political protests and has described himself as a "rowdy black nationalist." The talk show host cast the piece as part of a broader examination of Obama's "czars," special advisers to the president who "don't answer to anybody."

"Why is it that such a committed revolutionary has made it so high into the Obama administration as one of his chief advisers?" Beck asked.

Christine Glunz, a spokeswoman for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, noted that Jones has been lauded as an environmental hero and said his entire focus is on “building clean energy incentives which create 21st-century jobs.”

“Glenn Beck is trying to change the subject,” said James Rucker, executive director of Color of Change, who noted that Jones has not been active with the group in almost two years. “The issue is his baseless fear mongering.”

Beck has gone after Jones in the past. On July 28, he called the activist a "self-professed communist" and questioned the role he was playing in the administration. His latest assault on Jones came as Color of Change announced that it has secured commitments from 36 companies who have pledged not to advertise on Beck’s popular program, including Wal-Mart and Sprint. However, some of the companies never had a presence on "Glenn Beck." Representatives of Procter & Gamble and AT&T – listed by Color of Change as companies that had signed onto the boycott – told The Times that their companies did not run spots on Beck’s program to begin with.

While the advertising boycott has generated substantial media coverage, Fox News said it has not impacted the network’s revenues or Beck’s audience. "The advertisers referenced have all moved their spots from Beck to other programs on the network so there has been no revenue lost," a spokeswoman said.

Since his Fox News show launched in January, Beck has attracted a sizable audience with his strident denunciations of the Obama administration and apocalyptic warnings about the country’s direction. Late last month, during an appearance on the morning show “Fox & Friends,” he accused Obama of having “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.”

“This guy is, I believe, a racist,” he added.

The flap that ensued did not appear to dampen Beck’s viewership. This month, his show has averaged 2.25 million viewers, 99% more than tuned in during the same period last year, when the network aired “America’s Election HQ” during the time period. And his ratings are up from July, when Beck's program averaged 2.05 million viewers. Fan websites such as Defend Glenn have called for viewers to fight back against the advertising boycott, and some media veterans have denounced the tactic as a suppression of free speech.

The controversy has triggered a broader discussion about the risks to advertisers of running commercials amid the incendiary rhetoric of cable talk shows. Clorox announced last week that it was pulling its ads off all political talk shows.

"We do not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show host,” the company said in a statement. “After a comprehensive review of political talks shows across the spectrum, at this time we have made a decision not to advertise on them. Clorox has done very little advertising on political talk shows overall, and given the sometimes inflammatory nature of these shows, we feel our advertising investment is best directed elsewhere.”

As boycott continues, Glenn Beck's audience swells

I'll be asking everyone I know to pull their patronage from organizations which decided to pull the advertizing dollars from Glen Beck's show. Glen is one of the few talk show hosts fighting for their survival - and this is how they repay him?! Glen - keep screaming, more and more people are listening.

Go !! Glenn
I will not buy those products anymore...

It's time we call it good and divide camps. Reading these comments makes it clear there can be no compromise in policy to please both sides. You guys go craft your utopia. God help you paying for it. The rest of us just want to go to work, take care of our families, mow our lawns, and not be told, nor tell others how to live or what to do with their money. It has been a good 200+ year run, but it's just ugly now. I see no one on the left offering any counterpoints to the questions Beck raises. They just want to hate him. They are valid questions about huge changes to our country that only a small minority is in favor of. Sorry, but it's true. If it keeps going this direction. I see a civil war or a revolution.

Thank God for Glenn Beck who has the courage to tell Americans the truth about what is going on with this Administration...Obama now has over 35 Czars, many of which have radical political views, including Jones. Pat Caddell was also on the show, and he is a Democrat. He has worked for Democratic presidential candidates George McGovern in 1972, Jimmy Carter in 1976 and 1980, Gary Hart in 1984, Joe Biden in 1988, and Jerry Brown in 1992, and HE is concerned about Obama's agenda.

Obama's outrageous spending is bankrupting our country.

Glen Beck is an American Hero.

I'm not surpised that the riot at which Jones was arrested is now being referred to as a political protest. Perhaps the atrocities in Oklahoma City and at the former World Trade Centershould be relabel 'political protests'.

I have personally known Van, his wife, and two beautiful children for 4 years. What "scares" Beck so much about him and green jobs? Its rediculous. He says it would be great people to be trained in green technical jobs like solar pannel construction so they can get real jobs when they get out of prison. Where is the controversy? Heaven forbid that Obama also has an intrest in creating economic opportunities in lower income communities as well as not trashing the planet. Very intelligent, positive and inovative thinker all around. Do your research. He has a body of work.

It is not enough to go after Beck.

We should make the producers who make exhorbinate amounts of money from spewing right wing misinformation and hatred suffer publically...make their names and faces known...when they promote and support racist, hateful, militaristic, knuckle dragging jack boot thugs like Glenn Beck.

Beck will go away and another will take his place...until we make the people who prop these lying sacks of crap up pay a very public price - instead of sitting up in their cozy corner offices raking in the cash, and never feeling the humiliation of being caught red handed lying.

Kimberly spewed some nonsense that she gets from her OXYRUSH IV feed.

If there was a liberal media then Bush would have never been elected.
If there was a liberal in the WH then you would know it.
Get it?
You conservative wackjobs should really quit homeschooling your children. It is dropping conservative IQ's dangerously low.
What was Jesus's pet dinosaurs name? LOL

The real headline should be that the mainstream media has deliberatly neglected to ask the questions Beck is asking and it also spends all its time making the questioner the issue.

It is past time to reconsider the first amendment protections against the politically negligent media who fail in their responsibility to inform the citizenry and have become complicit in disinforming them of the dangers to their freedoms.

Enjoy your beloved socialism when they come for you.

Van Jones is a patriotic American hero. Young people all around the country, of many backgrounds, have been inspired by him to lead a life of purpose on behalf of others, in the name of forging a more perfect union. As for Glen Beck, one can only repeat Joseph Welch's words in the climactic McCarthy hearing "Have you no sense of decency?" It is only with dignity and a sense of deep moral obligation that we will create a better future: here's to Van Jones for embodying these ideals.

Glenn Beck is a pathetic little weasel, projecting his racism on others. He'd probably suggest that Rosa Parks was a radical nationalist. He's pissed at these people because they launched a successful boycott of his show. Poor loser.

The latest left attack of the truth that is void of CBS, ABC, NBC forgets about the core valuse of the people asociated with Obama. I like Obama personally, but his agenda is based on National Socialism, goverment control and he, "Obama" is a community organizer with ties to anti-American types such as Rev, Wright, Acorn, his own political action group, and other entities that have a socialistist agenda that is , will bankrupt this country for the benefit of the minority who has believed that wealth transformation is the fair play to get ahead instead of a positive work ethic, family values, and education that isn't manipulated by liberal slant if and only if they persue an education. Americans now see this "change" as a transformation of the values set forth by equality and hard work, The government for 40 years has used the Comercial code to destroy the fabric of business, lend power to lawyers who destroy individuals that lawyers seem to have ethics but no morals and dominate our government.
It's time to VOTE all of them out, reshape the destruction piece by piece, lower txes, eliminate punitive obstacles for businesses and stopfund these fringe left radicals that dominate our national interst that inhibit, drilling, farming, production, and the farse of global warming. AThese Washington elites need to be sent home for good. Twenty to forty years as politicians suggests that their own personal well being is more important than standing up for the American people and the constitution. This is a Republic. Not get politicians rich!!!

Standing up for your rights and demanding to be treated with respect and equality does not make minorities racist. If you cannot tell the difference between that kind of behavior and the kind Glenn Beck exhibits then that's a very sad testament. Glenn Beck is a hate filled man. Anyone who listens to his show and agrees with what he says is either 1) ignorant, 2) feels marginalized as a white person or 3) both. White people are unhappy that the playing fields get more level every day. They are not happy that white people seem to be losing their dominance. They don't see it as everyone becoming equal because they don't believe that any other race IS equal to them. They think white people should remain at the top of the heap and everyone else should be kept down where they belong. Whether you want to admit it or not, it's true. That's why so many of these things that are said are so easy to believe. The President is not a racist. Van Jones is not a racist. Glenn Beck behaves like a racist. I don't know if what he says on his show is truly what he believes or if he's just saying it for ratings. Either way it's ugly. If nothing else, he sounds like he's need of a mental evaluation. I'm not joking about that, either.

It's not basic fear mongering to ask questions, especially when something smells fishy. Political discourse and social dialogue are only "inflammatory speech" in the eye of the beholder. I'm sick of this political correct BS! The willing zombies, the useful idiots, all for curtailing free speech by labeling as many words as possible as hate speech. Eric the Red says we're cowards because we don't talk about race, yet if anyone does they're labeled racist. Great job keeping us all divided, rainbow push. Get ready for free speech store to be shut down.

Glenn Beck has a right to say what he thinks. If he were a liberal, no one would bat an eyelash if he called someone a racist. What's the deal, everyone???

You go Glenn ! There are a lot of me's out here.

It is amusung...to see how liberals think. Reading some of these posts make me wonder, to repeat one of your favorite leftist's Barney Frank, "What planet are you from?" Definitely something in your drinking water that keeps you from engaging in rational thought. Of course this is the LA Times. Liberals are hypocrits. When conservatives are in power every action is scrutinized. When liberals are in power, everything is given a pass and nobody questions anything. Turn brain off. See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil.

"The white man dragged the black man away from his home land to sell him as personal property to other white men."

-Actually, those black men were sold to the American white man by other black men. see, black on black crime has roots all the way to the mother land.

"Van Jones cannot be called a racist for standing up for his beliefs during a time when African Americans were attacked by police dogs and fire hosed for attempting to eat at the same counter top as their white American counter parts."

- you're not really this dumb are you? Van Jones was arrested during the riot following the Rodney King verdict in 1992. NOT during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's.

anyone CAN be a racist. if you think that your race is superior to another, that's racism. to think that only whites can be racists is foolish.

NKM: Are YOU really that clueless? Do you really believe it was the white man who dragged the black man off their land to turn them into slaves? Go read your history again. Before you make yourself appear even more ignorant than I already think you are.

On a second note, if you think blacks aren't racists, you are out of your mind. I get more racism being in a predominatly black area then a black person would get in a white area. true fact. While I won't disagree that there are plenty of white racist around, the public opinion (more like the black opinion) is that white's can't be racist, but blacks can. Personally that doesn't slide with me. I wasn't around back in those days, nor were you. So let's dispose of this attitude and anger towards something you nor I were even present for.

or wait... you can't do that because then you lose all of yoru "entitlements".

One small problem, Mr. Beck.

When Color of Change comes after you, you lose sponsors.

When you go after Color of Change, they gain donations.

I'll be doing that after I post this.

In America, we have freedom of government intrusion on speech. But we don't have freedom from the consequences of that speech.

Cop killer Richard Poplawski murdered three Pittsburgh police officers because you said Obama was coming after his guns, Mr. Beck. I hope that their families sue you into abject poverty.
