UPDATED: Glenn Beck goes after Color of Change co-founder Van Jones

Glenn Beck used his popular Fox News show this afternoon to attack the background of Van Jones, a White House environmental advisor who co-founded an African American political advocacy group that organized an advertising boycott of his program.

During his 2 p.m. PDT show, Beck did not address the boycott spearheaded by Color of Change to protest the talk show host’s remark last month that he believes President Obama is “a racist.”

Instead, he spent a large share of his program suggesting that Jones, who co-founded Color of Change in 2005, is a radical. Jones now serves as a special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

During a six-minute biographical profile, set to ominous music, Beck said Jones was twice arrested for political protests and has described himself as a "rowdy black nationalist." The talk show host cast the piece as part of a broader examination of Obama's "czars," special advisers to the president who "don't answer to anybody."

"Why is it that such a committed revolutionary has made it so high into the Obama administration as one of his chief advisers?" Beck asked.

Christine Glunz, a spokeswoman for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, noted that Jones has been lauded as an environmental hero and said his entire focus is on “building clean energy incentives which create 21st-century jobs.”

“Glenn Beck is trying to change the subject,” said James Rucker, executive director of Color of Change, who noted that Jones has not been active with the group in almost two years. “The issue is his baseless fear mongering.”

Beck has gone after Jones in the past. On July 28, he called the activist a "self-professed communist" and questioned the role he was playing in the administration. His latest assault on Jones came as Color of Change announced that it has secured commitments from 36 companies who have pledged not to advertise on Beck’s popular program, including Wal-Mart and Sprint. However, some of the companies never had a presence on "Glenn Beck." Representatives of Procter & Gamble and AT&T – listed by Color of Change as companies that had signed onto the boycott – told The Times that their companies did not run spots on Beck’s program to begin with.

While the advertising boycott has generated substantial media coverage, Fox News said it has not impacted the network’s revenues or Beck’s audience. "The advertisers referenced have all moved their spots from Beck to other programs on the network so there has been no revenue lost," a spokeswoman said.

Since his Fox News show launched in January, Beck has attracted a sizable audience with his strident denunciations of the Obama administration and apocalyptic warnings about the country’s direction. Late last month, during an appearance on the morning show “Fox & Friends,” he accused Obama of having “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.”

“This guy is, I believe, a racist,” he added.

The flap that ensued did not appear to dampen Beck’s viewership. This month, his show has averaged 2.25 million viewers, 99% more than tuned in during the same period last year, when the network aired “America’s Election HQ” during the time period. And his ratings are up from July, when Beck's program averaged 2.05 million viewers. Fan websites such as Defend Glenn have called for viewers to fight back against the advertising boycott, and some media veterans have denounced the tactic as a suppression of free speech.

The controversy has triggered a broader discussion about the risks to advertisers of running commercials amid the incendiary rhetoric of cable talk shows. Clorox announced last week that it was pulling its ads off all political talk shows.

"We do not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show host,” the company said in a statement. “After a comprehensive review of political talks shows across the spectrum, at this time we have made a decision not to advertise on them. Clorox has done very little advertising on political talk shows overall, and given the sometimes inflammatory nature of these shows, we feel our advertising investment is best directed elsewhere.”

As boycott continues, Glenn Beck's audience swells

wow, 2 million viewers, almost half as much as a family guy repeat. The color of change campaign got way more traction than the actual Beck show. Which is why beck is going after this, to latch onto something so he can get ratings. He is a comedian with no journalism or political experience. Perfect for Faux News.

Obama cover is being blown and the liberal media doesn't like it (LA Times). 4 years will be 4 years to many of Obama.

Soooooo...... what's your point?

You didn't delve into Jones background to dispell anything Beck said. You just ranted on and on and on. None of the comments seem to address anything he say's accept to denounce him for going where white people fear to go every day of our lives.

I am thankful for Glenn Beck. He is a patriot and a teacher. This country needs someone like him, who has the courage to expose the problems of our government.

This most recent rant is symptomatic of a larger issue. The problem that Glenn Beck and his ilk present for conservatism is that he and they fume and name call rather than espouse authentic conservative principles in a principled manner. They shed more heat than light and thus hurt rather than help their cause.

Down with Glenn Beck...get him out of here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glen Go Go Goooo....away

Dear Thomas Madigan: Perhaps it's because Blacks never tore Whites from their homeland and families, never enslaved Whites under deplorable and sadist conditions, never denied Whites basic human rights, never committed treason against their flag in an attempt to maintain the slavery status quo, and have never continued their discriminatory practices under Jim Crow and other practices for decades. Do you think?

Oh Please! The Glenn Beck show is one of the most informative programs on Television . . . thus the boycott. Simple as that. Some people can't handle the truth.

Glenn did a very good job tonight asking the questions that the MSM fails to ask and that the Yes We Can crowd refuses to believe. What is Van Jones doing in the White House anyways? Any idiot can go around spouting statistics and champion the need for more "green jobs"......just look at Al Gore. Keep opening our eyes Glenn. Can't wait to see what your ratings will be later this week. I'm predicting the 3 million plus range. Possibly higher than O'Reilly's.

Glenn Beck has a lot to say. I agree with him whole heartedly. I too would like to know who is writing all those bills in Washington. One of Obama's speech writers or does he have a Bill Czar? Obama will destroy America if we do not put a stop to this spending and some other things he is trying to do.

Why is that when Republicans run up massive deficits it is called supply side economics at its finest but when Democrats run up massive deficits it is called Socialism?

Beck is just trying hard to be Limbaugh Jr. Why anyone pays attention to him is beyond me. When I used to see him on CNN I wondered what the heck he was doing there when his style of hysterical right wing bloviating belongs on Fox. Voila! Now he's where he belongs.

And for all the wingnuts out there who think Obama is a Marxist/Socialist/ Communist I have news for you. A real radical of that stripe would not be playing nice and reaching out to the opposition for bipartisan solutions like Obama is. If you don't think so turn off Fox News and read a bit of history about Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Castro.

The window of "opportunity" is closing on obama's programs. He knows this and this is why there was such a huge push, out of the gate, to make all of these systemic 'changes' to our culture. Soon...very soon....the media is going to turn on this guy and it will not be pretty.

The first time I heard Glenn Beck, he was using the voice of Scooby Doo to recite the Constitution followed by a lovely operatic version of Psalms 7-12, and I've been hooked ever since.
Cmon folks, he makes crazy conservatives look good!

The answer to Gagan's question is yes, (Is there any proof that Obama is racist) The fact that that Obama said the "Police acted stupidly" is proof. The only facts of the arrest that Obama knew at that time: Black man and White cop...only a Racist would jump to that conclusion with only that info.

Wow, there are some really messed up people listening to Limbaugh, Beck and Fox News. I know because I work them! The ONLY stations they watch and listen to are Fox and any station that air that crappy one-sided bull. The sad part is that these people ACTUALLY BELIEVE everything these idiots say...seriously. Evidently it is easier for these people to listen to brainwashing in the name of Christian morals and values...please. The Bush admin will go down as the most corrupt regime in US history!! All in the name GOD'S WORK...evidently these right wingers have no qualms about letting Bush/Cheney rewrite the constitution and take all human rights away in the name of WAR ON EVIL.

Perhaps that strange cloud appearing over the White House drove the Obama family to take a vacation - far, far away.
Do you hear the rumble of discontent?
I do.
Because Americans are awakening to the fact that the commander in chief may be a marauder and thief, seeking to steal a nation's fortune, to distribute to his supporters, cronies, and sycophants.

Let us pray that "Chicago" doesn't take root in Foggy Bottom.

Beck tells it like it is. Maybe more Americans will wake up before it is too late and realize what is really happening to our country. It is time to boycott those business that try to quelch the truth. The 912 Tea Party is a great idea! Wake up America!

Glenn's preoccupation with Van Jones' younger days is so classical McCarthy. Yea Glenn, call him a communist! This guy is a Joseph Goebbels wannabe if there ever was one...soon Mr. Beck will be calling for Kristallnacht and leading us all in book burnings...he already is obsessed with "the big lie" (say it over and over and people will believe). Geez can't these political talk show crazies just grow up! All the Clorox in the world won't clean up this mess Mr. Beck...your desire to whip up fear and hatred has engulfed you sir.
