UPDATED: Glenn Beck goes after Color of Change co-founder Van Jones

Glenn Beck used his popular Fox News show this afternoon to attack the background of Van Jones, a White House environmental advisor who co-founded an African American political advocacy group that organized an advertising boycott of his program.

During his 2 p.m. PDT show, Beck did not address the boycott spearheaded by Color of Change to protest the talk show host’s remark last month that he believes President Obama is “a racist.”

Instead, he spent a large share of his program suggesting that Jones, who co-founded Color of Change in 2005, is a radical. Jones now serves as a special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

During a six-minute biographical profile, set to ominous music, Beck said Jones was twice arrested for political protests and has described himself as a "rowdy black nationalist." The talk show host cast the piece as part of a broader examination of Obama's "czars," special advisers to the president who "don't answer to anybody."

"Why is it that such a committed revolutionary has made it so high into the Obama administration as one of his chief advisers?" Beck asked.

Christine Glunz, a spokeswoman for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, noted that Jones has been lauded as an environmental hero and said his entire focus is on “building clean energy incentives which create 21st-century jobs.”

“Glenn Beck is trying to change the subject,” said James Rucker, executive director of Color of Change, who noted that Jones has not been active with the group in almost two years. “The issue is his baseless fear mongering.”

Beck has gone after Jones in the past. On July 28, he called the activist a "self-professed communist" and questioned the role he was playing in the administration. His latest assault on Jones came as Color of Change announced that it has secured commitments from 36 companies who have pledged not to advertise on Beck’s popular program, including Wal-Mart and Sprint. However, some of the companies never had a presence on "Glenn Beck." Representatives of Procter & Gamble and AT&T – listed by Color of Change as companies that had signed onto the boycott – told The Times that their companies did not run spots on Beck’s program to begin with.

While the advertising boycott has generated substantial media coverage, Fox News said it has not impacted the network’s revenues or Beck’s audience. "The advertisers referenced have all moved their spots from Beck to other programs on the network so there has been no revenue lost," a spokeswoman said.

Since his Fox News show launched in January, Beck has attracted a sizable audience with his strident denunciations of the Obama administration and apocalyptic warnings about the country’s direction. Late last month, during an appearance on the morning show “Fox & Friends,” he accused Obama of having “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.”

“This guy is, I believe, a racist,” he added.

The flap that ensued did not appear to dampen Beck’s viewership. This month, his show has averaged 2.25 million viewers, 99% more than tuned in during the same period last year, when the network aired “America’s Election HQ” during the time period. And his ratings are up from July, when Beck's program averaged 2.05 million viewers. Fan websites such as Defend Glenn have called for viewers to fight back against the advertising boycott, and some media veterans have denounced the tactic as a suppression of free speech.

The controversy has triggered a broader discussion about the risks to advertisers of running commercials amid the incendiary rhetoric of cable talk shows. Clorox announced last week that it was pulling its ads off all political talk shows.

"We do not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show host,” the company said in a statement. “After a comprehensive review of political talks shows across the spectrum, at this time we have made a decision not to advertise on them. Clorox has done very little advertising on political talk shows overall, and given the sometimes inflammatory nature of these shows, we feel our advertising investment is best directed elsewhere.”

This article is very biased. The writer gets the Obama administration side of the story, and no other. Typical LA times propaganda.

This is all about "redistribution" - give the have nots the money (ie HALF a TRILLION to community organizers) - OUR money. Right now the fed gov't gets a little over ONE to 1.5 trillion yearly from taxes. Um, let me check my pocket change. We can't afford this irresponsible administration. (For those who blame BUSH, yes, he spent irresponsibly too.) Now, we have a felon, communist (the facts, only the facts) advising the President. This is robbery and ultimately, the total bankruptcy of our country.

These people called Bush "Hitler" all the time! They still compare conservatives to "Nazis" and called Glenn Beck a "facist."

I notice how all comments that are opposed to mr.beck's views refer to him as a racist, fear monger, etc. Notice how no one is actually disputing the "facts" that mr.beck is pointing out about the "czars". I challenge anyone to do their homework and prove him wrong. Its easy to call names, but its not easy to dispute the facts.

It doesn't matter who says it, the question is

Is Van Jones a Communist? Did Barack Obama know he was a communist when he appointed him as a Czar... er I mean Special Adviser?
What is the President going to do now that he knows one of his advisers or Czars is a communist? Will he let him stay on advising him?

Thank you Glenn for being a Patriot! It is obvious a certain minority group will never take responsibilty for their own lives. How is it that that refuges from Vietnam are enjoying success in the US and yet blacks in this country conitnue to blame whites for their inability to prosper?

How can a man raised by his white mother, white grandmother and white grandfather be a racist? Because he is not rolling over and doing the will of the same conservative jerks who ruined this country? That makes him a hero, not a racists. I'd sure like to know how a man with a beloved white mother can hate white people, but cry when his beloved white grandmother dies. Also, what the hell is "white culture"? Croissants and latte? In the United States, there is no "white culture" including skinheads and supremacists. Culture-wise, most people in the US are actually united and the only ones who are not, are newly arrived foreigners and they are trying their damnedest to fit in, one way or another.

NKM..are you smokin crack or just don't live in this country? THe racism is more blacks hating whites..and if you cared to truly and honestly look at the History of the Africans being brought here, the slave traders in Africa, that SOLD their African brothers andd sisters, were, themselves BLACK! There are FAR more black children raised to hate white people in this country..as well as to hate any and all policeman. THe more those like yourself continue to profess victimization and putting color above freedom and truth, living a life of entitlement, we are all doomed.

Does the left honestly think we will turn away from Glen Beck or Fox News?
What is being done to Glen Beck is the same thing the left tried to do to Sarah Palin. We The People are awakening and will not be silenced! So many are determined more then ever now to spread the word. Van Jones has only helped Fox News draw a larger croud by attacking Glen Beck . People are going viral now in support.

I've watched Beck's show a couple times just to see what all the excitement was about. After a few minutes, I see why people are pressuring his advertisers to pull their support. I promptly wrote to HoverRound to ask them to do the same. First, this guy is not very bright. Second, he seems to be crazy and unethical to be doing Murdock's bidding with seemingly no conscience. My prediction is that Beck will ultimately be left in the dust. After that I'm relatively sure that he'll put a bullet in his own head. BTW, I just received an insurance statement. It was for around 800 bucks. My primary deductible has already been paid, but the procedure carried another deductable. So the bill was 800 bucks and they sent me a check for 47 bucks. Yeah, the current system doesn't ration care and works just great.

Hey he used to be radical 2 years ago he doesn't share those views anymore...... Come on guys!!! Somehow acknowledging his past is hate mongering??? Name calling in this instance is just a smoke screen. Since when can we not hold a man accountable for his past??? While we are bickering about which side is right and fighting amongst each other adn taking sides, we will be infiltrated by guys like this. He has communist veiws and that pretty much sums it up for me, he does not need to be there!!!

I'm directing this to you because I don't know what you believe about Conservatives or Glen's viewers, but you almost sound like you are bashing on our views. It feels like you are bashing Glen for speaking out and calling him a fear monger and getting all of us in a frenzy. Your insight may be true about the frenzy lol. I judge that liberal columnist, like I believe you to be, look down upon conservatives and our point of view like we are just some mindless mob following around some talking head (ie Glen Beck)or religious views without considering the facts. If my assessment is true, than you are mistaken. There needs to be some serious dialouge between conservatives and liberals we are after all apart of this great country, and we are dividing more and more each day. Do us a favor and shed the bias point of view and look at all the angles, and dont defend this cat because of race or because Obama choose him, look beyond that and look at his actions and the words that are tied to it. What ever happened to good ol unbiased news and holding people accountable.

Let me preference this by saying I am Black

I believe that Gleen Beck like most people, have the good interest of the American people at heart. For someone who watches the show, he puts facts forward and defends his claims. Van Jones, like many of his political advisors, has a radical history and now is advising the president. Beck is only doing something that no liberal media would ever do, because it would hurt their allegiance with the president (L.A. Times?). But he is not saying this in a way like Limbaugh or Malkin or Ingram or Hannity which is directed at the democrats as a whole (taking cheap shot from the rubble that is the republican party). Instead he is deeper than that, looking at the men behind the Obama mirror of smiles and good grace.

Is Obama racist? Jerimiah Wright was, and usually a man, of any color, is not seen breaking into someone's house. This article was not writen objectivly and I think that in is the jealosy of Back and the lack of reason from a liberal mind.

Lets go glenn, you are the best, this is why the LA Times will need a bailout.

I understand thatyou have a deep seatted hatred of all things "Liberal" , and you havea strong dis like for the presedent. Butout of resepct for the dead, couldnt you at least with hold the hatred just for a few days? One day you too will be gone and there will be those among the crowd that will beharbouring dark thoughts, I just hope , for the sake of your peacfull passing, and that of your surviors,.. there will be some holding back untill you are at least at rest. Have a heart.. its ok to diss-agree... that what America is all about. Those of us who will diss-agree with you are just as American as you. We love America just as much. We just dont see things as you do and expressing that should be celibrated not denigrated. I dont know you but I wish you peace and healing of the hatred that sours your heart. God bless you, you Are my brother.

If Beck's statements were untrue, why is not the White House and Jones making statement to that effect. I believe Beck before I would believe Obama or Jones. They are "two peas in a Communist/Socialist pod"

I will request my Congressmen and Senators to look into the graft and corruption that is infecting our nation.

We need a peaceful revolution and it is coming over the next 4 years!

Beck is 100% right and he inspires all Americans regardless of color, or party affiliation to stand up and fight against the radicals that threaten our Constitution and Republic.

Van Jones is a admitted communist. Obama is an admitted racist. They believe in Black Nationalism as does Obama mentor Rev Wright. Obama spent his entire life surrounded with anti-American gutless bastards and continues to employ the likes of such (Van Jones)

We will prevail. Americans are getting organized to fight against those who threaten our way of life.

The Dem's are in complete denial. They are like sheep following the farmer to the slaughter house.

Beck is a good decent American and those like Jones and Obama hate it when he enlightens the public about their un-American motives.

GO Beck millions are with you!

FYI: I irony is, you talk about Conservatives and Republican's being so crazy, such idiots, such haters to the 1st degree, but look at yourself. Using words such as those to describe them, then spinning it around and accusing others. Go practice Free Speech, fine with me, and you have the right to practice hypocricy...but you already have that one down now don't you?
I don't hate liberal, moderate or Conservative individuals in the least. My problem is those in office who so obviously are up to no good, we've caught them lying, scheming, taking power for themselves dozens of times. And it's like "WOW I just don't.trust.government. Because they are run by ordinary people who are just as stupid, naive, weak minded, idiots as everyone else. This does not ONLY apply to this current administration, mind you.
My eyes have been opened! I'v HEARD and SEEN the video tapes, the sound bits, the FACTS that tell a different story to what the bluntly bias newspapers, the media, and Hollywood try to portray as "truth". It becomes even MORE greatly suspicious when government talks about national health care being "so amazing!", yet an overwhelming amount of the population in every other country who has had National Health Care.want.OUT. They are jumping off the band wagon, trying not to get killed on the way!

I noticed the article claims that Glenn said that Van Jones is a "Self-professed communist" - and put that comment in quotes as if to denounce Beck as a fool for even implying it.

The thing is Van Jones IS a self proclaimed communist - at least he (Van) said he was as little as 4 years ago. So is it not a fair question to ask, why is a Communist advising a president of a capitalist country on how to create jobs? What sort of jobs would a communist create? Van has implied that the green economy should be used to benefit all, specifically the downtrodden and chronically unemployed?

I thought the purpose of green jobs and a green economy was to save the planet? Why then does Van Jones want a "green economy" to be a vehicle of "social justice?"

I'm just curious... Oh wait, I must be a hater or a member of one of those right wing extremist groups Janette Napolitano warned you about...

Whatever lefties, just answer the question, do you want a communist advising the president on how to create green jobs? I don't.

It is interesting that the facts about van jones are not mentioned in this article. Only that he founded color of Change. Can we say playing the race card? Van Jones is a marxist and has written about it himself. Van Jones has been arrested and in any other presidency would have been vetted out of the job. Matea gold should mention all the facts of what was said and not just those that bend that story to an obviously liberal attach piece against Glen Beck. The one person in media who is asking the tough questions, because we all know the LA Times won't.
