UPDATED: Glenn Beck goes after Color of Change co-founder Van Jones

Glenn Beck used his popular Fox News show this afternoon to attack the background of Van Jones, a White House environmental advisor who co-founded an African American political advocacy group that organized an advertising boycott of his program.

During his 2 p.m. PDT show, Beck did not address the boycott spearheaded by Color of Change to protest the talk show host’s remark last month that he believes President Obama is “a racist.”

Instead, he spent a large share of his program suggesting that Jones, who co-founded Color of Change in 2005, is a radical. Jones now serves as a special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

During a six-minute biographical profile, set to ominous music, Beck said Jones was twice arrested for political protests and has described himself as a "rowdy black nationalist." The talk show host cast the piece as part of a broader examination of Obama's "czars," special advisers to the president who "don't answer to anybody."

"Why is it that such a committed revolutionary has made it so high into the Obama administration as one of his chief advisers?" Beck asked.

Christine Glunz, a spokeswoman for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, noted that Jones has been lauded as an environmental hero and said his entire focus is on “building clean energy incentives which create 21st-century jobs.”

“Glenn Beck is trying to change the subject,” said James Rucker, executive director of Color of Change, who noted that Jones has not been active with the group in almost two years. “The issue is his baseless fear mongering.”

Beck has gone after Jones in the past. On July 28, he called the activist a "self-professed communist" and questioned the role he was playing in the administration. His latest assault on Jones came as Color of Change announced that it has secured commitments from 36 companies who have pledged not to advertise on Beck’s popular program, including Wal-Mart and Sprint. However, some of the companies never had a presence on "Glenn Beck." Representatives of Procter & Gamble and AT&T – listed by Color of Change as companies that had signed onto the boycott – told The Times that their companies did not run spots on Beck’s program to begin with.

While the advertising boycott has generated substantial media coverage, Fox News said it has not impacted the network’s revenues or Beck’s audience. "The advertisers referenced have all moved their spots from Beck to other programs on the network so there has been no revenue lost," a spokeswoman said.

Since his Fox News show launched in January, Beck has attracted a sizable audience with his strident denunciations of the Obama administration and apocalyptic warnings about the country’s direction. Late last month, during an appearance on the morning show “Fox & Friends,” he accused Obama of having “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.”

“This guy is, I believe, a racist,” he added.

The flap that ensued did not appear to dampen Beck’s viewership. This month, his show has averaged 2.25 million viewers, 99% more than tuned in during the same period last year, when the network aired “America’s Election HQ” during the time period. And his ratings are up from July, when Beck's program averaged 2.05 million viewers. Fan websites such as Defend Glenn have called for viewers to fight back against the advertising boycott, and some media veterans have denounced the tactic as a suppression of free speech.

The controversy has triggered a broader discussion about the risks to advertisers of running commercials amid the incendiary rhetoric of cable talk shows. Clorox announced last week that it was pulling its ads off all political talk shows.

"We do not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show host,” the company said in a statement. “After a comprehensive review of political talks shows across the spectrum, at this time we have made a decision not to advertise on them. Clorox has done very little advertising on political talk shows overall, and given the sometimes inflammatory nature of these shows, we feel our advertising investment is best directed elsewhere.”

As boycott continues, Glenn Beck's audience swells

Can I ask why this article says nothing about WHY Glenn Beck did a piece on Van Jones? Regardless of your feelings of Glenn Beck, shouldn't a news organization like yourself look into the fact that the White House has given Van Jones security clearance when he has an arrest record? He had admitted to becoming radicalized while in jail and has called himself a communist. Now I believe in freedom of speech, we live in a free country if you want to be a communist who cares, but please tell me how a guy like this can get a job in the white house helping to create green jobs? Tax payer money is being used to pay this guy a salary. He is connected with many lobbyist groups. (union groups of course) I thought President Obama said no lobbyists in his administration? You are a REPORTER, do some damn investigating for the people! Isn't that your job?????

Why don't you write directly about the things Beck said and prove what he is saying is wrong. The fact is YOU CAN'T you don't have the courage or ability to dig into the things Beck is proving to be right about the socialist agenda of the Obama administration going all the way back to the Bush years. Beck has shown audio and video tapes of Van Jones and what he believes. So are we to believe he just said these things but didn't mean them? Or are you just part of the Socialist agenda...because you are too ignorant and happy in your comfortable life to believe there are forces out there using YOU using CNN using MSNBC for their ultimate goal...to CHANGE America into a something neither YOU or I recognize as FREE.

It's interesting that left continues to personally smear all of those that have an opposing viewpoint. The tolorance is from them is amazing! I wish they would practice what the preach. As black man that watch Beck, I'm hard pressed to see the "Hate" as you put it on his show (albeit the radio or Fox News). I think he hit a cord with you lefties. Neither Beck, Rush or O'Reilly stoop to the levels of MSNBC or Air-American when describing the opposition. The left if vile and nasty and full of hate....personal hate.

Not that it excuses it, but for those of you who believe the white man went to Africa and stole the slaves without the help of the tribal chief should spend some time with the history books. Do you think it evenly remotely possible that the slaves could be transported without interference from a loyal tribe leader?

Now to the one who wanted to discuss Hitler's rise to power; go to goggle and type in Weimar Republic and every place you read war reparations type in stimulus package.

Interesting that the writer admits that Beck simply used Jones' own self-descriptions, yet suggests that Beck is "accusing" Jones of things.

Confusing. does this mean that Jones is also accusing himself of being a radical? It sure seems that Jones is proud of his radical, communist background.

At least he's honest about himself. We should respect that.

A Communist is a Communist, whether we "agree" with Glenn Beck or not. And Van Jones is a self-avowed Communist. Those are his own words.

If you check up on current history you will discover that many of the really "crazy" and "lunatic fringe" ideas and predictions that Glenn Beck has been reporting for the past couple of years have actually come to pass.

And as for whether or not advertisers want to be associated with Mr. Beck's program, well they just might want to recognize the size of his audience. Because the people who agree with Glenn have just as much right to their opinions as anyone else, and there are LOTS of us.

Instead of standard fare of left-wing name calling, is there a single liberal who can present any facts that contradict what Beck is saying?

Glenn Beck is mostly asking questions and showing video clips of Van Jones.

Why is it an "assault" to show videos of Van Jones speaking for himself, showing real quotes of things he has said, and then ask questions?

The man called himself a "radical Marxist", not Glenn Beck. Beck is just asking if Obama and the WH are aware of his background and his beliefs.

Where's the issue?

When are you going to release the videotape of Rashid Khalidi farewell bash with Barack Obama and Bill Ayers in attendance? Yes, LA Times YOU and others have let this country down by not reporting THE TRUTH.

I don't want to hear accusations and slander about Beck give me facts of why you think he is a fool or dumb, or lies (dosn't speak facts) ... etc ... then I will listen ... liberals want to Palinize everyone it is a tactic they learn .... when you don't have facts use slander and try to destroy those who don't agree with them ... please can we have a dissucussion without slandering and personalizing everyone who listens to Glenn Beck. Kool aid is a term for liberals sorry ... conservatives are more independent thinkers thats why we are libertarians, and independents ... more and more pulling away from a party the 2 system party.

God bless and protect Glenn Beck. He sees our country going in a different direction than our forefathers, who authored the US Constitution, intended. He has the courage to speak out and inform anyone who is willing to listen. Listen to
what he is saying, do your own research, then make your own
conclusion. If we don't stand up for our freedom and principles, they will be gone.

either van jones said the things he is shown as saying or there is some really strange stuff going on here. if he is portrayed as he is and it's not a setup then indeed he is a card carrying communist.so? come out and say it out loud, fellow traveler.

A liberal comment "When I think of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and the likes of them, I pretty much puke. How interesting to call a man a racist who has a white mother. Most of the time when people judge others it is really a reflection of what is going on inside of them. "

I am sure many of us "whites" have black blood in us somewhere ... and I don't care ... what leads me to believe he may be a racist is his LONG STANDING associations with the likes of REV. WRight ... and the fact I can't read his college writtings and his transcripts, how he paid for college etc ... and these scary czars / officers, many of which are racist, too.

... liberals want to puke rather than discuss merits and facts of what others have to say ... they are adding antabuse to the kool aid now to keep you away from the evil truth ... I am for free speech and a free market ... I listen to oberman and other popular libs and can critique them on a facts standpoint rather then just calling them names and puking. I have nothing against obama and while his associations would lead me to believe he is a racist I wish him no harm ... I listen to the liberal talking heads but they do not argue facts just spewing of personal attacks and partial reporting ... sad the mainstream media has stooped so LOW as to personalizing political opponents ... reporting on emotion rather than fact ... eg. Sarah Palin ... I am freaked out that Obama won ... he has NO resume .... he could not get a CEO job but he can become our president ....

Are the facts Glenn gives TRUE?

If they are, what do you personally think?

Do you think a self-avowed Communist should be in charge of JOBS? What kind of JOBS do Communists approve of? Do Communists approve of jobs in the fields of trade, of competition, or of Acorn's ilk?

Van Jones co-founded Color of Change in 2005 and is a radical. Do YOU believe that? Does it bother you? Why or why not?

Jones was twice arrested for political protests and has described himself as a "rowdy black nationalist". Does that concern YOU?

Perhaps Beck's 'baseless fear mongering' isn't so BASELESS! Maybe Beck has a basis for trying to motivate real Americans to CHECK THESE THINGS OUT!

Are you personally DOING anything to see if what Beck says is true and if it is true, is doing NOTHING an option for red-blooded Americans?

Do you personally see apathy as a problem in a free society?

If you feel a stirring deep within you, what will you do with that feeling?
a) joke it off
b) think about something else
c) demonize of the messenger
d) read more articles about Van Johnson?

Please do not act like the democratic party is for blacks people they are for themselves and blacks are their pawns. Voting for them all them time ... no matter what ... call blacks all sorts of names in the bush era ... Read about how the republican party was started and how many whites were persecuted for letting blacks in the party ... dems let you in as a tool to meet their needs ... democratic party was the party of KKK and you can find memorbila to show how much they wanted to keep blacks out of politics ... read about it ... but now I find both dems and repubs to be in bed with corporate america (each having their favs) and am looking to maybe libertarian or other party to vote in to office who will really be looking out for me, my state's rights and me money.

Another liberal lie ... all conservative self made rich are somehow liars and evil cheating the system ...

"The funny thing is that people like Beck and Limbaugh, who make millions a year, are laughing themselves all the way to the bank and investing their money in the same economy they denounce. They have completely perfected the art of preaching to the common man, yet they couldn't be more opposite than "common".

a thing called a free market gave these guys money ... actual people listening to their ideas ... unlike the huffingtons of the world who have a silver spoon in their mouth and know from their ivory towers what is best for us "the little people" And how is it that these men aren't common ... is it because they are white ... self made rich men ... I also think they want to keep a free market so they and others can continue to be rich ... what is wrong with making it in America ... Glenn Beck and Rush inspire me ... but no liberals would rather bring us all down to the poor and putard standard of living. I don't get your reasoning. Through capitalism and our constitution (framework of gov.) we have had more then any other people of the world ... opportuninty and freedom .... wake up people ...

Socialism is vulgar to Americans:

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." Thomas Jefferson

I feel Beck is speaking the truth. I am very sick of this race crap. If I say something I do not like about Obama than I'm a racist. It has always been a game played by one that gets mad if I have a brain and want to believe different. I will honestly admit that it has caused me to have a lot of resentment. The race card will always be played. Black Panthers stood outside voting polls with sticks to scare people so they could not vote. What if a white person had wore a white sheet holding a stick? It would have been the same, but there would have been a big thing made of it, of course even though a court found the black panther's guilty,it was thrown out of court. If one race cant have freedom of speech, than why should the other.
