UPDATED: As boycott continues, Glenn Beck's audience swells

An advertising boycott against Fox News host Glenn Beck has succeeded in keeping most major sponsors from running commercials on his show even as the controversial commentator's viewership has grown.

Beck attracted 2.81 million viewers Monday, his third-largest audience since his show launched on Fox News in January, according to Nielsen Media Research data provided by the network. On Tuesday, nearly 2.7 million viewers tuned in, his fifth-largest viewership to date. And the conservative host got a plug from former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who urged people to watch his program in a post on her Facebook page.

“FOX News' Glenn Beck is doing an extraordinary job this week walking America behind the scenes of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and outlining who is actually running the White House,” she wrote Wednesday to her 800,000-plus supporters.

Color of Change, an African American political advocacy group, organized the boycott last month to protest Beck’s comment that he believes President Obama is a racist. The group succeeded in securing commitments from at least 36 companies that have pledged not to advertise on his show, including Wal-Mart and Sprint. Some, such as AT&T and Procter & Gamble, were not Beck advertisers to begin with, but their ads had mistakenly appeared on the program. Representatives from those companies reiterated their request not to have spots during his show. Later today, Color of Change plans to announce six more companies that also are declining to be Beck advertisers.

As a result, few major businesses remain as sponsors of Beck’s eponymous 2 p.m. PDT program. On Wednesday, the only big companies with a presence during his show were Bank of America and the Wall Street Journal, whose parent company News Corp. also owns Fox News. The rest of the commercials included spots for gold seller Rosland Capital; Ashley Furniture Home Store; Empire Carpet; Liberty Medical, a diabetes medical supplier; Johnson Law Group, an asbestos litigation firm; “Shadow Government,” a new book critical of Obama published by the National Republican Trust; and the anti-tax group TeaPartyExpress.org.

Fox News insists that the boycott has not affected its revenue, because advertisers have just moved their commercials to different time periods. And for his part, Beck appears invigorated by the challenge. “Even if the powers to be right now succeed in making me poor, drum me out … I will only be stronger for it,” he said on the air Wednesday. “And I will use American ingenuity and my ingenuity to pull myself up, and I will find another way to get this message out, on a platform that will be a thousand times more powerful. Because of my faith, I know how this story ends. The truth will set you free.”

Since returning from a weeklong vacation Monday, Beck has not explicitly addressed the boycott. Instead, he has launched a weeklong series called “Reasonable Questions for an Unreasonable Time,” in which he has argued vehemently that the Obama administration is being infiltrated by radicals seeking to undermine the U.S. Constitution.

“I have demonstrated that these radicals are not only instrumental in shaping legislation that is being jammed through at light speed, they are also by invitation personally advising the president of the United States,” he said Wednesday, calling them “radical wolves that are about to devour our republic.”

One of his most frequent targets is Van Jones, special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.  In 2005, Jones co-founded Color of Change with James Rucker, the group’s executive director. Beck supporters have charged that Color of Change launched the boycott of Beck's show in retaliation for the host's criticism of Jones.

Rucker said Jones has not been associated with the group for more than a year and had nothing to do with the boycott. "I didn’t even know Van had been a subject of Glenn Beck’s sustained attacks until after we had launched the campaign," he said. "I can say absolutely there was no involvement by Van or the White House. Beck has made these claims that are not fact-based and he needs to change the subject, and that’s what this is all about."

Beck began railing against Jones earlier this summer, dubbing him one of 32 “czars” with unchecked power in the Obama administration. He has repeatedly called him a communist, citing a 2005 profile of Jones in the East Bay Express that described Jones’ shift from a radical-activist past to more mainstream politics. On Wednesday, he made reference to the fact that Jones named his son after African guerrilla leader Amilcar Cabral.

“Should you have a communist, self-avowed revolutionary who named his 4-year-old son after a Marxist guerrilla leader, should that person be advising the president of the United States?” he asked.

Jones did not immediately respond to a request for comment made through the White House. Earlier in the week, White House spokeswoman Christine Glunz said in a statement that Jones has been lauded as an environmental hero and that his entire focus at the Council on Environmental Quality is on “building clean-energy incentives which create 21st century jobs.”

[Updated at 1:33 p.m.: According to Color of Change, 10 more companies that have recently had ads air during Beck's program have pledged not to run any further advertising on his show. The latest businesses to distance themselves from the Fox News host include Applebee's, Bank of America, Bell & Howell, DirecTV, General Mills, Kraft, Regions Financial Corp., SAM (Store and Move), Travelers Insurance and Vonage.

Bank of America, which had a spot on Beck's program Wednesday, pointed the group to a statement it gave Media Matters for America stating that its advertising had been placed on the program in error. Travelers Insurance, Bell & Howell, General Mills and DirectTV also told Color of Change that they had already placed Beck's program on their "do not air" lists and any commercials that appeared during his show were in error. Applebee's told the group that it was now dropping Beck's program, and Kraft said it had decided to stop advertising "on the more politically extreme programs on all networks."]

[Updated at 2:15 p.m .: According to a Fox News spokeswoman, the network has not run Bank of America ads during Beck's show, so any spot for the bank that aired during his program would have been a local cable purchase. In addition, the network said that Bell & Howell and SAM (Store and Move) were never Fox News advertisers.]

[Updated at 3 p.m.: SAM (Store and Move) is indeed a Fox News advertiser, a network spokeswoman clarifies. The company buys ads under the name Unigroup.]

[Updated at 4:43 p.m.: Beck posted his second-highest viewership ever Wednesday, attracting more than 3 million viewers for the hour.]

[Updated at 8:07 a.m., Aug. 28: Ashley Furniture HomeStore pulled its advertising from "Glenn Beck" as of Thursday, said Kendra Maggert, a spokeswoman for the company.]

Glenn Beck goes after Color of Change co-founder Van Jones

Thank you for the list of companies no longer airing commercials on Glenn Beck's program. I will not longer be buying anything from those companies. They need to show the same courage that Mr Beck has.

I thank God for Glen Beck and everyone else on Fox News the only real source for truth.

It shows Glenn Beck integrity that he has not shared this boycott stuff with his viewers.. I watch his show everyday and I personally think that the companies that have done this boycott should be boycotted themselves.. As of today Glenn has done nothing wrong just playing clips of Van Jones in his own words spewing hate and racist remarks.. This is a case of shoot the messenger.. God Bless you Glenn Beck for standing up to the far left loons like the LA times..

Of course, almost everyone living in LA land is a Democrat. No wonder most of you hate Beck!

Jones got cooked by his own words. Theres actual video of him saying things that are completely innapropriate. Some of you have serious problems if you can watch someone saying something on camera and just look the other way.

Van Jones is a self described "black nationalist". Why are so many people defending him in light of this? Do the same people also approve of "white nationalists" in our government or is this a just pure hypocrisy and a crude double standard? Glenn Beck simply showed video of Van Jones speaking. Van Jones took himself down by his hateful comments yet the far left, unable to think rationally blames Beck. That's a classic case of denial if I have ever seen one. Boycotting Glenn are people who have been manipulated by the left and their tactic of trying to silence free speech and framing others as racist if they don't agree with their views. Funny how they flail when Beck called Obama a racist and showed how stupid and gullible advertisers can be when minorities whine.

Hey, there are a lot of people out there who like to see car wrecks, too. That doesn't mean we should give their veiwership creedence. Hopefully the endorsement of Sarah Palin will be the kiss of death for Mr. Beck's career. If that looneytunes is a serious contender for the next presidential election I fear for the future of our country....

So, now that the van jones thing has played out I'll bet theres just a few of you ultra high IQ folks sitting out there with your foot stuck in your mouth up to the ankle. So sorry, but maybe you should have done what Glenn asked you to do, investigate for yourself. But no, its just easier to shoot your mouth off and call others stupid, but who's looking stupid now?
For those of you that want to call glenn a racist, you should watch the show that set off all the boycotting fury. There was an interview with DR kieth ablow (yes libs DR ablow) and he (DR ablow) detailed multiple instances where pres obama had made a racist remark, or surrounded himself with folks who were blatent racists like rev wright AND Van Jones. Dr ablow concluded that one or 2 instances of these things does not indicate racism, but after looking into quite a few of these incidents Dr Ablow could only logically conclude that pres obama must have some racist tendancies that he needs to delve into and try to solve. Glen then agrees with Dr ablows' conclusions.... So, that makes him a racist? or a race baiter?... No, it means that the only logical conclusion that could be drawn from all these instances is that Obama has some racist tendancies.
Truly, for those of you that dont watch Beck you should at least do what he is promoting, and that is "question boldly, and hold to the truth" Those of us that do watch beck will not fear you, or your diatribes, name calling and other nonsensical arguments based on your "feelings".. We will hold to the truth, and beat your arguments with facts every single time. God bless glenn beck for shining some light onto the cockroaches in DC. Mark Lloyd and cass sunstien are next.. Sunlight is the best disinfectant and I bet when the sun shines on those 2, the public will be just as outraged as they are over the appointment of the racist communist Van Jones

I suspect since Jones has been tossed under the bus, advertisers will see the con that's been put upon them. With Obama's numbers falling and Americans truly upset, advertisers will see that they are in a losing proposition. There's a BUYcott going on for Beck. Advertisers don't need to be seen as supporting a radical communist sympaththizer and tick off the American people. Beck's show audience has boomed since this so-called boycott. I'm sure Fox appreciates the help!

Anyone remember the last 'right wing' attempt to censor a media figure because they disagree?

I'm sure there is some lefty who has a long list.

What would happen if the 'right wingers' decided to try to terrorize all the advertisers on MSNBC? (well, honestly nobody has to do that since they are failing already and they shouldn't be allowed to blame it on somebody else).

Does the communist left really think that Fox is going to drop a program which is second in ratings for the entire cable news industry? New advertisers always show up. Speaking of advertisers, why won't they try to kill that freecreditreport.com ad?? Or how about the '$$$ for gold' ads? Or Snuggeez? How about getting THOSE idiots to pull their ads? Everybody could agree on that much. But instead you go after advertisers nobody recalls? 40+ advertisers pulled? How could I possibly not notice that? It's not like they are putting on fewer commercials.....

Somebody must not be too successful at this. And you might want to keep which of these 40+ companies are ALSO not advertising on CNN or MSNBC as well. Just to 'be fair'.

Someone asked why the White House does not refute Glenn's accusations? Listen up folks, because they are TRUE!!! Their silence supports THE FACTS, what Glenn has been DEMONSTRATING all a long. Billions of dollars are at stake and all Obama and staff would have to do is refute the argument. I wonder why no one is addressing these issues? Gosh, I don't know!!!!

Lock and Load White America, soon you will be the ones working in the cotton fields.

Go BECK!!!!
Down w/ Kraft poison foods - Ashley's Pooky Furniture - the graft sucking Bank of America - General Mills mini-minded people and quickly diminishing Applebee's and others who have abandoned the possibably only real American with a voice - Mr. Glenn Beck.
What is the matter with you people? Why would you cower to a radical black association in opposition to a real American with a backbone. This radical black intilement is devilish..... and Obama (the presidential usurper) & his cronies are not worth following to the outhouse - they will take this county down.
I am proud of you Mr. Beck - much more so than O'Reily who is wimp up side of you.

GLENN BREAKS 4.1 M Viewers last night....... Bet those advertisers wish their ads were showing.......

I will continue to support Glen Beck. I have canceled my Progressive auto ins., Sam club membership, no longer purchase Proctor and Gamble products. If these companies are so afraid Glen Beck he must really be doing the right thing.

Thank God there is someone in the media representing the everyday true American. I've lived through 13 presidents thought I'ed never fear one but Obama scares me to death. Mostly he and his czars, both republicans and democrat scare me because they don't give a damn about this country that I risk my life to protect because they are for the most part corrupt.

Do these companies really think them pulling thier ads will cause any damage? There will always be other companies who are willing to pay, the price level might drop a bit but not in a big way. Also, if for some reasong less ads play his ratings will just go up even more, nobody likes watching commericals.

Ask yourself why these individuals being challenged by Beck are being thrown overboard; does this not just further legitimize his claims?

Thanks for the list of companies no longer advertising on the Glenn Beck show. Inasmuch as I enjoy the show, this tells me which companies I will try to eliminate from my shopping. I can easily avoid General Mills, Kraft, Applebees, Geico, etc. There are plenty of alternatives. I shop occasionally at Walmart but that is easily rectified.

I like the show because Glenn Beck is neither Republican nor Democratic. He tells the truth about the rampant corruption in this country today.

I love the fact that someone can't state an opinion like he did without all the Dems crying like a 7 year old that dropped their sucker.

He clearly stated it was his opinion. Something that is protected under the United States Constitution, yet the Democrats are showing how willing they are to bend those rights to only protect their version of it. Grow up people...

Trust me... with the viewers Beck is pulling in, it won't be long before the advertisers start testing the waters again. Fox knows it and is going to rake in some nice advertising revenue once those companies start scrambling back.

mediamatters.org debunks the talking heads everyday.

I'm going to buy A.C.O.R.N tee-shirts for all my statist friends for Christmas. Let's see how truly proud of our Le Presidente they really are. What a joke of a organization. If Beck is so wrong why did Van Jones resign and the Cenus Bureau drop association with ACORN. I mean if they had a leg to stand on why doesn't Obama defend them. The reason, there is no defense that has any truth to it.
