UPDATED: As boycott continues, Glenn Beck's audience swells

An advertising boycott against Fox News host Glenn Beck has succeeded in keeping most major sponsors from running commercials on his show even as the controversial commentator's viewership has grown.

Beck attracted 2.81 million viewers Monday, his third-largest audience since his show launched on Fox News in January, according to Nielsen Media Research data provided by the network. On Tuesday, nearly 2.7 million viewers tuned in, his fifth-largest viewership to date. And the conservative host got a plug from former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who urged people to watch his program in a post on her Facebook page.

“FOX News' Glenn Beck is doing an extraordinary job this week walking America behind the scenes of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and outlining who is actually running the White House,” she wrote Wednesday to her 800,000-plus supporters.

Color of Change, an African American political advocacy group, organized the boycott last month to protest Beck’s comment that he believes President Obama is a racist. The group succeeded in securing commitments from at least 36 companies that have pledged not to advertise on his show, including Wal-Mart and Sprint. Some, such as AT&T and Procter & Gamble, were not Beck advertisers to begin with, but their ads had mistakenly appeared on the program. Representatives from those companies reiterated their request not to have spots during his show. Later today, Color of Change plans to announce six more companies that also are declining to be Beck advertisers.

As a result, few major businesses remain as sponsors of Beck’s eponymous 2 p.m. PDT program. On Wednesday, the only big companies with a presence during his show were Bank of America and the Wall Street Journal, whose parent company News Corp. also owns Fox News. The rest of the commercials included spots for gold seller Rosland Capital; Ashley Furniture Home Store; Empire Carpet; Liberty Medical, a diabetes medical supplier; Johnson Law Group, an asbestos litigation firm; “Shadow Government,” a new book critical of Obama published by the National Republican Trust; and the anti-tax group TeaPartyExpress.org.

Fox News insists that the boycott has not affected its revenue, because advertisers have just moved their commercials to different time periods. And for his part, Beck appears invigorated by the challenge. “Even if the powers to be right now succeed in making me poor, drum me out … I will only be stronger for it,” he said on the air Wednesday. “And I will use American ingenuity and my ingenuity to pull myself up, and I will find another way to get this message out, on a platform that will be a thousand times more powerful. Because of my faith, I know how this story ends. The truth will set you free.”

Since returning from a weeklong vacation Monday, Beck has not explicitly addressed the boycott. Instead, he has launched a weeklong series called “Reasonable Questions for an Unreasonable Time,” in which he has argued vehemently that the Obama administration is being infiltrated by radicals seeking to undermine the U.S. Constitution.

“I have demonstrated that these radicals are not only instrumental in shaping legislation that is being jammed through at light speed, they are also by invitation personally advising the president of the United States,” he said Wednesday, calling them “radical wolves that are about to devour our republic.”

One of his most frequent targets is Van Jones, special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.  In 2005, Jones co-founded Color of Change with James Rucker, the group’s executive director. Beck supporters have charged that Color of Change launched the boycott of Beck's show in retaliation for the host's criticism of Jones.

Rucker said Jones has not been associated with the group for more than a year and had nothing to do with the boycott. "I didn’t even know Van had been a subject of Glenn Beck’s sustained attacks until after we had launched the campaign," he said. "I can say absolutely there was no involvement by Van or the White House. Beck has made these claims that are not fact-based and he needs to change the subject, and that’s what this is all about."

Beck began railing against Jones earlier this summer, dubbing him one of 32 “czars” with unchecked power in the Obama administration. He has repeatedly called him a communist, citing a 2005 profile of Jones in the East Bay Express that described Jones’ shift from a radical-activist past to more mainstream politics. On Wednesday, he made reference to the fact that Jones named his son after African guerrilla leader Amilcar Cabral.

“Should you have a communist, self-avowed revolutionary who named his 4-year-old son after a Marxist guerrilla leader, should that person be advising the president of the United States?” he asked.

Jones did not immediately respond to a request for comment made through the White House. Earlier in the week, White House spokeswoman Christine Glunz said in a statement that Jones has been lauded as an environmental hero and that his entire focus at the Council on Environmental Quality is on “building clean-energy incentives which create 21st century jobs.”

[Updated at 1:33 p.m.: According to Color of Change, 10 more companies that have recently had ads air during Beck's program have pledged not to run any further advertising on his show. The latest businesses to distance themselves from the Fox News host include Applebee's, Bank of America, Bell & Howell, DirecTV, General Mills, Kraft, Regions Financial Corp., SAM (Store and Move), Travelers Insurance and Vonage.

Bank of America, which had a spot on Beck's program Wednesday, pointed the group to a statement it gave Media Matters for America stating that its advertising had been placed on the program in error. Travelers Insurance, Bell & Howell, General Mills and DirectTV also told Color of Change that they had already placed Beck's program on their "do not air" lists and any commercials that appeared during his show were in error. Applebee's told the group that it was now dropping Beck's program, and Kraft said it had decided to stop advertising "on the more politically extreme programs on all networks."]

[Updated at 2:15 p.m .: According to a Fox News spokeswoman, the network has not run Bank of America ads during Beck's show, so any spot for the bank that aired during his program would have been a local cable purchase. In addition, the network said that Bell & Howell and SAM (Store and Move) were never Fox News advertisers.]

[Updated at 3 p.m.: SAM (Store and Move) is indeed a Fox News advertiser, a network spokeswoman clarifies. The company buys ads under the name Unigroup.]

[Updated at 4:43 p.m.: Beck posted his second-highest viewership ever Wednesday, attracting more than 3 million viewers for the hour.]

[Updated at 8:07 a.m., Aug. 28: Ashley Furniture HomeStore pulled its advertising from "Glenn Beck" as of Thursday, said Kendra Maggert, a spokeswoman for the company.]

Glenn Beck goes after Color of Change co-founder Van Jones

A) The white house responding to Glenn Beck would only cause an escalation of the situation, because at that point it would make Glenn think he had all the power and he would start espousing even more insane ideas. Come on, the man mis-spelled oligarchy, he can't even follow the filth he's throwing.

B) have you looked up the definitions to the words you are using?

Fasicm: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition...wow, kind of feels like what the GOP are trying to do now. No one is telling the GOP to shut the H*&^ up, they are allowed their free speech, even if it is vile and untrue.

Nazism: a belief in the superiority of an Aryan race, an abstraction of the Germanic peoples. During Hitler’s time, the Nazis advocated a strong, centralized government under the Führer and claimed to defend Germany and the German people (including those of German ethnicity abroad) against Communism and so-called Jewish subversion. Ultimately, the Nazis sought to create a largely homogeneous and autarkic ethnic state, absorbing the ideas of Pan-Germanism...wow, once again sounds like the crap the GOP and Beck is spouting. Substitute Liberal for Jewish and there you have it.

C) Glenn Beck has been proven wrong on many occasions. While the birthers won't believe me, he was proven wrong about our president being born in Kenya. Global Warming...scientists have shown that the global temperature has increased due in large part to human abuse of resources. Glenn beck claims americorp is Obama's SS, which is hard to believe given that Americorp has been around since 1990, due to a bill which George HW Bush signed. Glenn beck claims that we have the best health care in the world, when a few years ago, he didn't feel that way, what with his whole botched hemorrhoid surgery. (Oh, and btw, according to the WHO, we are 37th in the world, behind many countries which have "socialized medicine"). Enough for you?

D) You people spouting hate about Muslims, have you ever spoken to one? I have quite a few friends who are muslim, and they are not the hateful people you seem to think they are. You all judge people based on the outliers of the group. It's like judging all republicans ability to empathize based on Steele's response to that poor woman who's mother died of cancer because she didn't have health insurance.

"...The media is no place for irresponsible out right lies and hate fill speech..."

LOL!!! Lee, that was the funniest thing I've read in a long time! I agree with your statement, the media is no place for irresponsible out right lies. I mean just look at Chris Matthews, or Rachael Maddow, or Dan Rather and the faked documents, or Reuters faking photo's of Israeli planes or, well examples would go on for volumes.

Glad to see that so many comment writers pick up on the fact that negative comments never discredit what Glenn Beck says and only try to attack the person. Who cares that he cries and eats M&M's like there is no tomorrow. Not important.

If what Glenn Beck says can be discredited, would you not think that the competing networks would have had a field day with Glenn Beck already?

But no, there is absolute silence. The only thing you hear are the thuds of mud being slung Glenn's way. Not a single counter argument.

How a guy like Van Jones can get away accusing white people sending poison to the black communities on video and then proceed to become an Obama advisor is beyond me. Talking about racism. The terms "Black" and "White" are irrelevant in my vocabulary and I am 45!

Anyone hearing that statement and not at least raise an eyebrow does not belong in the land of the free. By constitution the only truly free nation on earth where an individuals right to pursuit happiness are guaranteed.

I am not an American and don't live there but I am horrified to see how free people think they can exchange their independence for a false socialist security through their Obamessiah communist regime.

I never thought I'd see that day and I am very worried about your immediate future. History has proven time and time again how all great cultures have a downfall at the very point where life has gotten too good and there is nobody left to appreciate the things that make it so.

I so hope Glenn Beck is wrong but based on all the other info I find out there, I don't think he is.

It's absolutely laughable yet scary that the non-believers see Beck and Fox as a threat for what he's revealing both of Van Jones' radical past and political platform/ideology as well as that of our non-vetted, non-scrutinized, all-records hidden-or-scrubbed man at Penn 1600. I ask all of you with a little bit of intellect. Do YOU know what the foundation of America, the bedrock is? It's capitalism as described by Abe Lincoln: right to private ownership. You know what the fundamental approach of a statist such as Obama and a radical Chavez follower as Van Jones is? Destroying that right to private ownership and replacing it with an eternal dependence on government, nanny State. I don't know about you, but I didn't migrate for THAT American dream. I came here to be part of the American exception. To realize my full potential, to GROW wealth mine and yours, NOT to SUBMIT FOR RE-DISTRIBUTION!! Beck is doing us a favor.

There is now a movement for consumers to boycott companies that advertise at ANY TIME on ANY PART of Fox "News". I have signed the petition, along with over 11,000 other consumers in the first 24 hours...

How is direct qoutes from Obama and his cabinent not factual reporting? This administration is full of those so far from the center; it is this reason the Democrat's have not been able to pass ObamaCare even though they have no road blocks but themselves. The truth is that this administration is out of touch from the majority of Americans and in 2010 Americans will speak with thier votes and the Dems will suffer losses unseen only a few months ago. Hey Harry, you worried about your job? Remember, it took Carter to get Reagan.

This is an interesting article from aim.org (Accuracy in Media)regarding Glenn Beck's ongoing serious regarding Van Jones uestions/statements:

Maybe it's time for GLenn Beck followers to do their own boycotting. I propose that we boycott any company that buckles under to these left wing progressive organizations.
Conversely, try to buy from Glenn's sponsors--call and let them know you saw them on the show.

So Kurt:
No 24 hour news channels. What do you want then? 24 hour Opra and As The World Turns? hmmm? Maybe so! ROFL.

Boy Kiki Romano.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe they can't and won't challenge him.
Boy!!!! Who's the moron here. Geeezzz!

One wonders if Glenn's "1990 problem", as many seem to be calling it now, won't start hurting his ratings at some point. Why won't he provide some evidence that he's innocent of these rumors that he may have raped and murdered a young girl in 1990?

Boycott work both ways if advertiser want to boycott glen beck's show because of left wing groups like color for change then we will not buy any products from those same advertisers.

Glenn is right on... and his audience numbers obviously prove it. The liberal media has created pent-up demand for the truthful & honest reporting... thank goodness for Fox News!

Glenn Beck isn't proven wrong by the White House because the common person knows he is bat s**t crazy. When he is discredited, as always, the lunatics he calls viewers ignore it and repeat the same trash over any over again. Beck is a sad man.

I am starting a personal boycott of every business that is boycoting Glenn Beck. I am tired of companies who buckle under to bullies from the left. I will not ever do business with any of those companies.

And by the way, Glenn Beck is looking more and more correct every day. How's that Van Jones czar thing working out ?

My family and I don't miss your show I even DVR it so I can go back and study. Glenn PLEASE DO NOT STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been taught all my life by a very patriotic Dad who served in the army and is also a preacher that Oneday I would have to stand up for what I believe in. You know I it has been urgent to him for over thirty years, but now I have a great deal of urgency within myself Like so many others my husdand has lost his job and I had a massive heartattack five years ago and can't work I get diability. I have two children that for the first time in the past year and a half they barly got anything new. My daughters birthday is in three weeks my husband has tried everything to get a job he was a plumbing mechanic for thirteen years we live in North Carolina most of all building has stoped and where we live most places were small businesses. They can't afford to keep anyone on.I get $703.00 monthly. His unemployment had a eight month gap he was turned down by our goverment but his good friend who is of a diffrent ethnic group has not had a gap and his went up, they also told him If he could not find a job they would pay to retrain him to do something for the state or federal goverment and start based on what he was making so he coiuld still pay his bills excuse me, but my husband and I were both born here and have worked since we were 13 in tobacco fields and both of us have been paying into the system for right at twenty years. This other guy has been here a total of five years. What is going on that a young small AMERICAN family is on the brink of loosing everything and can hardly afford our needs and food. The country I was proud of the things I thought she stood for where are they? All these celebrities want to feed africa and all these other countries and all the people who don't belong (didn't come over the legal way) are getting everything handed to them at our expense. The places that have work are giving it to those individuals they work for less money. He worked hard to get what he was making to suppot our family it didn't seem like a whole lot then $19.50, But god would I love tohave it now. Our house burnt down, he got laid off, unemployment has stopped and we can barly keep our heads up. We wanted to be able to go to the Tea Party due to these circumstances we will watch on T.V. OH how I long to be apart of standing up for what so many have faught and many have died for. This thing called a goverment we have now is not what I grew up knowing and knowing no matter what we would number one Never let radicals run this country, number two never leave Isreals side. I hope you kow you give us hope that we are not the only ones listen

" When you have no leaders to speak of...send in the clowns and watch those ratings soar!!

Posted by: Michael | August 27, 2009 at 12:13 PM..."

Is that how Obama got elected?

Glenn Beck will say anything for a paycheck. He knows he has a racist anti-Obama audience, and can satisfy their hate with divisive opinions. Beck is a complete sell-out, and not to be taken seriously by anyone but the irrational.

It is my opinion that if wal-mart wants to boycott glen we should boycott wal-mart....all of us........that is only fair don't you think, since glen is only looking out for all of us. Yes that is what i am going to do ....please join me!

Stan and Jeremy (see your comments below),

Beck's idiocy is self evident. His charges HAVE been denounced! If you would listen to something (anything) besides FOX noise, you would know that.

OK here's one for you guys. You are secret terrorists raising money for gay Afghans to come to the US to train.

Now, prove it ain't so.

"I have yet to hear anyone answer any of Becks charges. This leads me to believe they have merit. As for his viewers IQ, How about Bill Maher's viewers?"

Posted by: Stan | August 27, 2009 at 12:28 PM

"You know what's funny, YOU ALL never want to refute the facts Beck spouts, you only want to attack him as a nut..

Shows the (lack) of strength of your argument..!"
