UPDATED: As boycott continues, Glenn Beck's audience swells

An advertising boycott against Fox News host Glenn Beck has succeeded in keeping most major sponsors from running commercials on his show even as the controversial commentator's viewership has grown.

Beck attracted 2.81 million viewers Monday, his third-largest audience since his show launched on Fox News in January, according to Nielsen Media Research data provided by the network. On Tuesday, nearly 2.7 million viewers tuned in, his fifth-largest viewership to date. And the conservative host got a plug from former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who urged people to watch his program in a post on her Facebook page.

“FOX News' Glenn Beck is doing an extraordinary job this week walking America behind the scenes of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and outlining who is actually running the White House,” she wrote Wednesday to her 800,000-plus supporters.

Color of Change, an African American political advocacy group, organized the boycott last month to protest Beck’s comment that he believes President Obama is a racist. The group succeeded in securing commitments from at least 36 companies that have pledged not to advertise on his show, including Wal-Mart and Sprint. Some, such as AT&T and Procter & Gamble, were not Beck advertisers to begin with, but their ads had mistakenly appeared on the program. Representatives from those companies reiterated their request not to have spots during his show. Later today, Color of Change plans to announce six more companies that also are declining to be Beck advertisers.

As a result, few major businesses remain as sponsors of Beck’s eponymous 2 p.m. PDT program. On Wednesday, the only big companies with a presence during his show were Bank of America and the Wall Street Journal, whose parent company News Corp. also owns Fox News. The rest of the commercials included spots for gold seller Rosland Capital; Ashley Furniture Home Store; Empire Carpet; Liberty Medical, a diabetes medical supplier; Johnson Law Group, an asbestos litigation firm; “Shadow Government,” a new book critical of Obama published by the National Republican Trust; and the anti-tax group TeaPartyExpress.org.

Fox News insists that the boycott has not affected its revenue, because advertisers have just moved their commercials to different time periods. And for his part, Beck appears invigorated by the challenge. “Even if the powers to be right now succeed in making me poor, drum me out … I will only be stronger for it,” he said on the air Wednesday. “And I will use American ingenuity and my ingenuity to pull myself up, and I will find another way to get this message out, on a platform that will be a thousand times more powerful. Because of my faith, I know how this story ends. The truth will set you free.”

Since returning from a weeklong vacation Monday, Beck has not explicitly addressed the boycott. Instead, he has launched a weeklong series called “Reasonable Questions for an Unreasonable Time,” in which he has argued vehemently that the Obama administration is being infiltrated by radicals seeking to undermine the U.S. Constitution.

“I have demonstrated that these radicals are not only instrumental in shaping legislation that is being jammed through at light speed, they are also by invitation personally advising the president of the United States,” he said Wednesday, calling them “radical wolves that are about to devour our republic.”

One of his most frequent targets is Van Jones, special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.  In 2005, Jones co-founded Color of Change with James Rucker, the group’s executive director. Beck supporters have charged that Color of Change launched the boycott of Beck's show in retaliation for the host's criticism of Jones.

Rucker said Jones has not been associated with the group for more than a year and had nothing to do with the boycott. "I didn’t even know Van had been a subject of Glenn Beck’s sustained attacks until after we had launched the campaign," he said. "I can say absolutely there was no involvement by Van or the White House. Beck has made these claims that are not fact-based and he needs to change the subject, and that’s what this is all about."

Beck began railing against Jones earlier this summer, dubbing him one of 32 “czars” with unchecked power in the Obama administration. He has repeatedly called him a communist, citing a 2005 profile of Jones in the East Bay Express that described Jones’ shift from a radical-activist past to more mainstream politics. On Wednesday, he made reference to the fact that Jones named his son after African guerrilla leader Amilcar Cabral.

“Should you have a communist, self-avowed revolutionary who named his 4-year-old son after a Marxist guerrilla leader, should that person be advising the president of the United States?” he asked.

Jones did not immediately respond to a request for comment made through the White House. Earlier in the week, White House spokeswoman Christine Glunz said in a statement that Jones has been lauded as an environmental hero and that his entire focus at the Council on Environmental Quality is on “building clean-energy incentives which create 21st century jobs.”

[Updated at 1:33 p.m.: According to Color of Change, 10 more companies that have recently had ads air during Beck's program have pledged not to run any further advertising on his show. The latest businesses to distance themselves from the Fox News host include Applebee's, Bank of America, Bell & Howell, DirecTV, General Mills, Kraft, Regions Financial Corp., SAM (Store and Move), Travelers Insurance and Vonage.

Bank of America, which had a spot on Beck's program Wednesday, pointed the group to a statement it gave Media Matters for America stating that its advertising had been placed on the program in error. Travelers Insurance, Bell & Howell, General Mills and DirectTV also told Color of Change that they had already placed Beck's program on their "do not air" lists and any commercials that appeared during his show were in error. Applebee's told the group that it was now dropping Beck's program, and Kraft said it had decided to stop advertising "on the more politically extreme programs on all networks."]

[Updated at 2:15 p.m .: According to a Fox News spokeswoman, the network has not run Bank of America ads during Beck's show, so any spot for the bank that aired during his program would have been a local cable purchase. In addition, the network said that Bell & Howell and SAM (Store and Move) were never Fox News advertisers.]

[Updated at 3 p.m.: SAM (Store and Move) is indeed a Fox News advertiser, a network spokeswoman clarifies. The company buys ads under the name Unigroup.]

[Updated at 4:43 p.m.: Beck posted his second-highest viewership ever Wednesday, attracting more than 3 million viewers for the hour.]

[Updated at 8:07 a.m., Aug. 28: Ashley Furniture HomeStore pulled its advertising from "Glenn Beck" as of Thursday, said Kendra Maggert, a spokeswoman for the company.]

Is this Beck person a veteran with a certified DD214 or DD220? If not, he cannot speak for those who put their bodies and not their mouths in defense of the Republic.

Thank God the members of our military take an oath to "defend the Constitution of the United States of America, against all enemies, foreign and domestic..." and not to any one person or institution. The Constitution will survive.

I hope liberals keep up the garbage like is posted on this thread. They are so blinded by Obamessiah that they are unable to see the truth. There was a time in my life where I couldn't understand how dictatorships came to be, now I understand. I wonder how liberals will explain their support for Obamessiah two their children and grandchildren.

Like I said however please keep up the vile liberal venom, 2010 is going to be a lot of fun!

I'll take your bet, Debbie Gomez. My IQ is 140 (Mensa test), and I have a Master's Degree in Education. I take notes from the Glenn Beck show, check out the info, and find he's nearly 100% correct on what he says. What is so sickening about the Left is instead of stating facts, most of you call names and denigrate those who don't agree with you. You think ABC, NBC, and CBS tells the truth? Take Journalism 101, and a third grader could tell you how newscasters can easily slant a story. Bias is everywhere.

Hey Alverant,

Name one thing, specifically, that Glenn is lying about? He questioned Bush over immigration reform and the Patriot Act. He's asking relevant questions and no one has been able to debunk any of his facts. The administration is pushing an agenda that is eerily in line with the radical backgrounds of those admitted Marxists advising him. If you're repulsed because of his "conservatism" (conservation of limited gov't and adherence to the Constitution), then say so. Using that bias to disagree with the facts shows a lack of understanding of history and economics.

Here is the new meaning of RACIST:

R--eal
A--merican
C--onstitutionalist
I--mpeaching
S--ocialist
T--raitors

Beck is paranoid and delusional. Unfortuantely there are people out there who believe what he says. and that is the real danger. There is a related post at http://iamsoannoyed.com/?page_id=588

This ad boycott, started by a political advocacy group founded by Van Jones, is exactly what the Nazis did when they came to power. In their case it was the Jews. Jewish businesses in Germany were boycotted, at the urging of Hitler's political allies and eventually the government itself. I do not agree with Beck's comments about Obama being a racist. However, I do believe in the right of people to speak their minds, even if I don't always agree. When boycotts like this are started, it is not to punish an individual, but to stifle free speech. If people disagree with Beck's political views, then don't tune in. When politically connected organizations launch retaliatory boycotts, free speech is diminished. When the organization leading the boycott was founded by one of Obama's senior advisors, to claim that there is no nexus between the government and the boycott efforts is naive at best and a lie at worst. By the way, when the Nazis started their boycotts of Jewish businesses, many of Germany's major corporations joined in, just like some major companies are doing today with Beck's show. If this politically inspired boycott is successful, who will be next? You don't have to be a radical liberal or conservative to see where this could lead. We should be voting with our remotes, not supporting boycotts that stifle free speech.

Actually I think what he presents in informative and I believe it. Beck continue with the information because media is becoming very limited in what they will present to Americans.

keep up the good work glenn beck. i will not suport any company who boycots your show. obama is a racest i saw that from the begining and radical like is mentor wright ayers etc etc. keep reporting the facts gleen beck. because the mainstream liberal media sure isnt

A lot of racist organizations are better at hiding their racism , to truly tell if they are a racist group, take out the words black, colored, or negro, and insert white,if it then becomes a racist organization because of the word white being inserted, then it was a racist group all along, For example, National Association for the advancement of colored people not racist? National Association For the Advancement of White People, VERY RACIST, United Negro College Fund, not racist? United White College Fund, DEFINITELY RACIST, Color of Change-Strengthening black Americans political voice, and bringing blacks out of economic poverty, Not racist? Color of Change- Strengthening white Americans political voice, and bringing whites out of economic poverty, VERY RACIST. So when these groups want to accuse someone of being a racist, they need to look in the mirrow

I love the people that make fun of Beck using name calling. What are we, playground bullies? He deserves these ratings and is a true American, whether you agree with his politics or not.

It’s interesting that many of the comments about Glen Beck are based on nothing more than personal hyperbolae. I took the challenge Glen presented and fact checked 7 items to date. Not one was found to be in error. Instead of calling him names, why don’t we fact check his assertions and see where it takes us. For you Obama supporters, prove Glen Beck wrong instead of resorting to name calling and venting in general. I don’t see Glen’s assertions as a democratic or republican issue but rather an American one. I knew we were in for change when Obama was elected but who among you expected the change we received so far? How’s that working out for you? For those of you who supported Bush, how did that work out for you? We need to look at the issues through the prism of Americans first and party loyalty second.

Reality check: 2.7 million out of 300+ million is not much to be proud of, especially when you have about 200 million who think you are an utter fool. Even Kraft Foods won't advertise on this disingenuous McCarthy impersonator's show anymore. Maybe Beck needs to show us some tears like he did for all those 9/11 victims he also says he "hates".

Its called FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!Why doesn't anyone respond to any of his so called allegations? I believe its because they know what he says has merit and want him removed from TV before more people learn the truth. Ive watched and listened and studied not just listened and maybe everyone else should do the same then see who is the ignorant one. Obama made it clear his race opinion as far as i'm concerned when he spoke on national TV about a white police officer acting "stupidly" when he didn't have the facts. Heaven forbid that been a white President saying those things about a black police officer on TV. Its time people used their FREEDOM OF SPEECH and let the others know theres a lot that feel this way and we ARE NOT AFRAID TO SPEEK OUT!!!!Open your eyes America before its to late. Thank you Glenn Beck for not being afraid to speak the truth!!

Do you trust the Government? Do you trust a president that puts people around him that are avowed communists. As for IQ, I am a genius and can think for myself. Glenn Beck is RIGHT!!!! Sarah Palin is RIGHT!!! Why doesn't the White House have any answers to Beck's questions? Because he is right on the mark. May God bless America. I pray for Obama but he needs to be impeached for the evil intent in his heart to turn this country over to socialism.

Fox News a danger? Are you kidding? It is the only source that relates the facts!!! Glenn Beck has obviously hit a note when advertisers are pulling out of his show. I will not support those advertisers who did. They haven't created a culture of hatred--the administration did. Beck doesn't just go after dems, he goes after any/all of our elected officials who refuse to listen to their constituents--remember, they work for us; instead they have only their best interest at heart and the rest of us just don't matter. Come on, they have their own health insurance that not one of them is willing to give up? Does that not strike a chord with anyone? Where were all of you when the Bush administration was being demonized? Let's play fair, that is all I ask. And there is nothing wrong with asking hard questions and oh, yeah, expecting answers that are not condescending.

Just because people watch him doesn't mean they agree with him. Just like some people watch car racing for the wrecks, some watch Beck to see what insane thing he'll say next. So his notoriety attracted more listeners, that doesn't mean they're all teabaggers.

I have recently started watching Glenn Beck and it is the first time I've felt that I am getting the truth. We are losing our Democracy and have been for many years under many Presidents. Will we have a Revolution? Disclose all information to we the people on backgrounds of politicians, advisers, etc. Close our borders instead of worrying about their votes. Don't give our social security to illegal aliens. Stop bailing out banks and corporations, balance our budget. The list is endless! Printing money without gold means nothing.

Instead of attacking Glenn Beck, why doesn't the L.A. Times do the job it was designed to do and investigate Mr. Beck's claims. Are you, and all liberals in this country, afraid that Mr. Beck just might be right? If the same charges had been leveled against Mr. Bush during his presidency, you would certainly have spared no expense and left no rock overturned to see if the claims were true. The truth is that you are just another mouthpiece for the Democratic Party in general and the Obama White House in particular, and no amount of denying or filibustering is going to change that fact. All you liberals are just as close-minded as well. Oh, and by the way, boycotts work both ways.
