Letterman apologizes for joke, but Palin supporters vow to continue fight

Under fire for a risque joke last week, David Letterman has apologized to Gov. Sarah Palin and her supporters. But a group urging CBS to fire the host says it's still not enough.

On CBS' "Late Show" tonight, Letterman says he's sorry about a monologue earlier this month in which he joked that New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez impregnated Palin's daughter during a game. Letterman has said he intended the joke to be in reference to Palin's 18-year-old daughter Bristol, but Gov. Palin actually attended the game with her 14-year-old daughter Willow. Some critics have accused Letterman of joking about statutory rape.

"I told a bad joke," Letterman told viewers at an afternoon taping. "I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception.  And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke.  It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault."

He concluded, "I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future."

However, the Los Angeles talk radio host behind the group firedavidletterman.com told The Times that Letterman's apology falls short.

"I'm glad he's acknowledged we're right," said John Ziegler, a creator of the film "Media Malpractice: How Obama Got Elected and Palin Was Targeted" and who this month began a new show on KGIL. "I think it's a good first step in the right direction, but I don't think it's enough." Part of the problem, he added, is that Letterman made a "horrendous attempt at an apology" last week, when he devoted several relatively light-hearted minutes to the controversy, invited Palin on his program and repeated the joke.

Ziegler said he was not sure what sanction Letterman should face, but options should include suspension and firing. The host could also donate to a charity of Gov. Palin's choice, he said. Meanwhile, the group is still planning a rally Tuesday outside the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York, where Letterman tapes his show.

CBS did not respond to a request for comment beyond Letterman's remarks.

Give Dave a raise. These right-wing extremist shills are full of crap.

This loser of late night is just a creep. I stopped watching this CREEP back in the 80's. I am certainly no fan of
Palin or the far right, nor am i a fan of the far left. He lost complete appeal to anyone with half a brain and only collects people of hate into his fanbase (just look at the comments in this post).

David Letterman has disgraced himself, women and children all over the world. No apology can change the sexist, mean and highly inappropriate "jokes" that he made about Sarah Palin, her family, young women/children, and stewardesses. What shocks me even more is the reaction of anyone, especially the media, who have tried to minimize his outrageously inappropriate comments. David Letterman is no longer "America's Funnyman" in my book and I hope CBS does the right thing and takes him off the air....permanently. ~ An American Mother and Parent~

Looks like we have ultra-radicals making headlines again!

Settle down, drift to the middle, and enjoy your fellow Man!

Most of you only see Sarah Palin through the filter of the media. Like those that have been brainwashed to hate the Clintons at all cost, you have happily joined the Palin lynch mob. Sexism and mysogyny is hatred. I am amazed that so-called liberals can be as vicious and irrational as the far right. But that is definitely the case.

So now it is OK for comedians to humorously refer to Michelle Obama as a cheap attention seeking Chicago slut living off her husband's fame. Or Obama's daughters as ripe targets for old guys to pursue and lust after. Get a cheap laugh. Then apologize and defend your actions as 'just a joke' and all should be forgotten!
You will be safe because the women's movement will not call for your sacking (like Din Imus); Al Sharpton will still be outraged because you are only abusing a right wing white woman and her children.

David’s joke was no doubt of poor research and clearly of bad taste. However I can hardly see it showing Mr. Letterman supporting statutory rape or anything perverse in any way. It was simply a joke bad or ill humored as it was it was in fact just a joke. One he also apologized for saying twice now, done deal let’s move on.

What about you Dave? I have a joke, let's talk about your wife Dave, has anyone here ever seen Daves wife? Google her, She's a 2 bagger, 1 bag needed for your head and 1 needed for hers. She is beyond fugly and she is dumpy. Perhaps thats why Dave feels so threatened by a beautiful woman.

Maybe Obama should get a czar for Letterman. I used to watch Letterman every night, but his personal feud with Sarah Palin is as sickening as Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donald's bickering was. While I'm not the biggest Sarah Palin fan in the world, this is sooo wrong. I'd like to see the public's reaction if his comment's had been made about Obama's family, can you imagine..... I stopped watching Letterman as soon as Conan started anyway. David enjoy it while you can.

Get a life.

John Ziegler is obviously someone that wants to get attention and do a few media interviews and be somebody...Guess what, 99% of people are over this, and you will soon fade back into your nothingness.

David Letterman has been around for a very long time and isn't going anywhere...You can go away now.

This is just a very, very lame attempt at getting Sarah Palin back into the spotlight, after everyone, even people like me who aren't even Americans, had forgotten all about her.
How pathetic that she should *USE* her daughter for this.
Good thing is, she only keeps on exposing how retarded and incapable of FOLLOWING a conversation she is.

Does anyone here remember All In The Family?? That show would have to be on HBO now. Give it a rest and stop preaching about the good old days. If itmwas the good old days Bristol Palin would not have bee on the cover on People because she got knocked up as a teenager. Oh and we domhave this thing called the first ammend kent which means we protect all speech, not just the speech that you agree with or that does not make people feel icky. Get a life

Dave has turned out to be a Bitter old man! I was a fan in the 80's and back then he was great! & I was disappointed when he didn't get Carsons spot on the Tonight Show. But since he didn't get that spot he has become a bitter man and it shows in his poor sense of so called "Comedy" I stopped watching him years ago but when I heard about and the saw his shows concerning Sarah Palin & her family not to mention his Crass remarks about Airline attendants ,And that first "so called " apology! WOW !! He was so smug and arrogant . I got mad! I have contacted 4 of the major sponsors and three of them have responded back telling me that they do not support this type of behavior and that they have informed CBS of this . Dave Letterman needs to get off of National TV !!!!! . I think with his crass style of humor would go over better on radio maybe a co host with Howard Stern ! Now that would be a good team!! Two Class-less Morons!!

Okay there is a lot of mud slinging, so in reply to all of you far left liberals that want to destroy our country you can go screw yourself as long as it is not my daughter. This is my Freedom of Speech moment.

At this point, it looks like a pathetic bid for relevance on Palin's part. Sarah, accept the apology graciously and move on.
Also, why is it that the most outraged never seem to have spellcheck or any better sense of syntax/grammar than the governor of Alaska.

Good to see there are still some people with common sense standing up for Dave.

He's a comedian - its his JOB to make fun of current events. It was obvious he wasn't anywhere close to talking about rape, let alone a 14 year old.

This over-the-top-make-a-mountain-out-of-a-molehill politically-correct boolsheet really needs to stop.

15 people at their huge rally. "turnout at the event was not representative of the number of people who have responded to his site and e-mailed."

Yeah it's rough having a little wingnut group that no one really cares about. Then again these people are rallying behind Palin of all people. Pray she doesn't get re-elected. Can we sell Alaska off to the Russians?

All the feigned outrage of the Palin camp & followers is just ridiculous …

"What do you get when you cross Bristol Palin with a baby seal?"

A: "A cuddly creature that loves heavy petting!"

A: "A cold hearted fur queen that makes you want to go clubbin' all night!"

A: "I don't know, but it has an angry polar bear for a grandmother and can see Russia from it's house!"

Come add your punchline to the Bristol Palin joke of the day! @ http://www.facebook.com/bethisbell

I stopped watching both Leno and Letterman. Both of their monologs have gotten decidedly nasty and bitter over the years. I turn on the shows at midnight usually, because their standup routines are over by then and they are on with the guests. Lately though, I seem to tune in only when there are animal handlers scheduled to appear. Nothing funnier than animals behaving badly. The civility in television comedy has been gone for many years, I am not not amused by what is passed off as "jokes". It is nothing more than personal oppinons and idealogical commentary.
