ABC cancels 'The Unusuals'

Getprev-1

As the official network announcements draw near and network executives prepare to announce their lineups in Manhattan this week, there are nine series across the broadcast networks waiting to hear if they will be renewed.

But others already have received the bad news: ABC canceled "The Unusuals," which premiered this spring and hasn't found an audience. Although CBS has not canceled "Without a Trace," and the CW has not canceled "Privileged," those series are not likely to return this fall, according to sources close to the shows.

ABC hasn't rendered a verdict on "Samantha Who?" or "Surviving Suburbia." CBS is sitting on "The Unit," "The New Adventures of Old Christine," "Gary Unmarried" and "Rules of Engagement." NBC is weighing "My Name Is Earl," "Medium" and "Law & Order," though the latter two are expected to survive.

Too bad--This is a good show but it takes some pondering--the storyline is complex enough that it takes several episodes to really comprehend what's going in. Other programs of this sort were saved in the past by their core fans persuading the network brass to give them more time. These days all business (including show business) has become so fixated on the next shareholders' report that such is unlikely to happen.

I thought "The Unusuals" was just that - UNUSUAL. It was fresh, compelling and shot in a way that was very different from the other blah blah cop shows that stayed on for years. It was in a tough time slot and not enough promo work from ABC. Of all the shows that ABC should have paid attention to was this show. The plots, the B/C story lines were different, fun, vibrant and ABC just turned their back on this show. If this show ever comes out of DVD I'm going to buy the entire series.

I am not surprised at ABC cancelling this show. When they could cancel such lovely and well-thought out shows such as "Pushing Daisies". they can cancel anything which is even remotely intelligent. This show had a lot of promise and a very refreshing cast. However, I am sure the average audience of the ABC found it too far beyond their 2 minute reality-talent-soapy-scum drama attention spans.

It makes you wonder who has a Nielson box on their TVs anyway. Does the core audience of such a show prefer the inflexibility of watching it whenever the network broadcasts it? In this day and age of TV-on-demand/via-net, the only ones who faithfully stick to watching the idiot box on schedules don't really appreciate a show that exercises their intellect a bit. Small wonder that well-crafted shows get cancelled because of a biased narrow targeted viewership.

These are the same geniuses on ABC that killed a better show, that carried better ratings in the same time slot--Life on Mars. Will they ever learn. ABC starts every season with fans of their most recent poorly promoted well produced shows angry at them and not watching the next wave of new shows. If you want to help us stop this cycle come to the 125 Life on Mars fan site . See what we are doing and join our efforts. Thank You

Yup, no surprise that ABC has canceled another interesting show. Like Frank said, there's no shortage of geniuses over at the ABC marketing and scheduling department. Life on Mars, which was a much better show and with a larger audience, suffered the same fate in that time slot. Not because there weren't viewers or because "it didn't click with viewers." It's that intriguing shows like this don't survive after Lost, which is already intriguiing enough. Plenty of people loved Life on Mars, and now The Unusuals, who recorded it and watched later. I think that if ABC left Life on Mars on the air for another season, it would have shot up in viewership, especially if ABC had mapped out the schedule a little better. Everyone knows the Nielsens aren't as accurate as they claim, and I think we'll see networks taking it upon themselves to find better means of gaugeing how a show does.

ABC SUCKS PERIOD!! I'm not watching another show on this network ever again. Just this year they canceled Eli Stone, Life on mars and now the unusuals which I have to say was a real fun quirky show. The unusuals were given what 3 shows and it's suppose to catch on ABC executives are just palin dumber then dirt bye bye ABC I hope you like being ranked in the bottom of all networks because thats were you are going to be by the end of next yea. Because we are all sick of you!

Dear NBC, The Unusuals was one of the best scripted, casted, filmed shows that I've viewed on any network in a long time. Thanks to my TiVo, I was able to capture all episodes while spending time in the hospital. Too bad the networks don't have a means to track viewers that own and use a TiVo.
The acting (actors) were so good, as was the film cutting (editing), that I hope the network will at least use it to replace those new shows that will be cancelled soon after launching.
Don (a disappointed viewer
PS: I hope that the LA Times will be kind enough to forward this and the other emails to the network....I for one don't know how to contact them....I never take the time to write my views...this should be read by the network for sure....note: I also viewed those different episodes that were televised multiple times during the week. I suspected at the time that the network may have already made up their minds to cancel and were using up episodes already in the "can". Too bad-Too Sad!

come on... perhaps some of ABC's executives should be given only five days to gain a fan-base amongst their staff. they may be well qualified, sure. but, there may be under-qualified employees watching, not interested in experience or education, or who mr. ceo's father is. but, hey. the guy that spilled coffee on his shirt this morning, who came in late (which is his habitual practice) didn't see you nod at him when he said "morning, boss". guess what? that guy's pissed. can the man in the suit. who cares whether or not he was planning to let the late guy off on memorial day... and that a 10% pay raise was being entertained over the boss' breakfast casserole. give the new corner office a shot, people.

the unusuals was a great show! maybe dish network or direct tv should consider dropping ABC. i'd rather watch re-runs of infomercials than tune in for another great debut season, only to be let down after five weeks of air time.

call wells-fargo and tell them that i've made payments for 45 consecutive months... i'm a good customer. tell them to disregard that and come get my townhouse. take the payment book to the ghetto and give it to the next american idol.

It's funny to me how short sighted ABC is... The Unusuals is pitted against American Idol, that vapid piece of drivel, and after only a month and a half ABC has decided to axe it. It never ceases to amaze me how wonderfully quirky, intelligent programs are dropped in favor of something that appeals to the brain-dead masses. I'm half considering boycotting ABC. They don't have anything I watch anyway, what with this latest development.

I love The Unusauls. I cannot believe that ABC is not going to keep it. I was so happy to have something on Wednesdays at 10. The CSI New York is so awful. My husband and I watch CBS 99 percent of the time. This is the only show that we watch that is not on CBS because we enjoy this new show. I hope that CBS picks it up and we don't lose it altogether.

ABC SUCKS! i agree...pushing daises cancelled!?...i had just started to see what the Unusuals was about...Eli!..and well life on Mars did suck...but i mean 1 season!...bull!! i cant believe it....Greys Anatomy and Ugly Betty are on the steady decline..and to fill the unusuals time slot is According to Jim!!....that is sad!..

I was really disappointed to see tonight is the Series Finale for this show. I really liked it and think if the station gave it a real shot it would catch on. Many shows that start in the spring just don't stand a chance because people want to be outside after winter not watch TV, give this show a fall re-start and see a difference.

I started watching this show after some other shows ended. It was in a bad time slot I think, and introduced at the wrong time too. Once I started watching it, I really liked it, because it's so different from all the other cop shows. It's got some humor mixed in and the characters are actually interesting. I think if they gave it time to grow and actually promoted it, the show would do better. We all know that won't happen though and this show will go without hardly anyone even knowing it was on. Sad to see it go. Just glad it wasn't on long enough for me to get attached to it.

The Unusauls was great. One of my ventures away from CBS evening programs, other then LOST. Hopefully CBS or a cable will pick it u p. Is there an address where we can register complaints?

"The Unusuals" is more like "ER" than the show the put as it's replacement. I think ABC did a bad job in the previews it put out for the premiere episode. I thought the previews were stupid but luckily for me my son was asleep on my lap and I didn't want to move to get the remote so I watched and loved it. But it is like ABC to cancel a good series. I think they want to be the All Reality channel!

This show had GREAT chemistry right the the first episode, many shows never find it but this show was amazing right from the get go. BRING IT BACK!!!

The canceling of the Unusuals, and the earlier canceling of Eli Stone and other shows various viewers listed labove eaves me cold towards network TV. Anybody with a good idea for a new show should not bother with what used to be the big three, go to USA or another cable station that is willing to take on shows that break the mold. Who needs or cares about how good someone thinks they can dance, sing, lose weight, or find food in the jungle. I'm not going to bother watching any shows during their first season anymore, for I am surely going to like them and then become bitter as they are canceled.

Well at least I have some good books.

It don't make no difference to ABC in any way shape or form about US the viewers getting shafted each and every time they decide to end a show that viewers got totally engrossed into. We can write about Eli Stone, Life On Mars and The Unusuals till we blue in the face. They know what they are doing and I know what I'm wanting to do and my final decision is to kick ABC to the curb ABC makes me sick litterally your a poor excuse for a TV station good ridens. By the way it just dawned on me that maybe you do this so you can get your kicks to read about how you make us furious. Wow what a cheap thrill!

I am very disappointed that the Unusuals was cancelled. It was a fun show with good acting, interesting film quality, intelligent and intriguing characters and script. I hope the network will try it again-- it is a shame to have this show disappear!
