Monday night’s episode of‘The City’ took us on a trip to Miami, Fla., where apparently, desire lurks around every bend. From the thong-clad bottoms by the pool to the cleavage-baring blouses at the bar, Miami was a frisky twentysomething’s dream.

And so began the age-old waltz of the cheater and the cheated. Jay’s ex reappeared, stirring up Whitney Port’s latent fears of her grungy beau’s infidelity, and Allie’s boyfriend, Adam, frolicked with a bevy of babes at the club, leading the ever-articulate Erin to bestow upon him ‘the boobie award for the night.’

The whole cheating theme was a bit heavy-handed, but the episode did brush on an interesting tension: the tension between a man’s words and a woman’s intuition.

‘This conversation’s making me nauseous,’ announced Whitney while discussing Jay’s run-in with his ex. Translation? That alarm inside me is going off. The one that screams, ‘cheater-cheater-cheater.’ Or perhaps Erin said it best: ‘I smell a little ahi tuna. Something’s fishy.’ (OK, you’re right. Erin totally did not say it best.)

Interestingly, viewers still do not know whether or not Jay and Adam are unfaithful to their respective gal pals. And because neither man has confessed, Whitney and Allie remain stuck in a terrible limbo, measuring their lover’s words against their own intuition.

If Jay and Adam are in fact disloyal, the two roomies have very different cheating styles. Adam believes the best defense is a good offense. Thus, when Allie tells Adam Erin saw him flirting, he shoots back, ‘like Erin’s one to talk. Erin’s got three different boyfriends.’

OK ... but what does that have to do with anything?

All of the ‘honeys’ and ‘sweeties’ and ‘babies’ in the world cannot erase what is written all over Adam’s spray-tanned face. And Allie sees it too. How long will she deny what we all know so well?

(And on a side note, did anybody else think Allie had much more chemistry with that hunky model guy than she ever has with Adam?)

And now on to Jay, whose cheating personality is very close to being cracked by WhitPo. ‘I don’t want to be played for a fool,’ announced Whit, her eyes boring into Jay like lasers. Cue Jay’s umpteenth nonsensical response. Jay’s cheater personality is ‘bumbling.’

The eppy wrapped up with ‘Potsy’s girlfriend’ (where’s the Fonz?) telling Whit that Jay was not trustworthy. ‘There’s always something with Jay,’ Potsy’s gal announced, her vague statement dripping with innuendo. It won’t be long before Whitney uncovers the real story.

In Adam and Allie’s case, this could go on for a while, mainly because unlike Whitney, who really wants to know the truth, Allie is desperate not to discover it.

(Is it just me, or is slovenly old Nevan looking a lot more desirable all of the sudden?)

Till next week,
