America's Next Top Shorty
Ladies, you know that lie you tell yourself when you look at fashion models? "The one thing keeping me from being a model is my height"? Well, now there's no excuse. Removing itself further than ever from the actual world of fashion, for its 13th cycle, "America's Next Top Model" has now put a height MAXIMUM on its contestants: a whopping 5 feet, 7 inches.
“There have been top supermodels in the past that weren’t as tall as the industry demands, like fashion icon Kate Moss,” said Tyra Banks in a press release announcing the casting call. “So we are changing up ‘Top Model’ for cycle 13 and making it a year for the shorter model!”
What's going to be the gimmick for the next casting call? Models with no faces?

Please send me any information on cycle 13. I always believed I could be America's next top model, if I were just a little taller! Now I believe this is my shot!

obviously, the producers have already picked who they want to win and I'll bet she's....5'7.

"What's going to be the gimmick for the next casting call? Models with no faces?"
What do you mean models with no faces? I have seen plenty of unattractive models who the only thing they have going for them is being tall and freakishly thin.

i agree pretty much anyone who is tall and skinny can be a model... make up and photo shop do all the REAL work. Hey the world is changing, the fashion industry needs to do as well or the will end up like the world´s economy......

This is ridiculous. That show is what gave me confidence to be tall. Short girls get everything, cant they at least give us tall girls this industry.

wow,.
how very pleasant of you to insist that being short is the same as "being faceless" in the fashion industry. I'm surprised you write for a newspaper but, then again, it is the los angeles times. the casting calls arent over and i for one am determined to prove your less than average, pion opinion wrong! I believe the modeling world will find a great, SHORT attribute through americas next top model :cycle 13!
good day dumbass!

(I am not a big Trya fan, but) For the tall people who are looking down at us in envy:
Has it ever occured to you guys that short girls have just as much of an advantage AND disadvantage from their height. When I was 14 I prayed to God to somehow miraculously give me a growthspurt in my legs. Just so they can be thinner and longer. But it never happened, I am still 5'5. I always looked at my 5'8 friends in hopes that I too could be as tall as them by the time puberty ends. And it was more of a slap in the face when my sisters are 5'10 and I am just a hollogram in comparison.
I quote the IDIOT above me: "This is ridiculous. That show is what gave me confidence to be tall. Short girls get everything, cant they at least give us tall girls this industry." ummm...YOU'RE RIDICULOUS!!! Short girls certantly don't get everything, they didn't get this industry. Clothes should be made for women of all races, shapes, and sizes. That was the purpose for fashion, to make a woman feel beautiful reagardles. We want to be as confident, tall and thin as these models who are giants. Tall people already have an advantage in sports and modeling, why can't short people get a chance too?
I am relieved to see that Tyra has overcome the height discrimination this fashion industry has posted. I just hope too that soon there won't be weight preferance either. KUDOS TO TYRA!!!!!!!

Does anyone know where to turn in the application?
Posted by: Jade | March 04, 2009 at 11:36 PM

It is great that Tyra is opening the image of a model. Models do come in all shapes and sizes.
However, the industry is not just for tall models. Short women and men are strongly more wanted for commercial/ film/ and television work. Even shorter women and men appear in many magazines for print work. Taller women, mainly to accentuate clothing and their longer strides tend to rule the runway for these reasons.
Unfortunately, I was thrilled and waiting to turn eighteen for this competition - only to hear that I should be four inches shorter! Hmm.. too bad? Hopefully, there is a next season! Till then :]
I think this is a interesting idea - however, knowing the buisness...I really don't see the winner will be rocking the runway anytime soon.

I am stoked!! I can not express how grateful and excited I am to be given the opportunity on such a great forefront to be "discovered". I am very short and full of character but for some reason have had issues in the past even obtaining representation for "print" work seeing as how they still want people who are 5'7". It's quite entertaining to have people tell you how unique and beautiful you are and that if you were taller you would be the perfect model etc. etc. etc. Now, it's our turn. Also, for the young lady that seems to think us shorties have everything.. hun, I beg to differ; NO ONE gets everything.. the grass is always greener on the other side and you never know what kind of grass you have until you have to tend to it daily.. darlin' being short is not easy just as being tall may not be so easy but we should all be allotted the same opportunities. Good luck to everyone that will be auditioning and if in NY, see you there!
