Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said he always trusted that a black man one day would be elected president of the United States.

‘I knew this day would come,’ Powell said during an interview on CNN. He said the inauguration of Barack Obama was a long way from the days of the Jim Crow South, when Powell could not get a hamburger in a diner because of the color of his skin.

Powell, a Republican who drew criticism from some of his fellow conservatives when he endorsed Obama during the presidential race instead of Republican candidate John McCain, said the inauguration of Obama ‘is a momentous occasion for all of us’ but particularly for African Americans.

He also said that Obama would ‘reach out to all America’ and be a unifying force.
