'The Hills': Making up isn't easy

September 9, 2008 | 10:22 am

LaurenFor one thing, it does a number on your mascara.

But, I guess it had to happen. During last night's episode of "The Hills," Audrina, so strong up until now this season, caved. Even when she has more than once wisely observed that some friends just grow apart. And the fact of the matter is, she and Lauren have different lives and different interests.

But Audrina didn't hear Lauren vent about her to the boys and girls in Las Vegas. Although, and to Lauren's credit, it seemed that being shut out of Audrina's life, however unappealing, was getting to her.

Not much more to say about it. When they finally talked, Lauren got worked up over how much effort she was putting into their flailing friendship. Audrina, left semi-speechless, agreed to wipe the slate clean. The two hugged, said sorry ... and failed to mention the real cause of the problem: Lo. Expect that tension to resurface more than once before the season's out. If memory of the Season 4 trailer serves, I recall more conversation between Audrina and Justin Bobby (who I full-on adore now) about her moving out.

You know what would be super awesome? If MTV did like a "Lost"-style flashback to show us exactly what happened to Justin Bobby that inspired him to cut the hair, lose the burping and begin treating Audrina right. Who's with me?

On the flip side, it was super lame of MTV to hype Brody, Lauren's loyal puppy dog, and her ex-Doug going to jail during Sunday's pre-VMA episode. The pair got punched in Vegas (probably for good reason) and spent five hours trying to bring down the heroes guys that did it before taking their private jet back to L.A. Nice.

Now, if Lauren or Heidi or Spencer went to jail, that's something I might care about.

Speaking of the terrible twosome, does anyone else feel like this season Spencer and Heidi's story is even more ficticious than their "breakup" last season was? Doesn't it seem like Spencer getting his panties in a bunch because of Heidi's sister Holly, who has been entirely harmless up until now, is entirely for show? Holly hasn't even had that many lines yet. And Heidi and Spencer are already arguing about it nonstop? More phony and, more important, more tiresome than ever. (As far as I'm concerned, they only matter when my favorite drama queen, Stephanie, is in the room.)

Holly's future purpose? MTV's doing its darnedest to play up a future reunion between sides: Lauren telling Stephanie that seeing Holly (in a future episode) makes her miss Heidi; Heidi saying something similar. Could there be a truce in the works? The two still aren't talking as far as the tabloids have shown ...

Awwww, Denise! If this had been Gossip Girl, you would be running to the nearest pet store, looking for miniature doggies to carry in your newly purchased handbag! The constant belittleing of The Hills and the parallel over the top promotion of Gossip Girl is what's getting tiresome. You loose either way. If this show was real, then we would be on the inside of these young people's lives, making it much more consequential than GG. If it were fake, then last night had some of the most natural acting I've seen, subsequently putting the acting skills of GG to bed! Ya can't win kiddo!
