On one of the biggest live stages that these groups have ever had (most likely), Kaba Modern faced off against Fanny Pak for the honor of presenting an MTV video music award. The circular stage on the Paramount lot was reminiscent of the circular ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ stage, but it was probably no comfort to the performers.

Kaba Modern started off. Fluid movements to Chris Brown’s ‘Closer’ with cool clothes and narrow-brimmed hats, the dancers slid deftly across the stage, reminding many why they gave JabbaWockeeZ a run for its money. They kept to their style and didn’t try to do anything ... too new. Not much in the way of tricks, and for those who’ve watched this season and last, there wasn’t a whole lot overly exciting. It didn’t have the theatricality of Fanny Pak. With Glenda coming out in a wedding dress, the Fanny Pak kids’ moves were big, sharp and conveyed a message. Costumes, quirky moves and having just come off a season where it (at the end) was favored to go a bit farther than it did, Fanny Pak finally got the big win it deserved.

For about 45 seconds of airtime. The VMAs allowed the crew to come down and stand next to Lindsay Lohan and Ciara, but after the nominees were announced and the camera cut back to the presenters, Fanny Pak had been shuffled off.

No fair, MTV! If that’s all you were going to do, then there was no need for the build up. It was false advertising to the fans and the groups themselves in saying that the winners would be allowed to present an award on the show if you weren’t going to let them do it.

Congratulations to Fanny Pak, though, and continued success to Kaba Modern. Tour starts Thursday after next, and we’ll look forward to it!
