With two central characters killed off in the season finale, the writers of Showtime’s ‘Dexter’ are filling in the cast gap with Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jimmy Smits. The actor most recently starred in CBS’ canceled nighttime soap ‘Cane.’

The news of Smits’ addition gives fans a small hint of what’s to come with Season 3: ‘Smits will portray Miguel Prado, an ambitious, charismatic assistant district attorney who comes from one of Miami’s most politically powerful and beloved families. Dexter will join forces with Prado –- who’s risen in the ranks due to his aggressive stance against crime –- in the pursuit of a murderer who affects both of their lives directly,’ reads the Showtime press release.

The psychotic Lila (Jaime Murray) and the determined Doakes (Erik King) were both dispensed with in the Season 2 finale. Lila knew too much about Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) serial-killing ways, and, before that, she killed Doakes to protect Dexter. (Correction appended.)

Will Smits’ Prado get too close also? Everyone does on ‘Dexter,’ eventually.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story wrongly stated that Dexter killed both Lila and Doakes.
