'Battlestar Galactica': Starbuck's new toy

10:56 AM PT, May 11 2008

The Cylon basestar is impressive, even one that was blown to smithereens.

This one shot toward the end when Athena, Starbuck, Six, et al jumped back to the Demetrius was a great visual.

Basestar

But how about the episode itself? Starbuck finally takes back the spotlight on the show as she and the crew decide to check Cylon Number 2's claims of a truce, and continue following Starbuck's hunches. Apparently even the military has its limits, though, and Helo leads an ill-fated mutiny. Gaida's leg gets blasted, and you can bet it'll be a theme of some kind later on. Will he let the Cylons help repair it, get it cut off by the doc, or be stubborn enough to die because of the injury? We'll go with a reluctant Cylon fix.

Athena's disdain for the rest of her Cylon sisters was a bit off-putting, and we hope Anders' continued undercover existence doesn't backfire. And we don't need to have Dave's top 10 reasons in front of us to know that the cryptic message given by the Hybrid just fans the frakking flames of Cylon speculation.

And the Hybrid. She's freaky. Not sci-fi acting vet Tiffany Lyndall-Knight, but the bathing beauties who run the Cylon ships. They've really never, at least to my satisfaction, been explained. And calling Starbuck the "Harbinger of Death" got me to thinking: What if the final Cylon is not only a Cylon, but also a Hybrid? A being able to home in on Earth?  Hmmm ... who could that be?

Roslin's theological encounter was touching, but it didn't seem to add much to the overall story. It may change her outlook a bit on what she believes, and on Baltar, but the mission is still the same. And now Adama's been converted? Not that it's the only reason to worship, but the stresses of life can many times heighten your awareness of and faith (episode's title) in things unseen. And what's more stressful than running from murderous robots in outer space?

And in other news ...

It is being reported that the roles of Joseph Adama and Amanda Graystone have been cast to genre actors Esai Morales of "Jericho" and Paula Malcomson of "Deadwood" for the "Caprica" two-hour TV movie.

Battlestar Galactica still pleasures the senses by it addicting storylines and unpredicable season enders. Iffy side is on average a boring and depressiing exquivalent of the original series.

Is it too much to ask of LA times bloggers that they spell the character's names correctly? You can find them on 100s of other websites, not to mention on the credits (Felix Gaeta).
