'America's Next Top Model': Dominique's got a headache, y'all

09:48 PM PT, May 7 2008

The end of the unexpectedly long line came Wednesday night for Dominique, who may be dubbed the Sanjaya of this cycle of "Top Model."  Certainly, she was striking, but not as pretty or fresh-faced as any of the other girls.  Her popularity with viewers wasn't helped by her constant talk of her self-confidence, and how other girls were threatened by her, and her referral to herself in the third person.  As she got into fights with the other girls and made countless gaffes and poor fashion choices, she somehow gave believing in yourself a bad name.  Her survival seemed to make some viewers angry, but yet, with time, she grew less annoying and more amusing, perhaps because she seemed to take things in stride -- she never seemed to get frustrated when she made a fool out of herself and she didn't seem to get upset when the judges told her to her face that she looked like a man.

At least it didn't seem like a random surprise that Dominique went home. During the challenge in which the girls photographed Paulina Porizkova (a "real model," she noted), Dominique seemed to confuse her muse with a kid being shot for a K-Mart catalog.  Then, when the girls were photographed by Nigel Barker, she came out looking like a "beautiful transvestite."  It's funny how Dominique's mannishness always brought out the best in the judges' humor.  Jay's silly "man" voice was always entertaining as well as Tyra's description of her masculine alter ego, "Tyrone."

Dominique was the most obnoxious member of the house, but two others still remain.  Whitney has been a major instigator of fights in the past, and there is something annoying about her talking about whether America is "ready" for its first plus-sized Top Model, as if she were talking about whether America is ready for a black president.  Fatima isn't as imperious as she was earlier in the show, but the only girl to make it thus far without any sort of attitude problem is Anya.  Is America ready for an easy, breezy Top Model?  We'll see.

It's a really special day when America is more ready for a "plus sized" top model than for a "transvestite" top model.
