Michael Johns: If you needed our help, why didn't you just ask?

03:33 AM PT, Apr 11 2008

Johns I was asked on Thursday, more than once, whether I thought Syesha Mercado or Carly Smithson was headed home. There was no question, in the minds of many, that one of the two would be eliminated. But that's not what happened. In the season's greatest shock thus far, it was Michael Johns, instead, who received the fewest votes this week. And he was as surprised as we were.

After a solid performance of "Dream On" on Tuesday, Michael Johns seemed a shoo-in to the next round.  When he was revealed to be in the bottom three, Randy said it was a "pretty surprising bottom three," and Paula said that America got it "partly right, partly wrong."  We knew what they meant. Then, Ryan Seacrest added insult to injury by announcing that both Carly and Syesha were safe.  The audience gasped in horror, and Carly's jaw dropped about a foot.

"I'm definitely surprised," Michael confessed after his fate was revealed.  Still, he kept it together, adding with grace, "If there's a song to go out on, that's not a bad one." And Michael wailed his way through "Dream On" like he had nothing to lose –- because finally, he did.

And so, after such a shocking ouster, an inevitable question remains: Why? Why was Michael Johns ejected from the Idoldome when he was a fixture in many "Idol" forecasters Top Three lists?  Why was Michael Johns eliminated on a week when his performance was nowhere near the worst of the evening? In other words, why him? Why now? Why ever?

All along, Michael has been a strong individual and a consistent performer.  In fact, he hasn't had a single weak moment in the time we've known him -- and that was his undoing.  America thought Michael didn't need their help.  And so they focused on the others.

Some of Michael's would-be voters lent their support to David Cook, whose high blood pressure and heart palpitations landed him in the hospital earlier this month. After David's lackluster performance on Tuesday, fans rushed to vote for him, because he needed their support. He didn't even land in the bottom three.

Syesha Mercado won the hearts -– and votes –- of "Idol" viewers everywhere during Hollywood week, when she lost her voice. Instead of speaking, Syesha communicated with handmade signs, which she displayed on camera with her accompanying frowny face.  She had us at laryngitis. After that scare, America made sure to take good care of Syesha.

Brooke White needs our votes too.  Brooke's greatness as a performer springs from her wealth of emotion, but her wealth of emotion also leaves her extremely fragile.  Just this week, Brooke got choked up about missing her sister's wedding.  Brooke needs us to vote for her; otherwise, she'll get voted off –- and cry -– a lot.  And so we watch out for her.

And what of Jason Castro? Sure, we haven't seen any tears or illnesses from him, but that doesn't mean we haven't found his weak spot. Jason revealed his handicap subtly, in an absolutely brilliant pre-performance interview.  Jason explained that on "Idol," "there's just been a lot more not-music stuff than I thought. Ya know, like taking pictures. And talking. I'm not good at talking." Once we knew that Jason was struggling with the most basic building blocks of the "Idol" competition (i.e. "taking pictures" and "talking") we knew he needed our support.

And then there was Michael Johns. There was an ease about Michael from the start. He was cool long before "Idol" stylists got their hands on him. He sounded good, and he looked even better. According to Simon, he was even a "very, very nice guy."  Unfortunately for Michael, Michael had it all.  He never lost his voice, he was never rushed to the hospital, and we never saw him cry. With stats like that, what did he need us for?  Michael seemed to be doing just fine, and so nobody fought to keep him.

Had he just shown his frailty by slipping on a strategically placed banana peel during a group number, or by totally bombing during Tuesday's performance, we would have come to his rescue.  Unfortunately for Michael, however, he didn't bomb on Tuesday. And so America clapped for Michael, their favorite cool guy, and texted in their votes for their most fragile favorite instead.

Most consistent performer? Are you kidding? MJ was consistently mediocre to good...he was never close to great save last week. NEVER. He sang like a glorified karaoke singer last night. Sure Cook faltered, but after around six strong to great performances, the guy can have an off night. Archuleta frequently forgets lyrics, but he's safe thanks to the tweeners and granny's. Carly deserves another chance too...seriously. Syesha/Brooke/Jason/KLC can go anytime they wish.

MJ never secured a fan base. This show has been going on long enough for people to know how it works. He tried to be a rocker, but Cook had that genre locked up all to himself a long time ago. He should have stuck to soul music. He has nobody to blame but himself.

We felt it was very unfair what happened to Michael Johns. We feel he was the best on American Idol every week.Carly should've left this week.We don't even feel like watching the show.We hope it's not rigged.Again Michael should have not left this week.Even Carly was surprised.

David Cook deserved to be booted out for lame performance not cool Michael Johns. It was so premature and a real shocker!

I am done watching American Idol!!! Michael Johns will go on to better things but the show is definitely a farce!

Michael had a multitude of problems. He sometimes came off as smug, he sometimes seemed too cool for the show and he too often picked the wrong song. KLC may be the worst singer left in the group but she has started picking songs that match her perfectly...next week should be interesting.

I loved your article. Very funny, but very true. I, like everyone else, was totally shocked - but then again, I didn't vote, even though he was one of my favs :(

If they would only have people vote for who they wanted to go instead of who they wanted to win this would not ever happen.

I am so sorry that Michael Johns is no longer on the show I

Michael Johns has it all: great voice, good looking and nice to boot. He sounds like a rock star and he looks like a movie star. I don't think he needs Idol as much as Idol needs him. My guess is, record producers and talent agents will be knocking one another down to be the first to sign him. I must say, on a personal note, I don't "get" Jason Castro. When he came out and performed "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" strumming a ukulele, I thought I was watching an impersonation of Tiny Tim. I felt sorry for the guy.

Wow this is really bad for me as I am 63 years old and this was the one guy I really enjoyed hearing sing.Sure hope he gets a contract with a major company soon .

Well, you are correct that David Cook's need to be saved this week stole votes from Michael. I disagree with the assertion that Michael was a contender, though. I think the judges have been unfairly biased for Michael and their efforts to praise him for mediocre performances have given the public the impression that he is better than he is. Another factor in this week's result was that David Archuleta sang a more adult-appealing song than usual and drew off some of the older voters' support.

One other point- America almost always votes off those who insist on being rockers week after week. The demographics of American Idol watchers do not include hard-core rockers.

I cant believe Michael is gone! I have to say with sadness that I will never watch this show again. Last season they did not make an elimination due to Idol gives back, Why not do it this time again??? Specially when America has made a mistake. That would have waken Michael's fan's up and make them vote next week. See ya later Idol!

Sorry, Michael Johns mayhave been a media darling, but he couldnt stay on key. Singing a great song and wailing does not make up for the inability to hit the notes. And last night, when he performed it again, he had the same problem: probably half his notes were a half-note flat. He's got presence, and he wails, and he entertains, but he is not the singer he thinks he is.

Mathematics is the solution. Just consider the average for the last 3 votes and vote the person with the lowest average.... except for the last show of course. But using the average American Idol will avoid this kind of drastic changes, peaks and people just voting base on the last song.

THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO HIM.....No waiting in line, he'll go right to the studio and start recording BIG TIME!!! I'll bet he's already had a dozen calls since last nite's show ended. Everyone with a brain in the music biz is going to want a piece of him. I hope he chooses wisely. Besides, "losers" on AI have done better than the "winners" !

You hit the nail right on the head in your summary. I thought we'd have an Aussie winning the American Idol for sure.

Yeah, he seemed like a nice guy, but there was nothing that amazing about him or his voice. Nice, but not amazing. My wife and I watched week after week hoping that he would live up to his perceived potential, but he never did -- delivering one competent karaoke after another. This is no surprise.

Honestly, who cares? theres mor eimportant things to worry about. Wake up America, were in the middle of a WAR. Now is not the time to have your head up your arse watching American Idol. Now si the time to keep watch on the mosques and madrassas poppping upin Middle America with alamrgn frequency. Nwo si the time to make sure Obama, Hilary and their Socialist agenda get defeated in November. Now is the time to make sure were not overrun with a wave of illegal immigrants. Maybe after we defeat those enemies, we can obsess about a stupid, vapid TV show.

Johns, a poor immitation of the Doors' frontman, was a one-dimensional entertainer and deserved to go. Like Cook, he makes a nice frontman but lacks the stage presence to carry a show by himself.

It's time to really press FOX to announce vote totals rather than simply tell us how many votes there. America may vote, but FOX tallies the votes. Until they actually announce numbers, the opportunity to cook the books remains.

You were right on the money as to why Michael got booted. Michael will do just fine. He has a future. Another real problem he has is, like Brooke & Jason, his style of music isn't in style. They were born 30 to 40 years too late. Of all the the contestants, the two David's voices and styles are "now" with the "brightest futures", with DC leading the pack. Carly's voice is incredible, though if you turn off the sound, she always looks angry like she's screaming at you. Michael is a lot like Bo Bice, in that if you close your eyes you think you're listening to the original artist's version. I love Michael's voice and style (and Bo's), but I'm 62. Michael needed to define himself and his style earlier in the competition, which he didn't, except as the best impersonator of the group. He has the voice, power, and range to be great, once he decides who he really is as an artist. Also, many viewers vote for who they think is best on a particular night. Maybe they should vote for the best three based on a two week average, and ask themselves who's CD would they buy?. What if Kelly or Carrie had had a bad night - It happens.

Actually you are probably quite right in your observations... I was as surprised as anyone that he had the lowest votes-- and even more surprised that he had to leave on a week that was all about giving back.... give back they did.

He'll have an album out, do tours and such, and we'll see if he could be all we thought he could be. It will work out, one way or another.

YOU DOG! LISTEN, FOR ME, THIS ARTICLE WAS TOO PITCHY AND YOU WEREN'T YOURSELF.

I blame Rany's rant against Michael after his performance on Tuesday. Some garbage about him not showing his true self... and this competition is bout singing. Kinda like his collaboration with Paula, you dig....

don't forget... you're not an american....

Care Factor?...ZERO

A.I. lost a viewer last night. Personally, I am not sure they care since it is clear THEY have picked their winner in David A. There is something disappointing about Syesha, Brooke and Kristy Lee still being there - when someone of the caliber of Michael is gone. And the heart breaking "joke" Ryan played - suggesting that, like last year, no one would be eliminated after the "America Give Back" - it was uncalled for. I'm through. Bye.

Does it ever really make a difference who gets voted off the stage and who doesn't? Time and time again we have seen America’s Next Top Idol go absolutely nowhere and their tearful friends who are voted off earlier, get hit records. None of these people will ever be "idol" status. Idols are people on the Disney Channel and steroid filled athletes. Maybe we should try and make a show where America's idols are writers or scientists or successful businessmen. Maybe the networks should think about American's Nobel Peace Prize Winner as a new show??

Michael Johns was totally amateur hour. The only reason he got as far as he did is his looks. Carly is an amazing vocalist - why should it be any shock at all that he went before her?

Michael Johns was booted off because he was forgettable, awkward, and lacked any sort of personality. Who is Michael Johns? We never learned, and I doubt there is one.

Michael be just fine without Idol. He'll go on to sell tons of CDs just like Chris Daughtry. David Archuleta has been annointed as the Chosen One and they're shoving him down our throats like bad medicine. I'll buy Michael's CD when it hits stores but David will have grandchildren while he's waiting on me to buy one.

Dream on, Michael!

We didn't vote for David Cook because he had heart palipations, we voted for him because he is the most talented singer on the show. Thats an insult to David Cook and his fans.

Get rid of Brooke Whine! Can't stand listening to her!

I was absolutely shocked that Michael Johns was eliminated at this point in the show. We all knew that there were at least 2 women and 1 guy that needed to leave before him. In the end, this may be the best thing for Michael Johns. We all know that David A is going to win. He is a huge fan favorite. So, now, Michael Johns can go home, relax, and move on with a great recording career without legal ties to American Idol. He will probably do better that way...................the problem is that major male eye candy is gone.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Michael's weakness was an inability to connect with middle-America. I think his voice was one of the strongest and clearest on the show, however I never understood why he chose to cram 6 minutes anthems into 1.5, taking on the likes of Freddie Mercury and John Lennon (We Are The Champions; A Day In The Life). And then the Idol Image makers did him a disservice by telling him ascots and scarves look good on a 20-something rocker. Ouch!
Oh, well. I thought he would last a few more rounds on the strength of his voice alone, beating Syesha Mercado and Kristy Lee Cook, but his fan base never materialized. He didn't give them something to LOVE.

Excellent recap - you captured America perfectly. I think Michael Johns will go on to bigger and better things like Chis Daughtry did... Perhaps he is too polished to carry the label of American Idol?

I am done watching IDOL. MICHAEL JOHNS was the best and is the best. Contest over he won hands down. Who cares he will be a big star and I will be the first to buy his CD.

Well good, now that the best performer is gone, I don't have to watch anymore

Not much of a surprise at all. Michael Johns is a good singer who'll have a career, but he's no American Idol. Maybe he'll be the next Jennifer Hudson and go on to prove Simon and other critics wrong, but he wasn't the right Idol for these times, American or otherwise. My first impression weeks ago was that he's too old to be embraced as this year's American Idol. In one of the pre-recorded interviews a few weeks back he mentioned that he's 30. I wondered then how he managed to make it past the age screeners. Whatever the case, his issues went beyond his voice. Let's be honest here, Michael Johns is bland, a seemingly pleasant guy, but bland. Every song he sang sounded the same. Plus, his fashion experiments just didn't add up to star appeal any more than Carly Smithson's tattoos do. The one thing that's clear this year is that the level of talent is such that any contestant can go at any time. Kristy Lee, who we thought would have made the big exit a few weeks ago, might just win this thing if she keeps improving. David Archuleta, my favorite, could be the next to go, if he makes the wrong song choice. The moral of this story... if you don't want to lose your favorite, vote!

American Idol has always been about the "rags to riches" concept. Notice how indignant people get when Idols are revealed to have had past success in the music industry? That's not what America is looking for. They're looking for people like themselves to bless with easy "overnight success". Even those with past record contracts (Carly, Kristy Lee, to name just two) have lost their contracts and so, in that sense, are still in rags. But Michael was different. Not only was he not exactly in rags before (with a semi-successful singing history) but he gave no sign of being in rags on the show. So I agree that people felt no need to take care of him, but I think also he didn't really fit the paradigm. The show is about much more than simply identifying the best singer. It's about bestowing easy success on someone who really needs the help. Johns doesn't fit.

It is simple. America could have not gotten it more wrong! Maybe this is an indication that our schools need to include more music in their curriculum, because it is clear to me the people that voted on AI this week could not recognize a talented and pure musician, because if they had, Michael Johns would be singing for us next week.

Interesting take...

It's Friday morning and believe it or not I'm still stunned.
I can't believe I even care what happened to this guy, a stranger...
But, he's not a stranger, is he. I feel some sort of connection to him,
don't you? We see a little bit of his heart every time he chooses a song,
every time he sings, even when he smiles - his sweet smile - not at all
arrogant.
America really messed up, including me, I thought he was destined for the
big finish, so I voted for Jason - stupid me...stupid all of us.

Wake up America? Get serious? There's a WAR on? How about GET REAL. This American Idol thing is escapism, pure and simple. And along the way we are treated to some mighty good music. Just leave those of us that like Idol alone. We realize the world's on fire and the wheels are coming off the machine. All we ask is a couple of hours a week to kick back and recharge. Then we'll get serious again. Thanx

I agree completely.

I might not think Michael was the best singer but he did not deserve to leave at this point. Now, I think this gives more credibility to the David Archuleta Beatles fiasco plot. I mean, there are rumors he purpously fumbled his beatles song so his fans would rush out and support him.

Plot or no, he demonstarted vulnerability and thus made sure his fans would support him.

I think the folks who run Idol have the voting concept backwards. Since the end result of each week is to eliminate one competitor, instead of voting for our favorite, we should be voting for the one who did the poorest and we thinkg should be eliminated. That would stop this situation of thinking our favorite is safe so we should vote for our second favorite so they won't get eliminated. I think we would get much better results that way. You may recall that the same thing happened in last season's dancing with the stars where the clearly best dancer (that Cheetah girl) got eliminated early.

I am so heartbroken with the show this week, Ryan has gone way too indecent to make such joke or statement on other's open wound. Anyway I would agree with Paula that Michael Johns can stop wasting time on the American Idol stage and make beautiful music for us. I recall the same shock and disappointment with Chris Daughtry left the competition and look where he is now. American Idol is simply a mean to the end so those with talents to show off and be found. Simple as that.

Stephanie,

I think you're glossing over a few facts. Michael Johns wasn't a hit every week. Not everyone liked him. Even this week, Simon didn't speak highly of his performance.

He's not the best vocalist for this competition. He excels in some areas but not in others.

I didn't vote for him this time because I didn't care if he went home.

If he makes an album of bluesy rock songs (as showcased during Dolly week), I'll strongly consider buying it (that is, listen to it on iTunes/Amazon then buy the disc somewhere if I like what I preview).

His ascot doesn't make him cool. It makes him look like Fred on Scooby Doo. Or the perception may have been that it's an Austrailian thing. It made him look less American when his accent and transpanted-ness were barriers to some voters (as is the case with Carly). It made him stand out, but not in the right way--for this competition.

He's good. If he works hard enough and gets the right people around him, he'll do well. He just needs to make sure no one forgets who he is between now and three months after the show ends (when he's eligible to sign a contract w/ someone else). Plus, he'll be on the tour.

Further, I don't think that everyone voted for David Cook because he went to the hospital. He gave 3 really kick-ass performances (before this week's cruddy one).

I totally forgot about Syesha's brush with vocal illness. That didn't make me feel sympathy for her now. I like her now because she tries hard, does nicely and though song choices are weak, they're still mildy pleasant. That said, I expected her to go.

I didn't vote for Brooke. Her performance this week and the past couple of weeks was pretty lack-luster. I don't care that she cries--it's fine to have emotion. That's who she is and she's expressing herself. It doesn't make me vote for her or not vote for her.

If people are voting for Jason Castro, it's not because there's sympathy for his lack of verbal skill. It's more likely that it's because he's attractive and nice. Laid-back. He sings pleasantly and his song choices still seem like him though they fit the catagory of the night.

I noticed you glossed over David Archuleta and Kristy Lee Cook in your article. They don't hold up to your theory either. Is that why you didn't include them?

Sympathy is not the factor for vote tallies. It's whether people connect. That's why Kristy Lee Cook has weathered her poor performances. That's why Brooke White is still around. It's one reason why Carly (and her tattoos) are so often not voted for.

Michael Johns didn't connect to the voters and that's why he went home.

WHO CARES! AS OF THIS WEEK AND AI'S WEDNESDAY NIGHT EXTRAVAGANZA OF SUPPORT FOR NO ONE BUT BLACK PEOPLE I NO LONGER WILL WATCH AI. IT IS A FRAUD AND DISGUSTING. THEY WILL NOT GET $1 FROM ME EVER. DO THEY NOT REALIZE THAT THERE ARE AS MANY POOR WHITE CHILDREN WHO ARE SICK AND COULD USE MEDICAL ATTENTION. SICKENING!

Uh, definitely a shocker, but the premise of the article is just plain wrong. I think he lost the ability to connect, and then was arrogant in his response to criticism. Or maybe the combination of people voting for the best, their favorites, in addition to the idiots intentionally voting for the worst added up to some weird math.

Good call America. this guy was a karaoke singer at best.....the way Paula swooned over him was par tof America's brainwashing that he was good. Without a doubt Carly is the best SINGER in the competition, maybe not the best stage presence or the best look, but the best singer. Thank you America for getting this guy off before it got down to a popularity contest instead of a singing competition....oh, and Brooke is so gorgeous that hopefully she'll be around for a while!

The vocal performances are all lip synched, so Johns didn't "rock" out his last song, they just played it louder...

Thank you! Finally an insightful analysis! It had nothing to do with song choice or pitch problems or any other rational explanation... it's simple the voting system. He wasn't the best and (certainly) wasn't the worst, and voters didn't feel the need to rush to his aid to save him the way they did for those in obvious jeopardy. Why don't they collect votes for who should be kicked off each week instead?

What is even worse than Michael getting voted off is the way Ryan told him that last year they did not elimate anyone during the giveaway show. Then hit him with the statement, but you are going home. Made me sick.......I thought to myself....before we knew the outcome...thank heavens he will get to stay. I liked him, Cook, and White. They should bring him back immediately for the way Ryan talked to him. We thought he was safe, I guess. He was the only reason i could not wait to watch. I also like Brooke, she is so real. I hope he get a great record deal very soon. Good luck Michael!!!!

America you definitely got it all wrong!! Micheal Johns was considerably better than the remaining Idols. We need to do something in order for this not to happen again. If we are not careful, David Cook will be the next to be eliminated, and David A. will still be going strong. I for one, do not want this to happen. Golden Boy, David A. does not deserve to win.

I agree with Jim that Michael Johns just didn't connect with viewers/voters, and he's right that Carly doesn't either. KLC, for all she lacks in talent, connects with the audience at home even if Simon doesn't think she does with him. Her face is gorgeous, her voice is pleasant enough, and her song choices of late were stellar. I predict a top 5 finish for her.

To O.VESTAL, I say you have missed most of what was going on, and your rant had seriously racist overtones. First did you miss out on the bit with Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus going to Kentucky? There were some Caucasians for you, and their plight was as bad if not worse than many others.

Here's my prediction for how it goes from here on in:
7: Syesha (she'll try to compete with Mariah and she'll blow it)
6. Jason
5. KLC
4. Brooke
3. David C (they haven't had two guys in the finals since season 2; won't happen again)
2. Carly
1. David A

Was never excited about MJ - but you don't look to who sang this week, but who got voted off last week to try to figure out who's going home. Ramiele had the whole youthful, adorable quotient, so once she's off, where do her votes go? To the other youthful, adorable, perky, perhaps slightly cloying contestants - Kristy, David A, even Jason and maybe even Brooke. That boosts their vote totals and pits the rocker/blues/belters against each other and the only one of them who is clearly safe was David C.
So.....next week? Who gets MJs votes?

What about the smarmy comment Ryan Seacrest invoked that last year on "Idol Gives Back," someone was spared, but not tonight!! How crude, rude, and arrogant! Frankly, Michael Johns is the only candidate who had what Simon always calls "IT"--handsome, good singer, respectful and intellilgent enough to speak in multi-syllables. I'll put money on the fact that he's the only one who eventually we'll be talking about as a respectful performer after this group is gone.

My mouth is still open!!! Why did Ryan say what he did about no one going home? I wonder if that was ad-lib or scripted, what was the point? I agree that most people felt that he didn't need our help, I voted for people that I felt were talented, but I was afraid didn't "play the game" well enough to have enough people voting for them. I know that this sounds terrible, but after this happened I didn't want to pick up the phone and "donate", where as I had every intention of doing so.

Your analysis of the "fragile ones" is quite interesting, but I wonder, what do you make of Kristy Lee Cook? How in the world is she still on this show? She was in the danger zone before they even moved to the Idoldome! And suddenly she's no longer even in the bottom three. I am continually stunned at her staying power and cannot understand what her voters see in her. The week she pathetically pandered by singing "Proud to be an American" should have certainly been her last - what a disgusting move to use showbiz patriotism to advance herself in a singing competition, when our soldiers are dying overseas and their families are mourning in real life. Why can't America see through her? I do not understand her teflon coating at all.

to christopher,
Re: Jason Castro - The version of "Over the Rainbow" that he did was originally done by Brother Iz from Hawaii, it is a classic. You should know your music before you make such statements.

Have we ever had a MARRIED American Idol? I don't think so. I wonder if Michael Johns and Chris Daughtry did not go further because of their marital status? Not like any of the fans have a chance with the winners, anyway, but do you think all of these young girls would be voting for David Archuleta if he were married? I don't think Brooke or Carly will make it all the way either. Just a theory....

I can't believe that Michael Johns was booted!!!!!I I was in total shock......he didnt deserve to be let go at all in my book......what happened America? Or better yet what happened Ryan? I didnt really like the way you went about letting Michael know he was the one to go. It was very disgraceful in my book. So, all I can say is so-long American Idol. It sucks, and It broke my heart to see Michael go!!!!!!

I am still in shock!!!! Michael did not derserve to go now or ever.
It definately should have been Carly in my book.
What happened!!!!!! Or better yet, what happened Ryan? You should not have voted one off after Idol gives back......I'm still shaking my head.......disgusting!

I was very surprised by Michael's departure. So surprised, in fact, that I thought maybe the show isn't really rigged. He seems like a great guy with a good voice. Carly has a great voice and doesn't deserve the bottom three. When will Brooke with her mediocre voice and whiny, interrupting nature go? The crime here is that Michael left before Brooke or KLC.

I was in total shock that Ryan would make the comment he did regarding not eliminating someone last year on Idol Gives Back Night but that Michael was going home. My husband constantly says he is a smartie but I take up for him because I like him; however, I really think he went too far this time. I have a theory - I think the producers do not want someone Michael's age winning - they want someone much younger - look what happened with Taylor Hicks year before last - He was wildly popular but yet they did not put his cd out until December, months after Idol season had ended. American Idol didn't know what to do with him, so they did nothing long enough that he did not sell enough copies to have his contract renewed - In order to get established these new stars have got to be kept in the public's eye - we are very fickle you know.

I know my music and Jason Castro's "Over the Rainbow" STILL sounds like Tiny Tim.

It will never happen, but Idol's voting process will always be flawed until they switch from "Vote for the winner" to "Vote for the loser." Identifying the one person to go home each week would produce far more accurate results than voting for the 10 to stay. It won't happen because Fox wouldn't want all the fans to think negatively to evaluate the worst instead of the best, but the current system will continue to eliminate contestants that have no business going home this early.

i think micheal was the only person capable of winning this show..and now nothing has remained..i thought till the end that it would again be a joke, like the previous year..still waiting to hear from ryan that he is bluffing..and that micheal is safe..but it didnt happen till the end..my point is that if such contestants keep on eliminated shockingly..then the show always lack interest, like what happend today..im really dejected..

WHO CARES REALLY? THIS HAS BEEN THE WORST YEAR THAT IDOL HAS HAD
AND THEY KEEP SAYING ITS THEIR BEST EVERYBODY JUST STOP WATCHING FOR TWO WEEKS AND WATCH WHAT HAPPENS

I agree with you..I was hoping that Carly or david cook wouldn't go and completely 'forgot' to worry about Michael Johns..(though i did vote for him as he is my favourite idol replacing Castro)

I never really liked Michael Johns as a singer. His stage presence is great, but he doesn't have the best voice. American Idol is a singing competition--we're looking for voices that sell CDs.

Why is everyone ga-ga over David Archuleta? He is so underwhelming! His voice is so nasally. I wouldn't be so suprised if his whole nice demeanor is a put-on. Everything about this kid is so contrived!

American Idol? Not in the America I want to believe in. Nor any more the show I want to watch. Whomever is voting must have virtually no knowledge of musicianship or showmanship. I can't wait to buy the first CD Micheal and his contractors release.

Is American Idol a talent competition or is it a popularity contest? How can David A. be destined to win American Idol after he even forgot the lyrics to his song? He can't sing upbeat songs and his interviews suck. He seems fake and just plain weird with his constant squinting. I'm tired of hearing the fact that he's young as an excuse. You either got it or you don't and he does not have that special star quality. The only reason David A. is at the top of the polls is because all these teeny boppers have nothing better to do but go text crazy for him. David Cook is not only the most talented but he's the most unique contestant American Idol has ever had.

I was dumbfounded that MJ was booted...he was the best in our opinion and we are so sorry to see him leave. Hopefully, there will be record deals waiting in the sidelines for him immediately. Great job Michael. You should be so very proud of yourself and we will wait impatiently for your CD to come out so we can run and buy it. You will do fine and have the admiration and support of many, many people that have watched you adoringly. Best of luck to you and your family.

Michael Johns is too sexy to go off!!! I wish I could hear that adorable accent. I wish I can hear him sing in words of love. I wish I can marry and move to Australia with him. I've been crazy over him all day. He's so hot

Michael was my pick for AL. I know several people who voted for the whole 2 hours just for him, so I have bad feelings why he left. I think he was the whole package. I don't care for David A or David C not my cup of tea. If Michael gets the right connections and the right songs he will come out on top. Winning AL seems to be no big deal as we have seen from the pass ones who did not win and went on to do well. I wish him the best and I hope that he goes on proves to those who wanted him off they made a mistake.

Your argument has one fatal flaw . . . Being in the bottom three signaled to us Michael needed our help. If the producers of AI wanted to keep him they would have saved him this week. They had the tools to do so. THEY chose to let him go.

I was shocked to see Michael Johns leave so soon when I know there are others who really need to exit before Johns does. I think the author got the answer right, however, as to why he is gone: his fans just didn't vote enough. That's part of what's wrong with the show. Who are the ones who are more likely to text message over and over and camp out on the phone? Teenagers - not adults. But it doesn't matter in the end. We've already seen that you don't have to win Idol to be successful and that the winner of AI doesn't necessarily have guaranteed success.

FYI in response to some other comments, Johns has already had a record deal when he was with a band called The Rising. Their song "Cradle" was played on the radio and was very popular. The band split, the record deal dropped. So I don't know that another label will rush to his side. Personally, I think he's a great singer and songwriter and should have a record deal and successful career. So here's hoping he does because I'd love to buy his music.

sorry,
all you losers, we really lost a good talent, keep, voting for cute, and a big????????

what left, are lousy, i will never watch the show again , voting system is poor, should be one phone one vote.

All of the finalists on American Idol are talented people - and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. Simon Cowell's critique style and the way the finalists learn that they have been eliminated fall way short of appropriate treatment.

Micheal Johns was one of my family's very favorites. The way he was treated on the elimination show last night was unconscionable.

The golden rule should be followed in all walks of life. For those of thus who are still trying to follow it, it is very difficult to watch A.I. at times.

i really loved him...great voice, personality...really too bad that he is gone. i totally love love love david archuleta and whoever said that he only gets the teen and granny votes is retarted. he is a great singer with a beautiful voice.

Heck,

Why is anyone surprised?
Most of middle class American associates an American Idol as a blond white woman.
How else would Kristi Lee Cooke and Brook White continue to be on the show?
Neither of them has a good voice or performed consistenly. Oh, but they do represent the average american; obnoxious, arrogant and little talent...

Hey Gordon,

Blonde white women like Jordin, Fantasia and Reuban. Yeah that Reuban looks hawt in a bikini w/ his milky white skin and long blond hair. Ohh he is sooooo pretty.

I am so sad to see Michael go......I wanted to see more of him for sure. Tho I don't think he was the most talented, he was in the top 3 in my opinion. I loved him....he has a strong beautiful voice and he is one of the sexiest performers I've ever seen anywhere in my long life. I do wish he took Randy's advice and stick to the bluesy stuff, but maybe that's not what gives him satisfaction. He has charisma and a wonderful grounded presence. Maybe Dolly WILL write some songs for him and we will have a chance to enjoy him some more along the way.

So long Michael. Now we get Tiny Tim, the crybaby, tattoo lady, and David Cook. Well 1 outa four ain't bad. Archuletta will coast to victory leaving Seyesha in the dust. There is no more intrigue left for this season of Idol, unless you want to guess how many gallons of tears Brook will shed when she sings her next song. Out!

VOTE COUNTING SYSTEM

Just a FYI for those annoyed with how people vote on AI. After all is said and done, the show is a BUSINESS. Having people vote for their fav contestant means everyone votes everyweek, they get a big fan base for all the idols and makes lots and lots of money. If they told people to vote for who they wanted OFF... well take a good guess... bye bye profit margins.

Michael was robbed according to Wikipedia which cites fans unable to get through to his busy voting line. No wonder he dropped off the chart from 3rd position in the polls. He seems to be doing well for himself anyway... and Idol's got the worst ratings in over 5 years.

THE SHOW IS FIXED IF JASON CASTRO WINS!! SIMON IS SO "easy" ON HIM. HE IS NOT A SINGER. HE SHOULD NOT BE UP THERE WITH THE REST OF THE REAL TALENTS!

American Idol has a lot of talent this year. Everyone except Jason Castro deserves a record deal. Can someone please tell me why Castro is still on the show? What do people see and hear in him? His singing is cabaret as Simon would put it. Simon loves him, but why? I am a very musically inclined person but cannot for the life of me understand why he's still there. Can all the teeny-boppers please stop voting for him because he's cute. This is a singing competition and alot of people are being sent home that do not deserve to be.

Micheal johns was the best singer, its really shocking he was kicked out, Micheal and David archuletta, were going to be among the top three, i thought, but now its all different, so what do i say, ''YOU NEVER KNOW WHATS GONNA HAPPEN NEXT''

I have no idea what the first commenter is on, but your article is perceptive, articulate, and right on the money. I completely agree. But perhaps this whole thing can be to his advantage... where he can use all this publicity to his favor.

Regardless, I'll be looking forward to his new CD. Just like "Sugar Crisp" ... I can't get enough of Michael Johns.

Michael Johns is my faverit. The resone he is know longer on the show is for a lack of Votes. I agree with the person above. Vote them of not on. I will probly wash the show but,
this a bet of proof that the show is all about money, and will be its down fall.
Vary distastfall.

I'm sure that MICHAEL JOHNS should have made it to the finals, at least.
HE'S A STAR WAITING TO HAPPEN.....Did you hear HOLLYWOOD!!!!!
MICHAEL JOHNS IS A STAR!!!
