‘Gossip Girl’ gone wild

Spotted: CW’s racy new “Gossip Girl” ads to promote new episodes airing on April 21.

Some, such as TMZ, think it’s a desperate ploy for ratings, while others scoff that the images and the slogan may be too inappropriate for the show’s young viewers (don’t they know that most of the show’s fans are, ahem, way beyond legal?).

Despite all the attention the show, its absurdly good-looking cast and the fabulous fashions have gotten, the ratings haven’t been stellar. So what sells a show centered on the sordid shenanigans of beautiful, rich teenagers better? The shots used in ads aren’t new — the one in the TMZ image was taken from a flashback in the pilot episode where the champers-wielding Serena van der Woodsen (played by Blake Lively) gets frisky with her best friend’s boyfriend, Nate Archibald (played by Chace Crawford). Another ad features a shot of Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester) liplocked with Chuck Bass (played by Ed Westwick) in that infamous limo scene.

The real question is whether the ads hold a clue about upcoming episodes. Will Serena dump current love Dan Humphreys and return to Nate’s arms? Will Chuck and Blair defy Upper East Side society’s judgments and make it work? Or is it all really one big tease to get people to tune in? We’ll have to wait and see on April 21.

Oh and by the way, I’m your new Show Tracker for “Gossip Girl.” You know you’ll love me.
