'American Idol': The last dance of Kristy Lee Cook
A persistent theme of this column has been the subtle and shameless brilliance of the staging of "American Idol’s" results nights. As previously noted, perhaps unique among primetime shows, "Idol" is helmed by two trained dancers, executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick. Each week this pair, with Lythgoe blocking the scene, manage to turn the most minute of tasks –- revealing the eliminee’s name -- into an intricate and never-predictable ballet, making the second non-performance night of "Idol" a Goliath of entertainment in its own right.
Wednesday night in the Idoldome, the faithful gathered to behead another once-mighty contestant. In this case, the producers were charged with finding how to string out the just-slightly-surprising but in-no-way-shocking news that the journey has ended for country girl Kristy Lee Cook into an hour of suspense and high drama. The extra-special complexity of this task lies in the fact that seven seasons and nearly a hundred results shows in, there would not seem to be a single variation on the staging themes that have not been tried. In the reporters row of the Idoldome, the cynical punditry nods knowingly as we see the order in which they are seated on the couch or set to emerge from backstage, deciphering easily, “If X is the last one to go out, that is because they think we will think it is Y so to turn it around it must be Z.” But week after week, every time we think we have gotten one step ahead of the dance, a new element that we somehow miss is thrown in to flummox us completely.
For the beheading of Kristy Lee Cook, producer Lythgoe outdid himself in creating a twist unforeseen by all. If you will bear with me then, I would like to deconstruct, piece by piece, the levels of understanding, manipulation and theatrics it took to create what turned out to be a night of high drama built out of the roughest of material.
The format: This season has made use of the two-tiered death couch and the couch vs. stool paradigm. The two groups standing on opposite ends of the stage scenario made its first appearance Wednesday night; its advantage being that by creating two unlabeled groups, Lythgoe was able to create some ambiguity about which is the highest versus the lowest, on a night when the bottom three were very predictable.
First up, Jason Castro: The singer most clearly on the bubble between could-be-safe and could-be-doomed. By bringing Jason out first, Lythgoe was able to let the uncertainty about which group is which linger just a bit longer.
David Cook: Lythgoe had two fixed positions in the public consciousness to deal with -– the audience’s justified certainty that David Archuleta and David Cook would not be meeting their ends on this night. Thus, by anchoring one group with Cook, he signaled that this would be the safe group, thus indicating that Jason Castro had fallen in the bottom three.
Carly Smithson: Also sat on the bubble tonight and thus her placement with Castro came as a mild, but comprehensible shock.
Kristy Lee Cook: The night’s most interesting maneuver. While she was in fact doomed, Lythgoe was aware that the public perception was she was on the upswing. By grouping her with David Cook, he created a very plausible safe group, saving the reveal of her fate until the end of the night.
Syesha Mercado: Perceived as highly in danger and thus sealing the perceived fate of the Castro/Carly cluster. By placing her with that group -– however deceptively -– Lythgoe let the audience live the hour and sit through Mariah mulling what we thought was a much more interesting bottom three than the actual predictable truth. And notice that he did all this, created this perception without ever lying, without ever saying "this is your bottom three." All Angel of Death Seacrest said was, "I’d like you to stand together."
Also, it should be mentioned that while most of the candidates, Carly and Jason in particular, seemed to take their possible fates in stride or at least with gallows humor, laughing, eye rolling and chatting, Syesha throughout the night looked like she was moments away from throwing up.
Brooke White: Now that it seemed the bottom three was complete, the positioning of Brooke, who otherwise would have been expected to be in the bottom, in the safe group, came as a mild surprise.
David Archuleta: To attempt to ring drama out of The Chosen One’s fate would have been a futile task so Lythgoe saved him for the “pick your group” saw, which the poor, harried young superstar handled with endearing grace, but just after…
The Switcheroo: Yes, on some level completely unfair, but all is truly fair in entertainment, just so long as the show stays true to its internal logic and does not actually lie. As mentioned above, the top/bottom groupings were all a matter of perception, of how the audience thinks it has got Lythgoe’s number and seen through his tricks. But once again, the lord of the dance has thrown in a previously unknown backstep and left us spinning.
At the end of all this, however, Angel of Death Seacrest swooped down on a young woman who has had a remarkable journey this season. In the few brief chats I’ve had with her, Kristy Lee seemed the most good-natured and warm of contestants. After emerging from the auditions as a pre-season favorite, she quickly struggled to stand out in this season of super-talents. One of the most painful things to watch on the show is when a contestant falls into the Haley Scarnato tailspin -– stepping forward to be hammered week after week by the judges, barely scraping by but becoming embittered and losing their confidence in the process. Thankfully, after becoming so embittered that she seemed to be openly wishing for the end to come, Kristy Lee found her voice and pulled herself out of that cycle in her time -– actually turning in a pair of very decent performances preceded by one incredibly shameless but brilliant maneuver. All we can wish for for these young people is that having come this far, before they taste Seacrest’s cold embrace, they have at least one happy moment on the "Idol" stage, one moment they can treasure around the hearth in cold, rainy Decembers to come. And Kristy Lee Cook in the end earned herself a fair share of those memories.

Richard...nice article...you're growing on me! I was a nervous wreck for David...I've seen him plenty of times (personally) when someone says something to him that might make him uncomfortable or nervous, to kind of not know exactly what to do...but I had faith that he would not go over to one of the "groups"...kind of!?
Anyway...nice job on the article! Go Big "D"...

Well said.

I can't believe you not only appreciated the idiotic and labored elimination technique, but also hailed it as brilliant.
They created two groups, then via the switcheroo, essentially said those groups were meaningless. Did they fool people into picking a "wrong" bottom 3? Yes, because they lied about the groupings. If as you say the producers' only goal is to stay one step ahead of the viewer's guesswork, that is not difficult, especially if you're going to be underhanded in the execution.
It's just another way of stretching a five minute show into 60.

You took the wrong person off, she had a great voice and was robb

Perfectly summed up, without the vitriol of other commentators. Straight up, spot on and wry.

Dritches..... try producing a show like Idol one week and let's see how easy it is for you. Get a life. I was sad to see Kristy Lee go as well. She'll do something in country music, no doubt.

I envision a GODFATHER-like scenario in which that jerk who won't sell Kristy Lee's horse back to her gets a visit from Luca Brasi and Pete Clemenza.

I'm a biggest fan of David Archuleta. He is my favorite and I hope

I love you Daviddddddddddddd A!!
He must win!!!

I think that everyone of the the last 12 people left on American Idol, are all winners. I admire them so much. And thanks to American Idol they have their chance to shine and live out their dream, even if it is for just a short time.

Good choice. She wasn't that great. She'll get a contract though. She proved that when she "accidently" told Simon earlier on in the season; "I'll' blow your socks off". Oh, yeah....she's get some sort of contract.

Idol is a joke. If you really think that "America" controls who stays and who goes home, I've got some swamp land in Florida to sell you. The Producers manipulate the results.
The Fix is ON people - wake up!

Until last week I thought she was done but with that last song forever I'm very shocked she was voted off. She had just become one of my favorite contestants!!! Shoot I'm goin to buy that song right now.
David Cook should win though...but I really like Syesha too plus she's the best lookin girl since Carrie Underwood to be on AI

KRISTY LEE HAS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. SHE'S SMART, GOOD LOOKING, AND CAN REALLY SING. SHE WILL BE ON THE IDOL TOUR THIS SUMMER, AND BY THEN SHE WILL HAVE SIGNED WITH A MAJOR RECORDING STUDIO. LOOK HOWM WELL KELL YPICKLER HAS DONE. THERE IS LIFE AFTER IDOL, AND KRISTY DESERVES THE BEST. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT SHE IS GOING TO BE BIG. AND I HOPE SHE GETS HER HORSE BACK. BEST WISHES.

Wow, I've been reading your column the last several weeks and have concluded that this must be your first season watching the show. I've seen last night's "swichtaroo" done before, like two or three seasons ago. Every week your article reeks of naivete. Sorry, just an observation.
Posted by: Brandon | April 17, 2008 at 01:16 PM
Jason Castro is terrible and should have been gone weeks ago...and then Krisy Lee...
Posted by: AT | April 17, 2008 at 01:17 PM
I'll say it again: for someone that you considered "the most good-natured and warm of contestants", she did not come across that way. She came across as smug, conceited, arrogant, and like she deserves whatever luck she stumbles into. I cannot look at her smug face without wanting to smack it. And her recent interview with E! does absolutely nothing to dispel the notion.
I will not miss her, and I'm glad she's gone.

I Love all the kids on the show ,yes some are better than others ,but could I stand in front of millions under that pressure ,uhhh NO.I say a big HOORAH to you all and wish you ALL the very best.

Great article. How about the pathetic looks of
Brooke White? She interrupts each judge as they critique her whether its good/bad/indifferent. And last night she actually talked back to Simon who no matter how arrogant is usually right on the money with his judging. Go home Brooke.

Well, folks sure get all in arms about this show. I never saw a season until this year when it gradually drew me in. I have to say that I liked Kristy okay, thought she had a decent enough voice if not particularly unique. We knew she would not win, but she had been improving, especially in her last few performances. I can't speak for her personally as I have not met her nor paid much attention to her to be quite frank in any of her interviews (Jason has always been my fav). I wish all the contestants of the final 10 the best of luck in their future endeavours.

It didn't look like Simon appreciated her "humor" when she called him a "butt" on national TV. I agree that she did a great job the past couple of weeks, but as a Nashville native, I seriously doubt she has a chance here. Pretty as she is, she just can't sing like Carrie Underwood, LeAnn Rimes or even Reba. And even if she could, the attitude we saw on camera would not get her in any doors here. Even if she is willing to "blow someone's socks off"! Plus, she's already had a failed record contract here!

Ironically, reading your column felt like experiencing a dance of well chosen words, graceful editing, surprising and intriguing ideas to savour in one's mind. Thank you Rushfield. You greatly enhanced my appreication for Lythgow and Warwick's artistry. For I too am a dancer!

Guys: They're all good at this point. We're going to have this kind of dialog from here on.
My heart went straight to my throat, though, when Seacrest sent David Cook to the left last night (sans bottom three stools). And then when Kristy and Brooke were also sent over there, I thought for sure that was the "going home" side. You never know - Micheal Johns? Who'd a thought. Anyway, we're down to six. I think Brooke, Carly and Syesha will all go, and the final three will be Jason, David C. and David A. Jason, because he is popular although less talented then the remaining ladies, yet it will be an all guy top three in my opinion. Then, will see the two Davids battle it out.

The article was well written, thank you. I was happy with the result, because her departure was long overdue ever since the first Beatles song performance. It was just total disaster. Having said that, she came across nice on the screen as a person, and it was kind of sad to lose a member of the "family". This is what I love about American Idol instead of the equivant "X factor" in the UK...AI creates a family almost, and it is so good to watch. I don't know who will go next week.....but the guys are definitely doing better than the girls. I would love to see a guy and a girl in the final though, but it seems unlikely
Posted by: Sandietta | April 18, 2008 at 12:04 AM
It's still boy-girl-boy-girl elimination. I think we're all dreaming if we believe that the show is going any way but that way. A guy next week, than a girl the wek after that. America doesn't vote like that, but Idol eliminates by alternating gender. The results are rigged by the producers.

kristy should have been booted out weeks and weeks ago - but i guess it shows america's real taste ;) this is the country that produced jessica simpson, after all! ;)

With beauty, dignity, and grace, last night a true star left American Idol. Kristy Lee was one of the real stars on American Idol season 7. And I believe that she will have a successful recording career and her fans will have the opportunity to see and hear her again. At this level, each singer is talented and skilled; however, some have more market potential than others. Kristy Lee has great market potential in the world of fashion, media and recording. I wish her the best of luck and would love to see that face on the cover of a major magazine. She was one of my favorite on season 7 of American Idol, and I will be waiting for her first CD. I will download her songs from iTunes or wherever I find them. She will be missed and I most likely will not vote again unless I vote in the finals if David A. is still there.

I can not stand the song and dance they play during the elimination show. It's annoying and if that is what the producers want us to feel than I guess it's working. Between Mariah's extremely long boring song and the drawn out elimination, I had a hard time staying awake. All you need to watch is the last 5 minutes. The rest of the show is filler and not very interesting filler at that.
Posted by: Lisa | April 18, 2008 at 07:16 AM
The contestants are people with feelings not robots. I can't stand all the shenanigans that you call brilliant just for the sake of "entertainment". Why torment these young people? David Archuleta is just a kid. The producers are going to give him an ulcer.
Posted by: PJC | April 18, 2008 at 12:26 PM
I think its disgusting the way the show toys with these aspirating singers by belaboring who gets eliminated. Tell whoever it is goodbye - you are cut and grant them their last sing but don't further humiliate them with these nonsensical drama. Absolutely disgusting. You ask what is wrong in America - its because we have shows like these that manipulate and denigrate people who are trying to achieve their dreams and make it a game out of it simply for the ratings. Yes, I agree its TV and it must be done to capture viewers but really now - is that an excuse. Then they have the nerve to show idol gives back- what a crock. Deceit/humiliation then compassion.
Compassion? For what?
