NEW YORK -- Michael Winship, president of WGA East, paced in front of the strike line throughout the morning, his ear glued to a cellphone for most of the time.

Winship said he remains hopeful that the strike will get resolved soon and dismissed talk by the studios and networks that they can survive for a long time without the writers, calling such claims "rhetoric, gorilla dust."

"The fact of the matter is we are having a severe impact, starting last night with the late night shows, and we will continue to have an impact," he said. "We stopped production on 'The Office' and 'Cane' yesterday. We're having an impact, no question about it.

"I think one of the things the studios and networks may not be aware of is that we are much better organized than we were 20 years ago. We're much stronger."
