The Divas Wear Prada

I swear to God, everyone lands in Milan and heads straight for Prada, or Pradas, because there are exactly three Prada stores within walking distance of the city center. And if you don't hoof it to all of them by closing time on Sunday, you can kiss those Spring/Summer 2007 silver gladiator platform sandals goodbye. Because somebody else will have gotten the size 40 and you'll never recover.

Turban_2   Perhaps that's why I found myself contemplating one of those turbans Miuccia showed on the runway last season. You know, the satin ones that slide on and off as easy as a baseball cap? In Milan, in the store, in the heat of the fashion season, they just look so right, you know? Maybe then I'd get my photo taken in the front row like all the masthead queens.

I thought about it, fondled it, looked at the 350 euro price tag. It was less than the silver platform gladiator sandals. And I wouldn't have to blow dry my hair for at least a couple mornings, right? Just slide that turban on and I would be good to go.

I would need the hot pink one of course, pink being my color. And it might be worth it alone to see everyone's reactions to my wearing the runway piece of the last Milan season. Besides, when I'm 70 and it comes time to really wear a turban, as in, I'm losing my hair, I would already have one. And it would be vintage!

Monday morning came and went and I was still thinking about the turban after the Giorgio Armani show (who, incidentally, did turbans a full two seasons before Miuccia). Course they never caught on. Poor Giorgio. I wandered back into the Prada store at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and finally, when no one was looking, got the nerve to try the thing on. And you know what? It was fabulous. I felt like Norma Desmond on holiday in Milano.

Again, I thought about it, then I thought about London -- the Moncler raincoat, the Dior Mary Janes, Harrods, Harvey Nicks. And then I spotted them -- the Prada platform gladiator sandals in black suede. And they had my size!

So alas, I'm without a turban. At least for one more day.
