Henry Fuhrmann appointed AME to oversee copy desks, standards

March 16, 2009 |  4:05 pm

Below is the note from Editor Russ Stanton announcing the appointment.

Colleagues:

Henry Fuhrmann is being promoted to assistant managing editor in charge of copy desks, standards and the library, effective immediately.

Henry, The Times' first senior copy chief for the Web, is an extraordinarily versatile editor with first-rate management skills and the highest editing standards. He has earned well-deserved praise for helping shape our strategy for posting stories and photos to the Web quickly and efficiently while maintaining the accuracy and fairness that are the hallmarks of The Times' report. He worked quickly to help improve headline writing on the Web, thereby significantly improving search for users; our increasing web traffic is in part due to what he and the entire copy editing team have accomplished.

He also is a master at skillfully navigating many departments. If you've had the pleasure of working with him, you know that his professionalism and enthusiasm are contagious. In addition to running his two departments, his duties include leading the ongoing work of the Standards and Practices Committee, a group I appointed last year to oversee the setting of guidelines in this fast-changing media environment.

Henry joined The Times in 1990 and has worked as senior copy chief in business, deputy business editor, assistant business editor, slot, copy editor and news editor. He previously worked at Newsday, where he was a member of the first class of Metpro copy editors. Hank studied engineering at Caltech and UCLA before pursuing his calling in news. He holds two degrees in journalism: a bachelor's from Cal State L.A. and a master's from Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism. He has served the Asian American Journalists Assn. for many years as a local officer and board member.

He will report to me.
