Highway 1

July 9, 2008 | 11:23 am

Says the editor's note on the front of the section, "This is the last issue of Highway 1. Beginning July 18, Dan Neil's column will be in the Friday Business section, along with other auto coverage."

Business Editor Sallie Hofmeister and others are sorting out which of the other features will stay and how often they'll appear. Meanwhile, readers can find past coverage from Highway 1 -- stories and videos -- at the Autos link on latimes.com.

I know times are hard for the newspaper business. But aside from news, the Opinion section is the most important to me. It has been shrinking over the past few years. First it lost its own weekly section, then it shared space with Book Reviews on Sunday. And all the time it has been getting smaller and smaller, and less interesting. Now the Sunday Opinion is shoved to the back section of the main news, and it most likely will shrink to two or three essays. And, you used to have a good Book Review section on Sunday. It's been getting more and more boring, and now it's gone? What kind of a major daily paper are you? I've had my disagreements with The LA Times in the past, but now you are becoming a cipher.

I am very disapointed in the L A Times and miss Highway 1. The Times is becoming a shadow of its former self, to me.
Oil and Energy cost is a topic that is reflected in so many articles and features in your paper. The impact of this is important to every reader.
Perhaps the focus of Highway 1 could be adjusted to give auto buffs such as myself a little hope, and the mid-week car feature we have come to enjoy.
