Nancy Pelosi talking about a new economic stimulus package

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi upped the ante today in her running battle with the White House.

President Bush has been cool, to say the least, to further spending to boost the economy on top of the $700-billion bailout/rescue/whatever package he signed last week.

But there's the San Francisco Democrat talking in Denver about the possibility of a $150-billion booster shot for the economy, and calling the House back into session after the election to pass it.

That would be nearly three times the size of a package kicked around earlier--and approved by the House last month without gaining any support down Pennsylvania Avenue at the White House--and about the size of the late spring stimulus.

Sounds like election or not, the squabbling between the White House and the Capitol will continue right up to the moment the president sets foot on the Capitol steps to witness the swearing in of his successor.

Are you kidding me? If you look at history, it was the government's continual meddling in the 1930s that made the depression last so long. The economy needs to hit rock bottom. The more the govt interferes, the longer and more painful the ride will be.

I resent any plan that pays someone to sit around. I would love to see a public works project that is well conceived and that creates jobs for a year or so with the aim of employing people gainfully in directly working on fixing our crumbling national infrastructure (roads, bridges, water supply, electric grid...you name it if it needs work in the public realm).

I would be tempted to add a National Service requirement for ALL young people -- say 6 months to 1 year -- where you can join the military, the Peace Corp, or work on Public Works.

One of the problems today is the sense that Americans have that money is free. Politicians suffer this as much as many young people -- why else would they send us checks for $600-$1200 ???? It is stupid.

How about doing something to make those that have invested over $13 Trillion US dollars overseas to reinvest here, in America, instead of where the tax breaks are. Once that money came back home it would outshine any stimulus package now on the table.

pelosi's proposal is about equal in size as the one last spring-
it seems about the minimum size to be felt - it's enough that a couple who are struggling with their mortgage , but now getting some help on that, and take a stimulus check, tie up some loose ends and go out to dinner-spend some of it-it's called consumer spending-so that the guy at the restaurant gets a bit of stimulus to his biz
normally democrats have been tax and spend-however here i can't put it downas a spend cuz the gov't is giving money back to us-so i can't argue
but other gov't spending must be reigned in so we'll see
