House Republicans still protesting; some mad at Bush

01:11 PM PT, Aug 8 2008

Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) welcomes Human Rights Torch Relay to Washington, DC April 9, 2008

In case you were wondering, yes, those Republican rebels are still on the House floor, still pontificating in the dark, rallying the troops without benefit of a congressional session or a C-SPAN camera.

Their cause is President Bush's proposal to lift the ban on offshore oil drilling. Their foe, usually, is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is refusing to call Congress back from its five-week recess to handle energy issues.

But every so often the Guns of August turn their fire on their own chief. Usually the rhetoric turns against Bush for not calling Congress into session himself. (The White House view: a pointless maneuver, as Pelosi would just gavel them back on vacation again.)

But every so often the debate gets a bit more, well, personal. Especially when the speaker is Thaddeus McCotter, a three-termer from Michigan who has hosted the Dennis Miller radio show. And especially when the subject is Bush's attendance at the Beijing Olympics.

Today for instance, McCotter began his day at the Chinese Embassy in D.C., joining Tibetan monks, Falun Gong activists and Reporters Without Borders in reminding Olympics fans of Beijing's human rights record. In comments released by his office, he did not mention Bush directly but said:

There are many American politicians who presently believe the best way we can show our support for the people of China and the people of the world is to attend the Olympics. I fundamentally disagree with this proposition. The best way we can show our support for the people of China and for the oppressed people of the world is to today reaffirm our commitment that every human being is endowed by their creator with the right to liberty.

Then this afternoon, he returned to the House floor, where the congressman got more explicit. "I have expressed my disgust with the president for attending the Communist Chinese Olympics and for not calling the Congress back into session," he said.

Bush spoke about China and freedom of religion in South Korea before he arrived in Beijing. Then he went to the games. Being a pragmatist, he doesn't see any contradiction. He shouldn't have gone at all since he gives the regime a sanction from the leader of the free world. China has come a long way since Mao but it doesn't yet deserve the endorsement of the free world.
Munich 1936 was just about sports and brother love, right Mr. Goebbels?

Hickville USA

Dennis Miller is such a piece of unfunny trash. On today's show he and his moronic sidekick, Sal, were laughing and chortling over their idea of the Baghdad Disneyland and what kind of sick torture devices for the "terrorists" they would populate the themepark with. News flash Dennis, not all muslims are freaking terrorists! And guess what?! There is already a sick torture themepark in Iraq - it's called Abu Ghraib. If anyone is doing the terrorizing when it comes to Iraq it is the US military!!

Do the math:

These people have such a demented view of the world that they call for hate crimes and killing islamo-fascists every day on their show. Do these morons even realize that there were no more terrorists in Iraq than in any other country until the Neocons went blazing in with their illegal and unjustified invasion for oil and geopolitical dominance?

I feel most sorry for his listeners because not only do they have to pretentiously pretend to understand the obscure references he makes to films from the 1940s but they've also been decieved into this warped violent, stone-age morality and kindergarten simplified view towards the muslim world and US politics that is entirely un-American and un-Christian.
