Party of Five
Our apologies for an anemic Monday morning here on the old blog. We were caught up reading the 456,495,934 profiles of San Francisco's own Nancy Pelosi. Turns out the presumed soon-to-be first female speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives raised five — count 'em, five! — kids: Nancy Corinne, political activist Christine, Jacqueline, sales manager Paul and multimedia journalist Alexandra.
Everyone seems to find this the most interesting detail, and not just the New York Times. A Political Muscle investigation (also known as a down and dirty Nexis search) found references to her breeding skills in 133 articles in the last week.
Pelosi's procreative successes have traveled across the world. In the Philippine Daily Inquirer, columnist Ramon J. Farolan introduces Pelosi as "a mother of five," while in the Australian newspaper the Canberra Times (slogan: "All the News That's Fit to Print, Mate") we learn that reader Mariano Porceddu admires this "mother of five and grandmother of six" for her ancestry as well: "As an Italo-American now living in Canberra I can't hide my satisfaction at hearing that the first woman in American history to be the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives is Nancy Pelosi, also an Italo-American." The Financial Times of London judiciously waits five paragraphs, first outing her chocoholism, before getting to genetic material.
For the record, outgoing Speaker Dennis Hastert has two grown children — Ethan and D.C. lobbyist Joshua. Hastert's official biography notes that "whenever he can find free time, Hastert enjoys attending wrestling meets, going fishing, restoring vintage automobiles, carving and painting duck decoys." (Could Hastert have mistakenly painted Harry Whittington to look like a mallard?) Regardless, looks like the outgoing speaker will have more time to enjoy his hobbies now.
