Question: Which one do you like best?

1. The lovely DIY kitchen of Liese Gardner and Dave Lidstone in Los Angeles. They found the tile they wanted at a high-end shop, ordered it custom-made and installed it themselves.

2. Bravo to Renata Kanclerz and Lisa Coleman, who put this woven metal backsplash in their Hollywood Hills home. See the story.

3. This is another DIY job done by Aaron Raymond in the Windsor Hills area of Los Angeles. The stepped layout created a more difficult job. This is part of a Pardon Our Dust feature that will be in the paper soon.

4. Another view of Dave and Liese's kitchen. Can you tell I love it? The pounded copper sink came from EBay.

5. This is an original tile backsplash in a vintage home in Santa Barbara. What's significant about this story is that the couple originally wanted to tear everything out of the kitchen and redo it. But after living in the house for a while as the remodel got delayed, they started to appreciate the beauty of the original home, and decided to restore it.

6. Here is a tumbled stone kitchen in Steve and Marygrace Carpenter's Westchester home. Marygrace found a beautiful photo in a magazine of the look she wanted and carried that photo with her on her shopping forays. She ended up getting what she liked. Read the story.

7. This kitchen is in a mobile home in Santa Barbara. The owners decided to personalize the backsplash behind the stove with southwestern images.

8. Obviously this is an upscale kitchen in Mar Vista, but it was still created with maximum input from owner Janet Mitsui-Brown. Notice something different about the tumbled stone backsplash? It goes up to the soffit because there are no upper cabinets, which is an unusual design decision. Read the story.

9. This distinctive green kitchen in Long Beach, and its green tile backsplash, is the creation of Kathleen Schaaf, who owns a vintage clothing store. Read the story.

10. This equally distinctive backsplash was done by Kevin Schaaf, Kathleen's brother, who is a flight attendant. He set pieces of broken stone into brown grout to mimic the look of mountains. He thought if it didn't work out, hey, he would redo it. Read the story.

11. This is a super budget job with blue tile in a Corona home. The white stripe gives it some interest.

12. And finally, Heidi Toll's cool glass backsplash in her midcentury Sherman Oaks home.
