Snowboarder Louie Vito lands Toyota sponsorship for Winter Dew Tour

Vito

Toyota has announced its official sponsorship of snowboarder Louie Vito for the 2011 Winter Dew Tour. Vito joins U.S. Women’s Olympic team snowboarder Elena Hight and top freeskier Simon Dumont on Toyota’s roster of sponsored Winter Dew athletes this season.

Vito, 22, won in the first event of this season's Winter Dew Tour, the Nike 6.0 Open, at Breckenridge, Colo., in December. While Vito also represented the U.S. in the halfpipe competition at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he finished fifth, he may be most recognized by some for participating on Season 9 of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" in 2009.

Hight, Dumont, and Vito will be signing autographs in the Toyota tent in Festival Village at the remaining two stops of the tour --  Killington, Vt., taking place Thursday through Sunday, and the Toyota Championships,  Feb. 10-13 in Ogden, Utah.

In its fourth season as a founding partner of the Winter Dew Tour, Toyota also announced it will be offering athletes and fans free rides from shuttle stops in and around the Winter Dew Tour host resorts to any desired location, within a set distance, helping to keep fans from trekking in the snow.

Mammoth Mountain gets artsy in a whole new way

A snowboarder at Art Park terrain park, which recently opened at Mammoth Mountain.

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area recently debuted its new Art Park, a first-of-its-kind terrain park that seems as much fun to look at as it is to ride. (Though it had a soft opening in mid- to late-December, the weather kept Art Park from operating consistently until this month.)

Featuring a series of artist-designed jumps, boxes, rails and sculptures, this interactive effort will have rotating exhibits each season. This year highlights artist, pro snowboarder and Mammoth local Jeff Anderson, who died in 2003 at age 23.

Gracing the terrain park are some of the images from the exhibit "I am Snowboarding," which toured the U.S. in 2010 and featured 44 world-renowned photographers and artists paying tribute to Anderson.

Art Park is located on Mammoth's Round Robin run near Canyon Lodge and Chair 16 and is accessible with purchase of a lift ticket.

Rescuers pull 80 people from stalled lift at Ohio ski resort

Lift

About 80 people had to be rescued from a ski lift at a northeast Ohio resort after the apparatus stalled Saturday afternoon. No injuries were immediately reported.

Rescue personnel were called to Alpine Valley ski area in Munson Township, east of Cleveland, Geauga County Sheriff's Lt. John Hiscox told Associated Press.

Winds in northeast Ohio and the Cleveland area were gusting up to 25 mph or more Saturday afternoon, though that's "fairly common" for the region, said Brian Mitchell, a meteorological technician for the National Weather Service.

A similar rescue effort took place Dec. 28 when a ski lift at Sugarloaf Mountain ski resort in Maine derailed, injuring eight.

Mt. Waterman ski resort in Angeles National Forest now open

Skiers head up the mountain at Mt. Waterman resort in this 2008 photo. Mt. Waterman is enthusiastically announcing on its website the Friday opening to skiing and snowboarding.

According to the site, the Angeles National Forest resort has a solid 2- to 4-foot base of packed powder, with Chairs 1 and 2 open and the possibility of Chair 3 being added.

The venerable resort, which has no ski or snowboard rentals, is open Fridays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in winter.

The main route to Mt. Waterman via Angeles Crest Highway isn't open, still closed because of the recent rains as well as necessary repairs from the 2009 Station Fire. Instead, the resort is directing everyone to take Angeles Forest Highway from Tujunga.

Times Daily Travel and Deal blogger Mary Forgione has more details on her post: Southern California ski resorts: Mt. Waterman in Angeles National Forest to open Friday

Missing Alpine Meadows snowboarder found dead

The search for a 25-year-old snowboarder missing since Tuesday afternoon near Alpine Meadows Ski Resort in the Lake Tahoe area came to an end Thursday when her body was discovered in a tree well.

The Sacramento Bee reported that rescue helicopter crews spotted the body of Shawnte Marie Willis of Tahoma, Calif., Thursday morning on a part of the mountain that previously had been off-limits to rescue crews because of inclement weather.

"The news is tragic," Placer County sheriff's Lt. Jeff Ausnow said in a news conference, adding that authorities believe Willis might have hit a tree while snowboarding.

Ausnow described the U.S. Forest Service land where Willis was found as "treacherous" and said 80- to 100-mph winds had been blowing there. "The weather would not allow us to get there," he said.

Search and rescue efforts were hampered by high winds and low visibility that prevented the use of air- and ground-search vehicles, and ground search crews were called off Wednesday because of the threat of avalanches. Blowing snow had also covered any tracks.
