Billabong XXL global big-wave contest producing wild rides and must-see footage

February 18, 2011 |  4:19 pm

The 2011 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards entry window closes on March 19 and monster rides are still coming in for what is shaping up to be some tough competition.

The 11th-annual contest, sometimes referred to as the Oscars of big-wave surfing, will honor surfers who have taken on the greatest waves of the last year at any break worldwide, based on the photographic and video evidence.

Recent swells that hit Europe, including Ireland’s Mullaghmore Head and the famed break of Belharra, France, have contributed new entries, including Benjamin Sanchis’ recent huge wave at Belharra. Sanchis now joins hundreds more entries sent in from locales including Chile, Fiji, Western Australia, Tasmania, Mexico, Oregon, California and Hawaii.

The invitation-only XXL Awards ceremony will take place April 29 at the Grove Theater in Anaheim, and will feature more than $130,000 in prize money to be distributed to the champions in categories that include the Monster Paddle, Monster Tube, XXL Biggest Wave, Billabong Girls Best Performance, Surfline Best Men’s Performance and the ever-popular Verizon Wipeout of the Year.
