Mammoth Mountain opens Thursday

New_snow

Those with the Veterans Day holiday off might want to consider heading to Mammoth Mountain ski area, which on Thursday will be celebrating opening day of their 2010-11 skiing and snowboarding season.

A storm that moved through the area Sunday dropped 14 to 24 inches of snow on Mammoth, covering the mountain with an excellent base of up to 31 inches for Thursday's opener, and mountain conditions report 2 inches of new snowfall during the last 24 hours. Temperatures in the 20s have also allowed the snow-making equipment to be operating full throttle.

Mammoth is planning to operate the following lifts on opening day (subject to change based on conditions): Panorama Upper and Lower Gondolas, Broadway Express, Face Lift Express, Thunder Bound Express and Discovery Chair.

Thursday is expected to be sunny with a high near 36, and winds from the northeast between 10 and 15 mph.

Value lift ticket rates, which include opening day through Nov. 24, are $72 for adults (age 19 to 64); $54 for youths (13 to 18); $36 for children (7 to 12) and seniors (65 to 79); and free for those 6 years old and younger and those 80 and older.
