The Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay has been called on Thursday morning with clean 4- to 6-foot waves steaming down the point in South Africa.

Event No. 4 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, the Jeffreys Bay is looking at an excellent forecast to kick off the waiting period, and the world’s best surfers will take to the water this morning for Round 1 of competition.

"We’ve awoken to pristine conditions at Jeffreys this morning with consistent 4- to 6-foot waves on offer, and we’ll be commencing competition," said ASP International head judge Richie Porta. "We plan on a full day of competition and good luck to all the boys today."

With the top seeds gunning for the ASP World Title and the low seeds battling for survival among the world’s elite, Thursday’s picturesque conditions are poised to deliver unprecedented levels of performance and intensity.

Perennial favorite Kelly Slater, 38, of Florida, is coming into the tournament first in the rankings, campaigning for his 10th ASP World Title. He will be surfing in Heat 8 today.

Australia's Joel Parkinson, 29, defending event winner and currently ranked No. 8, has withdrawn from the event due to a severe foot injury he recently sustained, as has No. 18-ranked compatriot Kai Otton.

Competitors also face added pressure this year since the introduction of a new format that will reduce the roster from 45 to 32 surfers after the fifth event of the season, the Billabong Pro Teahupoo in August.
