ASP Women’s World Tour champ Stephanie Gilmore rebounds in Round 3 of Movistar Peru Classic

Stephanie Gilmore dominated Round 3 of the ASP Women's World Tour Movistar Peru Classic.

Top-ranked ASP Women's World Tour surfer Stephanie Gilmore regained her form for Round 3 of the Movistar Peru Classic, posting a 16.50 out of a possible 20 to beat wildcard Julia de la Rosa of Peru on 2- to 3-foot waves in San Bartolo, Peru, and advance to the quarterfinals.

The score was the highest total of the event, the fifth of nine on the 2010 schedule, and showed a sensational rebound for the 22-year-old Australian, who struggled a bit in early rounds.

"I just tried to shake Round 1 off and focus on today," the reigning three-time tour champion said. "Julia went over and tried to surf the right, but I felt that the left was the better option and that allowed me to catch a lot of waves and lock in some good scores. I definitely felt better about my surfing today than I did yesterday."

With two previous World Tour event victories in Peru, Gilmore is the heavy favorite heading into the quarterfinals.

"I’ve been very nervous the last two heats and I don’t know why," Gilmore said. "I think drawing the wildcards early in the event can be really nerve-wracking because you never know what they’ll produce. That said, it only gets harder from here on out, but I’m feeling much more confident today."

Gilmore is also a strong contender for the 2010 World Tour crown. Her three victories in four events this season gives her a 700-point lead over No. 2-ranked compatriot Sally Fitzgibbons, who will be facing Hawaii's Coco Ho in the quarterfinals.
