San Francisco Bay sailing tours aboard historic scow schooner open to public

Alma The San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park is again offering three-hour sailing tours of the San Francisco Bay on the historic 60-foot scow schooner Alma.

The hands-on educational experience will offer participants a chance to help the National Park Service rangers onboard hoisting sails and handling lines while learning about the history of the Bay and the San Francisco area.

Program dates are as follows:

May 1, 8, 15, 22;

June 5, 11, 19;

July 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 15, 16, 22, 24, 29, 30, 31;

Aug. 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 20, 26, 27;

Sept. 4, 11, 18, 25;

Oct. 2, 16, 23, 30 and

Nov. 6, 13, 20

Tours depart at 1 p.m. from Hyde Street Pier, at Hyde and Jefferson streets, where the Maritime National Historical Park is located. Boarding is at 12:30 p.m.

The cost is $40 for adults ($35 for May dates only), $30 for those 62 and older and $20 for children age 6 to 15. Children 5 and younger are free with a paid adult.

Advance reservations and more information are available by calling (415) 447-5000. Same-day tickets may also be purchased at the Hyde Street Pier ticket booth, which opens at 9:30 a.m. daily.

Rangers suggest that attendees wear closed-toe shoes and bring their own water, snacks, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses as well as layered clothing, as conditions could range from sunny and bright to rough and windy.
