Kelly Slater will try for tenth ASP World Tour title

February 24, 2010 |  3:00 pm

Kelly Slater, 38, nine-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 6, will return to Snapper Rocks for the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast as he hunts down an unprecedented 10th ASP World title.

The 2010 ASP World Tour kicks off this week with the Quiksilver Pro, scheduled to begin Saturday on Australia's Gold Coast.

Nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater will be back, seeking an unprecedented 10th title. With one victory last year -- at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil -- and five other top-10 finishes, Slater comes into this season ranked sixth.

"I never found myself in the right mind frame to deal with the pressure of a 10th title and find the excitement and purpose for what I was doing for more than a few heats last year," said Slater, 38, who will be competing in his 16th year on the ASP World Tour.

Slater will have his work cut out for him, with Australian's Mick Fanning returning to defend his title as well as No. 2-ranked Joel Parkinson vying for the crown. The local Australia crowd favorites each won three events on the 2009 tour.

Slater will face 22nd-ranked Benn Dunn of Australia and rookie Marco Polo of Brazil in the opening round.

The ASP Women's World Tour is also scheduled to begin Saturday with the Roxy Pro, at the same location.
