Winter Solstice Art Show Sunday at Satwiwa Culture Center

Gourd People by Nadiya Littlewarrior The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area will host their annual winter solstice art show and sale this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Satwiwa Culture Center.

The 10th annual event will feature regional artists displaying many traditional and contemporary Indian artwork, some available for purchase.

Returning this year will be longtime Satwiwa Culture Center guest artist Nadiya Littlewarrior, who will be sharing her collection of gourd art.

“People ask me if I make the gourds. I tell them that the Creator makes the gourds and I get to dress them up," Nadiya said of her artistry.

First-time participant Valena Broussard Dismukes will be showcasing her artwork as well as her book "The Red-Black Connection," which features photos and narratives of contemporary urban African/Native Americans and their dual identity.

The Satwiwa Culture Center main parking lot is at the intersection of Lynn Road and Via Goleta on the south side. Follow the entrance road to the end for a parking lot, restroom facilities, and a one-fourth-mile trail to Satwiwa.
