Free screening of Ken Burns' national parks documentary this weekend

Teton

The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area staff will be hosting a screening of the new Ken Burns documentary, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea."

The sneak peek will be shown continuously from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 26 and 27 at the National Park Service Visitor Center and the Satwiwa Culture Center, both in Thousand Oaks. Refreshments will be available.

Visitors can take advantage of 20% off in the park service bookstore and also peruse film-related merchandise.

The six-episode, 12-hour series, filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature's most spectacular locales, will debut on PBS Sunday.

On The Big Picture blog, colleague Patrick Goldstein shares an interesting perspective of the documentary from Time magazine's James Poniewozik.
