Sea Shepherd's Paul Watson bides time in calm before anti-whaling storm

Watson

The L.A. Times Dish Rag blog today breaks news that many already know about: Capt. Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society runs a vegan ship. DR also provides Sea Shepherd recipes for those interested in learning how these anti-whaling operatives dine.

Another bit of Sea Shepherd news: The controversial skipper and his ragtag crew will be at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium on Aug. 29 for an art auction fundraiser entitled "Sea No Evil." It will begin at 7 p.m. and feature more than 60 works of art, including original pieces from Shepard Fairey and Jeff Soto.

A $5 donation is required and proceeds will benefit Sea Shepherd, which is in off-season preparations for yet another campaign -- and perhaps another Animal Planet "Whale Wars" series -- against Japanese whale hunters in the Antarctic.

To be sure, that's what people want to know about. All this blase news about fluffy vegan pancakes and art shows does is whet the appetite for the meat-and-potatoes activity that includes dramatic confrontation and what the Japanese refer to as outright terrorism.

Watson will have more and faster boats for what he promises to be an escalated campaign. Those who followed last season's campaign may recall the collisions and other close calls. Surely, Japan and its Institute of Cetacean Research (Japan suggests to the world its minke and fin whale hunts are in the name of research) are plotting countermeasures for when both groups take to the whale grounds in about four months, during the Antarctic summer.

Many of the few hundred people who have commented on Outposts about this issue -- Watson has lots of supporters, but as many critics -- claim it's only a matter of time before someone is killed or seriously injured during these confrontations. Will this be that kind of season? Stay tuned....

I FULLY SUPPORT PAUL WATSONS ACTIONS IN TRYING TO STOP WHALING IN THE SOUTHERN OCEAN WHALE SANCTUARY I ONLY WISH I COULD BE WITH THE SEA SHEAPRD CREW...........RON DUNCAN

If we did not have men that stood up and died for what thay belive in NOT A DAM ONE OF YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO VOICE YOUR THOUGHTS,WELL YOU COULD IF YOU WANTED TO GET A BEATING AND SPEND THE NEXT 25 YEARS IN JAIL FOR IT how many of you bitching and moaners can speak Germen or how about working in the mines for the Japs
Thank god we still have a few men and women out there that will stand up for what they belive If not your grankids would have to look in a book to see aa whale,, Hay how about droping a few flowers in the water that will keep the whais alive

It's only a matter of time. Paul Watson has lived on the ragged edge for a long time and has pissed off a whole lot of people. Right or wrong some one is bound to punch his ticket. The idiot must have a death wish.

I think a lot of these comments against the Sea Shephard are just Japanese moles trying to make you think that popular opinion is against you. GO STEVE IRWIN!!!!

first off, to those of you who are confused as to why they need to kill whales to research them, they dont.

second, whoever said the thing about a WWII u-boat, i WISH.

thirdly, they wont be alone this year, that super fast, ecofreindly earth race boat is going this year!!!!

4th, notice about half the anti sea shepherd people misuse words, tere probally japs, just like happen on animal planet's site.

Firstly, Americans are not racists – are you 12? The Japanese are dishonestly violating a worldwide ban on whaling. Norway does not whale in a protected whale sanctuary and they do not lie about why they hunt and neither does Iceland. The Japanese kill a more whales than do Iceland, Norway and the US combined. The Japanese do not want to buy whale meat from Norway because they are concerned about the effects of pollution in the blubber of the North Atlantic Minke whale. Yeah, they’re whaling for research…

That being written, should the Sea Shepherds decide to battle any of the above countries, they will have my support and admiration.

If you think these giant, rare creatures are somehow less than human, then you may think Sea Shepherd are dangerous.
If you are adamant that giant whales must be protected at all costs, then Watson and SSCS are the only ones being pro active.
I wish Watson had torpedoes.
That research claim is bogus to everyone. They just don't like being told what to do.

Why Americans always ignore the other whaling countries :Norway or Iceland completely?
They are extremely racist

Hmmm al this fighting over the sea shepherd makes me hungry, whale-steak anyone??? hmmmmmmmmm

Here we go people:

All in the name of [fake] research! Do they think we are that stupid?

Save Whales; Eat Tofu! ;)

I personally think the Japanese Whalers are first a sorry excuse for the Japanese Mafia to make a ton of money each year using the bs story of "RESEARCH". By the way; in one of the WV episodes, you can clearly see a mountain of Offal [whale inner] dumped overboard into the water. If this was really for whale research, don't you think all of you anti-SSC morons that the Japanese scientists would want to examine the whales intestines and organs? No; all they do is slice the poor animal and pack it in ice ready to be sold at the Tokyo Fish Market for a huge profit!

Check this great video about "Japanese Whale Research":

By the way; I heard and it is confirmed that there's another ocean activist group [not Green Peace] which will be alongside SSCS in next campaign in the Southern Ocean/Ross Sea and with more than one bad ass ship. Can you imagine when those Japanese whale murderers see an armada of activist ships coming towards them at full speed??? I want to be there to witness the fear on those bastards eyes.

Yeah!!! Let's go kick some Japanese Whaler Ass!!!

You know if I was part of the sscs team I would show you all a couple of tricks to use against whaling. I too think that it is wrong to say that you are killing them for "RESEARCH". When in fact you and everyone else knows that its for the money. You know if it is for "research" then I too have a couple of things I need to use for reseach upon your vessel......they are called torpedos!!

Eric:

The Sea Shepherds defend the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the Antarctic because the Japanese are hunting in a PROTECTED whale sanctuary. One would think you might have picked this up while watching the show? It’s so east to be an armchair critic; however, you might want to get your facts straight in addition to using your spell check or heaven forbid, and actual dictionary. A small group of Native Americans and more specifically, the Makah tribe of Neah Bay, Washington, were granted permission to slaughter whales. And who backed this backward “allowance?” Al Gore for one; however, the Makah's aboriginal
subsistence need to hunt whales has never been recognized by the
IWC, as required by federal law under the US Whaling Convention Act.

Put that on your inadequately researched Team Whalers “facebook” group. I really think you teens need to focus your little minds on something that challenges you – maybe the best acne reduction cream is more on par with your intellectual level.

TO 9 in Tokyo - No one is imposing “values” on Japan. You need to actually look at the worldwide BAN (Hello!) on whaling before making a statement about being able to “take whales.” This is not a cultural issue and raising the issue about the war is not relevant.

I kept an open mind and went to the site you posted and while you chose to pick a self-serving sentence, you neglected the bigger picture, which is “The Australian Government remains resolute in its opposition to commercial and so-called 'scientific' whaling and is deeply disappointed at the recent departure of the Japanese whaling fleet for the Southern Ocean.

Since coming to Government we have strongly conveyed Australia's opposition to the Japanese whaling program through intense diplomatic engagement, including through the work of our Special Envoy on Whale Conservation.”

You cannot kill whales in a protected whale sanctuary and you are dripping with hypocrisy, as is the country of Japan and its government, for whaling under a loophole allowing for research. You want to eat whale meat? Fine, but frackin’ be honest about it.

Don't impose your values on us.

I cannot understand why people cannot take whales.

For keeping them?. We should control them, but need not to stop. If you say people never control the nature. I feel unfair. Do you know hamburger connection? Could you stop eating beef for tropical rainforest? And where country's people most eliminate carbon dioxide?

For the international law? Then we can licitly take whales?

For their rights? Your army has killed many innocent Iraq people? And you eat beef? It's unfair. If Islam and Hindu want to save beef or big, could you save them?

I never cannot understand why SSCS's violence is supported even if their porpuse is right. You know, ''all'' government of IWC (include your govt. and Australian government) don't support their action.

P.S. I think that the recent movie is a correct method, because of freedom of opinion.

I would like to know who are the members of the International Whaling Commision and perhaps we should start a Hall of Shame for them. Identify those responsible for these laws of appeasment and make the accountable to the general public. In days gone by the stocks were very affective at publicly humiliating someone when they had done wrong . Put the members of the IWC in the stocks and " lets have at 'em" as the old pirates used to say.

Nobody believes that Japanese whaling is about 'research' , it is simply a business which returns good profits. The best way to stop this would be a boycot of any and all Japanese goods in order that these comercial losses outweigh the illegal profits from whaling. Dont buy Japanese cars and how quickly do you think the Japanese government would act and stop whaling. If we all did our little bit and let it be known that Japan was alienating hundreds of millions of potential customers it would deliver a huge blow to the Japan whaling industry. Hit them in the pocket and hit them hard.

Watson and his crew are a joke. I watch Whale Wars whenever it's one, but only because it's like a 21st century Three Stooges. There methods are ineffective and comical. It's also quite hypocritical for them to sail their boat halfway around the world to stop whaling, when there are Native Americans who still whale hunt.

I figured after last season and the ramming of the vessel caught on tape, Watson would be dining on vegan prison meals. Alas, it appears like perhaps it will be this season now, as it's quite evident that he's as big of an attention whore as you can find, and will continue to increase the dangerous, unplanned manuevors (sp?) until he is sent to jail.

Feel free to join my Whale Wars - Team Whalers facebook group.

if anyone has seen the show captain watson is an amazing man who will stop at nothing to save whales. And how stupid do the Japaneese think we are i mean on the Nisshin there is a huge RESEARCH on the side dont you think we see right through that

i think that sea shepherd rock keep up the good work!!!!

I fully support Paul Watson and the SSCS. When large amounts of money are involved, people will do whatever they can to protect their bottom line. Complete disregard for life is normal with these large money making outfits. You can rest assured that the Japanese will be adopting more violent methods of defense and we will probably see these methods this coming season.

I am currently trying to settle my own financial responsibilities so that I can apply to help the SSCS on their campaign however I can.

Are violent and dangerous means justified if your cause is "noble"? I dislike the whalers but I also dislike Watson and the Sea Shepherds. Both violate the law. Still, I do not believe that gives me the right to take to the sea to ram both's ships or foul both's props. The Southern Ocean is one of the most dangerous seas in the world where the ability to maneuver your ship can mean the difference between life and death. Disabling a ship puts it at the mercy of sudden violent storms, large waves, and the ice. If you watch "Whale Wars" it is very obvious that the Sea Shepherds are the aggressor in every single encounter.

Love the show. I think they are all insane. I find it interesting they harm themselves for the sake of the whales. I couldnt do it. But not sure they should either. There has got to be a way to do this without breaking laws or sending someone home in a box. Are the whales truly more important then human life?
