Jeremy Lusk dies from injuries suffered in freestyle motocross crash

***Updated with statement from Brian Deegan
Freestyle motocross star Jeremy Lusk, 24, has died as a result of head injuries sustained in a weekend crash during a competition in Costa Rica, and it's with a heavy heart that Outposts shares this news.
The Temecula rider passed away in his hospital bed late Monday night in San Jose, Costa Rica, while surrounded by his mother and father, Chuck and Gina Lusk; his wife Lauren, and mother- and father-in-law Lynne and Larry, along with fellow Metal Mulisha riders Brian Deegan, Ryan Hagy, Cameron Steele and Erik Apple.
Deegan, founder of Metal Mulisha, issued this statement Tuesday at 3 p.m.:
"Jeremy motivated me to be a better person, he was my best friend. The bond of this team is one that will never be broken. We know Jeremy is looking down from a great place, continuing to move mountains and touch the lives of those above.
"One day, we will all be reunited and will ride together again. In the end, all dust turns to ash. Metal Mulisha will continue to live and die by that creed. Jeremy, we can't wait to see you."
Please keep Lusk and his family in your thoughts and prayers. He did his best to live life to its fullest and entertain, and for that his many fans are deeply appreciative.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Revival Christian Fellowship Church at 29220 Scott Road in Menifee, Calif. To learn more about Lusk please click here for a story posted in the L.A. Times obits section.--Pete Thomas

Well in Crusty 3 we were at that same place and that event sucked!! Jeremy was over shooting the landings everytime for the measely hour of practice time the promoter barley gave em! I know some of Jeremy's last words to H-Bomb team manage B.C. Vaught was "I hate Cost Rica, and I'm never coming back to this place.!

The video of his crash makes me get a sick feeling in my stomach. My husband, who is an FMX rider, and I have a heavy heart hearing the news of Jeremy's death. FMX lost a pioneer. The Mulish will never be the same with out the PITBULL. God Speed and our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and all the FMX riders. We lost a hero.

To Jeremy's immediate family, friends, and fellow riders. My prayers include that you will find some comfort during this time. It's hard to find the right words to say, that match what is in one's heart. Jeremy's talent and style of entertainment was itself a blessing to the sport, he will certainly be missed.

The way he carried himself on his bike is the way we should carry ourselves in life. Make the most of everything, stay positive and have fun with everything we do. R.I.P. Jeremy Lusk I'll never forget your outlook on this world.

Its at times likes these that you think of people like Jeremy and Dwain Westin (who died hitting a bridge while wearing a wingsuite) who continue to push that line between life and death. I know some people feel that they are not living unless they are in danger of dying... but come on people. Trying to do a backflip on a couple hundred pound dirtbike after practically throwing your legs up over your head at 50 mph and 50 feet in the air.... this is tragic, but maybe something good can come of it - no one else needs to die so needlessly.

As Jeremy's new tatoo read across his chest "In GOD'S Hands" and in God's hands he has returned. There is one to blame..period, no one knows that more then Jeremy. Remember him in your hearts, and live, laugh and love the rest of your days here on earth as Jeremy did. He did not waste a day not doing what he loved! Those who know him best, know this to be true. Larger then life here on earth and now in heaven with his father, Our Lord.

Sharing the passion for motocross, while having the opportunity to meet and ride with Jeremy in Temecula’s outback, with a common friend, the news hit me deep and hard. Jeremy, your spirit, talent and devotion to the sport will never be forgotten… My prayers go out you, your family and friends.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of a young person who was obviously loved and admired by many, BUT when people write that they are shocked by this, I have to snicker. The risk-many may say stupidity-involved in attempting such stunts comes with the ultimate price. As with auto racing, extreme skiing, etc, we spectators watch for the awe-inspiring nature of the endevor, but somewhere in the back of our minds, we are drawn to the possibility of seeing just what happened to Mr Lusk. I am saddened by his loss, but more saddened by a world in which people need to push the envelope because we cant rejoice and satify our urges for adrenalin through the simple things. RIP Jeremy
