A heart-felt "too bad" for Patrick Gudauskas, a San Clemente surfer who for the second time in his career was this close to qualifying for the ASP World Tour.

Gudauskas, who was ranked No. 16 on the qualifying circuit going into the season-ending O'Neill World Cup at Sunset Beach on Oahu, was eliminated in the fifth round and will not qualify for the 2009 World Tour.

The ASP's Al Hunt confirmed moments ago that Gudauskas has fallen to No. 17 and could fall to No. 19 after the contest ends later today. The World Tour accepts only the top 15 from the World Qualifying Series tour.

This is essentially a repeat of 2006, when Gudauskas fell just three spots shy of qualifying.
