C.J. Hobgood wins World Cup of Surfing; airborne Joel Parkinson enjoys the view
Australia's Joel Parkinson did not advance beyond the semifinals in the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing on Oahu's North Shore, but he did receive cheers after his airborne wipeout on the 10- to 12-foot wave in the accompanying photo.
Parkinson posted one of today's highest wave scores, a 9.93 out of a possible 10, during the quarterfinals, but lost in a semifinal heat that included Australia's Tom Whittaker and South Africa's Jordy Smith.
Florida's C.J. Hobgood, a World Tour competitor, went on to win the World Cup, which is the second jewel in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Next up is the Billabong Pipeline Masters, which could begin as early as Monday.
