Free hikes and events in the local mountains this weekend and beyond

It's fall, a terrific time to explore the outdoors. If you still need a reason to get off the couch, check out these free events and hikes in the local mountains sponsored by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy:

8 a.m. Saturday, Morning Bird Hike

11 a.m. Saturday, Quake Safe Walk

7:30 p.m. Nov. 18, Chautauqua Series

7 p.m. Nov. 21, Trail to the Stars
No, not Beverly Hills. This is a star-gazing op at Upper Las Virgenes Open Space that's billed as a moderate half-mile hike. Upper Las Virgenes Open Space Preserve, North of the 101 Freeway and west of Valley Circle, Calabasas. Call (310) 858-7272 ext. 115 or e-mail Lisa Ann Carrillo.
