Cabo San Lucas marlin anglers still rocking and reeling at Golden Gate

November 24, 2008 |  9:36 am

Anders Lundgren plays guitar hero with a striped marlin caught and released on a trip out of Cabo San Lucas.

Tracy Ehrenberg of Pisces Sportfishing sent the accompanying photo from her Cabo San Lucas office with the caption:

"No, that's not a rock star playing a guitar, it's Swedish angler Anders Lundgren, fishing aboard Rebecca on November 14th, about to release one of the 14 marlin they let go that day."

There is a slight resemblance to Cabo local Sammy Hagar, but that's beside the point, which is that marlin fishing remains "unabated," Ehrenberg stated in a weekly wrap-up issued Friday.

The Swedish group of Lundgren, Mattias Ekelund, Lars Papp, Mats Wildh, Mattias Ericsson and Daniel Turnstedt, over several days, caught 94 striped marlin (released), 19 yellowfin tuna, eight dorado and four wahoo.

There are signs, however, that the billfish may be starting to move off the Golden Gate Bank. Captain George Landrum of Fly Hooker Sportfishing today reports a strong showing of marlin at the Lighthouse much closer to Cabo.

"The bait keeps moving and the fish follow them so as the currents changed the striped marlin appeared in different areas, following the bait," Landrum said. "Live bait was the key to a decent catch, and using circle hooks with fluorocarbon leaders really made a difference."

Regardless, marlin fishing along the Pacific side of the Baja California peninsula ought to remain very good for at least the next few weeks.
