Albacore, yellowtail respond to summer-like weather

Summer-like weather combined with seas flattened by a mild Santa Ana wind condition have transformed offshore fishing grounds into paradise for Southern California anglers.
The Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach returned from Cortes Bank this morning with 48 yellowtail weighing 18 to 40 pounds.
The Freedom, out of 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro, was at Cortes this afternoon, and captain Tom Lee called 976-TUNA at 2 p.m. to report 41 yellowtail aboard and his passengers were still fishing.
The Toronado has another trip to Cortes scheduled to depart at 9 tonight. Mention 976-TUNA and save $50. For information, call (562) 983-9300.
Meanwhile, crews out of San Diego are still finding albacore and smaller yellowtail within one-day range. The Condor out of Fisherman's Landing today called in a count of 100 mixed fish, mostly yellowtail caught beneath floating kelp paddies.
