Shani Davis wins gold in men’s 1,000-meter speedskating event

Shani Davis of the U.S. won his first medal of the Vancouver Games, earning gold in men’s long-track speedskating at 1,000 meters Wednesday, finishing in a time of 1:08.94.

Mo Tae-Bum of South Korea won the silver in 1:09.12.

Chad Hedrick of the U.S. won the bronze in 1:09.32.

Davis finished 12th in the 5,000 — nearly 14 seconds behind winner Sven Kramer— and didn’t even bother finishing the 500 after placing 18th in the first of two heats.
