With less than a week left in the Vancouver Games, the head of the Canadian Olympic Committee admitted Monday it’s unrealistic to think Canada will catch the United States in the medal count.

The host nation had won nine medals heading into Monday’s action, putting it into a fourth-place tie with South Korea. Canadian Olympic Committee CEO Chris Rudge said Canadian officials were hoping to win more than just one medal on Sunday. The United States leads with 24 medals.

The admission is sort of a black eye for Canada, which spent $117 million over the last five years on its Own the Podium program, an effort geared toward helping the country lead in the medal standings.
