Good news for figure skating fans.

I have just learned that NBC has extended through 2014 its contract to televise U.S. Figure Skating’s two major events, the U.S. championships and Skate America.

The network originally picked up coverage of the events for three seasons when ABC did not continue its 12-year deal with U.S. Figure Skating after the 2007 season.

The extension will be like the current NBC deal, which does not involve a rights fee but is a revenue-sharing arrangement. The exposure has become nearly as crucial to U.S. Figure Skating as money at a time when interest in the sport has dropped dramatically.

NBC will continue to provide live prime-time and afternoon coverage of the U.S. championships as well as live afternoon coverage of Skate America.
