BEIJING -- Serena Williams won her debut in Olympic singles here Monday, finishing up a rained-out match against Olga Govortsova of Belarus by winning four quick games to complete a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The United States star led, 6-3, 2-1, when the rains stopped things Sunday afternoon. Williams, who won the gold medal in doubles at the Sydney Olympics with sister Venus and will play with Venus again in the event, had 15 winners and was never in trouble.
