On a clear day you can see Mutianyu

August 4, 2008 |  7:42 am

BEIJING -- You can't come to this city and not visit the Great Wall. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is 70 km (about 44 miles) northeast of Beijing. But it was tough to see past 200 yards, so the wall didn't look so great today.

The Great Wall vanishes into the haze.

Despite the gloomy haze and eye-watering heat, locals and tourists were having fun.

The most fun, however, came in the form of a toboggan. For 40 yuan (plus one yuan for insurance), visitors mounted a small sled and shot down 1,580 meters (nearly a mile) of stainless steel tubing from the Great Wall to the village below.

OK, so how much is 40 yuan?

it's somewhere between USD 5.00-6.00

$5.85

Is that just early morning mist? I'm just sick of journalists constantly posting up negative pictures of China and the Olympic arenas..i.e.smog...This is just uncalled for and just seems really one sided. Gosh, give them some credit that they are trying to clear up the situation. I have faith in you, LA Times to show us the more positive side of this great event.
